Opera Desktop Team

Another day, another snapshot

It's that time of the week (Friday obviously) and thus, time for another snapshot! :hat:

In this long string of first-time posters, I'm yet another. My name is Svein and I've been here at the big O for about two and a half years being a QA renaissance man and all-round go-getter. As you can tell from my avatar, I am also a goldfish. I swim around in my bowl on Olli's desk and eat flaky fish food. On weekends he brings me home and I get to look at the view from his kitchen window. These are great times!

But enough about me, OK? Today's snapshot has a veritable tractor trailer load of bugfixes, here are some specifics:

Highlights
  • Attention state red dots are now blue. The red dots got some flak the last time around, so after a bit of shilly-shallying and random trepidation we decided to switch out the racuous red for a balmy breeze-like blue. We hope you like it.
  • There's a brand spankin' new Unite service called Messenger, use it to chat with your buddies on My Opera.
  • Tab thumbnails on the side interface has been spiffed up a bit.
  • Unite stability has been given a once-over, we think you'll find it to be improved.

Known Issues
  • No auto-update this time around.
  • Java has issues on the Mac.
  • A few Unix builds may be missing, though most of them will be continuously uploaded.

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

these blue dots on tabs are even more beautifull than the red ones. :D

red --> blue (celeste)

Please don't change them! Now they are perfect :D

'< LIKE A HEAVEN! :D

Thank you Hicks? or whoever

ruario 7. August 2009, 14:16

No red dots, or are we just outta red dots? Luckily we had a tractor trailer out back full of blue dots to add to this release.

gandhi2 7. August 2009, 14:19

Congrats on the blog post sveins :hat:

arghwashier 7. August 2009, 14:36

the blue dots are better than the red dots but I still prefer the old way of highlighting, more easy to spot yet paradoxically less distracting

ps the transparency in qt4 build is still not 100% though it looks better now than before

Sutekh 7. August 2009, 14:38

These blue attention dots don't really grab my attention.
They need to be much more aggressive, especially now when bold text and different (blue) color of the attention tab were both removed.

Agree entirely. Red was fine for me.

With tab thumbnails on right, the resize toggle is *much* bigger than in the last build. You give the status bar so little padding... why do you make a resize handle so big?

imarooned 7. August 2009, 14:43

Why do you insist on keeping that UGLY line between address bar and tab bar ? A lot of people have already said it unnecessary and totally doesn't suit with general look.

You really should come back to the previous concept !

zoquete 7. August 2009, 14:52

imarooned, the "ugly line" is there very important and nice. Without it, the top of addressbar would look very fat / thick / huge.

Any fix with "error console" in it is strong in my book. Thanks guys and still loving and appreciating the lengthy changelogs. Have a good weekend.

My suggestion is to change the tab itself instead of adding additional artifacts to the tab. Change the background color of the tab or the border color. A 4-10px top border on a newly loaded tab would be very noticeable in my opinion. This should, of course, be configurable (colors at least if not the widths).

Don't like it, sorry. It's nice to be able to change the width of the tab bar by dragging it but having that extra bar on the side is just not worth it. Why not just have that dragging thing come out when you're customising the skin? That sounds much more sensible to me.*

Another thing, some custom buttons are no longer affected by the QT native skin making them stand out like sore, black thumbs. Is that an issue with the buttons or has something been changed about the skin itself?

Oh, and another thing, the start bar is still not affected by the native skin.

Other than that, nice build! Seems fast.

*that, or make the dragging line much, much thinner. Right now the thing is an eyesore to me.

zoquete 7. August 2009, 14:57

Dots should only be visible, thats all. They don't have to punch you in the eyes. Yes, you have to look at the pagebar. I hope it is not such a problem for you! Its one of the basic things you had to learn. You have to look at things if you want to see them. :irked:

DanielHendrycks 7. August 2009, 14:58

Yeah blue dots

I like the skin improvements a ton!

I polished my recommendation that I showed in the last build.

Here it is, it is pixel perfect.
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/107/58259896.png

For those those who do not know what this is I'll explain. You click on an arrow and the tab bar moves there. This is only shown when thumbnails are shown and only when a certain amount of tabs are open.

Anyone like it?

DanielHendrycks 7. August 2009, 14:59

Messenger is very cool  Awesome snaposhot :D We are nearing RC but there is still some things that won't work like voice.

DanielHendrycks 7. August 2009, 15:00

I'll show some skin bugs later today bye

zarkoh 7. August 2009, 15:00

Let's compare with skin from a few builds ago.

Do you still claim that it used to look fat/thick/huge (on the lef)and now it's slimmer/thinner/smaller (on the right)?

Agreed, get rid of the line. It looks Horid, wastes space, and serves no purpose.

On the subject of looks, whilst the new skin has grown on me, I really dislike the "mess" (the only word that can describe it) that's now present in the Top L/H side of the panel bar when you have the menus switched off... All sorts of shadings and gradients all going different ways, it looks horid.

NICE +10!! :D

Can you implement Opera Link to Feeds???

rriiicchh 7. August 2009, 15:19

The UI has evolved a lot over time and is looking a lot more polished

However I am still having stability issues due to Flip4mac plugin and crashes at startup using the startup dialog (which I can't use the built in crash logger for).

stranded 7. August 2009, 15:25

Thanks, testing.

Tuttle 7. August 2009, 15:25

Hi Desktop team,
Just a little bug when switsching between tab bar placement Top and Left :

When the mouse go up there in the left it seems to redraw and is ok (just a missing redraw I think).
Good work, opera 10 is on the way.

MetalRaise 7. August 2009, 15:30

Thanks for the build and lots of bug fixes. :sherlock:

+1
Changing the dot's color from red to blue clearly is an improvement since red is always a warning color and people might get the impression that an error occured while loading the page.
But I think no matter what color the dot gets, it always looks kinda misplaced, like a foreign object, breaking the natural flow of the pagebar.

I agree.

But thanks for reducing the width of the menu button, way better now.

Maybe just changing the color of the tab with a light color not so different from a normal tab, instead of using dot's.

poorrichard01 7. August 2009, 15:39

OH GOODIE, you fixed it so that the one way we'd found to get rid of the ugly Menu Button, i.e., getting rid of that entire space, doesn't work. How about you UNFIX it now? Haven't you figured out that the big complaint about that button is that WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO GET RID OF IT? WITHOUT TURNING THE MENU BAR ON? This is coming from someone who defends Opera so much I've almost developed the dreaded "fanboy" reputation, but for crying out loud....

DanielHendrycks 7. August 2009, 15:41

Ok, here are some skin bugs and recommendations.

Center these buttons.

When showing thumbnails the panel, new tab and closed tabs button have a thick black line under it.

I liked it when the active tab blended with the address bar.

I also liked it when you showed thumbnails and the new tab button attached with the thumbnail.

Also please fix bug DSK-260199

Yes, it attracts by shape and possition. the color is not that important.

Shape + position + sky-blue = enough attraction

fresco 7. August 2009, 15:50

Hm the "New Tab" button is kinda jumpy. There's always a little space between the last tab and the button.
http://img2.abload.de/img/aufzeichnenurhr.png

I tried to place the button manually next to the tab, but as soon as I close the customize dialogue it jumps to the right.

Yup, same for me. If I don't have tab bar filled with tabs, the button jumps from one spot to another.

fearphage 7. August 2009, 15:56

Regression - Upgrading restores the "menu bar is disabled" button/menu (DSK-260863). Also with this bug it is virtually impossible to remove the button/menu. The old method that used to work, failed several times for me. To remove it, I had to restore defaults on the pagebar (if that's the name of it) and then the menu/button would stay hidden.

yongshun 7. August 2009, 16:10

There is a line for the tab again....

Where is he new Opera logo?

No Windows 7 integration....

Doliprane 7. August 2009, 16:15

nice one

theadolescent 7. August 2009, 16:17

Impossible to see that blue dot. Red was better.

mulB 7. August 2009, 16:19

Following pages are still wrong displayed:

www.bild.de
Headline categories in the top-box.

www.focus.de
The "Videos|Fotos" section.

www.welt.de
"Aktuelle Videos" section (on the right).

All these pages have several ten-thousand visitors every day!

I have the latest Flash plug-in (10.0.32.18) installed. Win 7 RC 32

There are still to many pages wrongly displayed... :-(

Leighman 7. August 2009, 16:20

Not loving the no auto-updates! Hope this is a temporary phenomenon!
And I would really like a way to remove the menu button without re-enabling the menu...

koimark 7. August 2009, 16:21

I like changes - blue dot is better - it doesn't jump into your eyes but if you're expecting to see changes it's there. Good work.

mrd 7. August 2009, 16:21

The dot (red or blue) isn't enough imo. I'm not actually sure why a colour/saturation change for the tab background colour isn't the solution.

The dot seems to be a different solution for the sake of it but doesn't seem as effective.

That aside I just setup Win7 and popped this build on it as my Opera setup of choice. Guess we'll I'll find out how it goes for normal every day use!

mrd 7. August 2009, 16:24

Interesting quirk.

I have tab thumbnails enabled (tab bar at the top). I have 7 tabs open including this one.

I have the mouse cursor over a tab, I press F4 to change the panel to hidden/closed (either way doesn't matter) and move the cursor to another tab and the ADD NEW TAB button jumps to the right. When I press F4 again (again state doesn't matter) the ADD NEW tab button moves back to it's correct location until... (see above)

...

It also seems to happen when I drag the tab bar down past the point of it's maximum size (ie: it doesn't grow bigger BUT the add new tab button jumps to the right)

...

Final edit to add, that it seems to hop around a fair bit actually when mousing over various parts of the interface.

zikzakatak 7. August 2009, 16:32

hmmmm blue dots...red dots...

but mouse gestures and open with still an issue.

thanx for this one...

Ke11ett 7. August 2009, 16:38

Anyone else having problems with the spell checker not remembering words you have added to the dictionary if your not using the default language? Whenever opera is closed it loses all my custom words. Its been like that for the last few builds for me.

nevilledaniels 7. August 2009, 16:41

So where do I get the new version for windows?

http://snapshot.opera.com/windows/o100s_1679m.exe is last weeks version. :-(
