Opera 10.0 Release Candidate

Opera 10.0 has reached the release candidate stage.

What this means is that Opera 10.0 should be considered to be in a stable state code-wise, and that only selected fixes will be added if necessary. Apart from those (if any), the RC should be considered ready for release testing for Opera 10.0.

Perhaps the most obvious change in this RC is the new application icon, designed by Oleg Melnychuk. The red O will continue to represent Opera, but it has received a major facelift. It is also available in bigger sizes that before for Windows and Mac, so that you can view it in all its glory on your desktop.

The document icon has also been updated.

Note to Mac and Windows users

This RC will no longer use the beta preferences on Mac, but will upgrade your old 9.64 preferences. Windows has been switched over to the non-beta installation path as well.

Help us find the world's slowest connection

Before you start testing the RC, we would like you to meet Odd & Even, two brothers from a family with good strong packing traditions. They have been hired to pack Web pages for Opera, and now they're on a mission to fix the world's slowest connection. If you know a place with a slow internet connection, let them know in the forums!

Deb files have something strange going on.

installer says "Error: a later version is already installed"

The installation must be forced.

Edit. Oh, it was the version downgrade from 10.10 to 10.00. Nevermind.

vetler 25. August 2009, 11:12

Nice. This has support for the video-element, right?

nom4d3br 25. August 2009, 11:14

GJ!

Edit: The new icon is not so good. I prefer the latest.

I think it has already been mentioned that support for Video element will be present in a post version 10 release.

Congrats on reaching the RC stage. I'm waiting till the final version is released to start pimping Opera 10 to my friends. :D
The new logo looks decent, although i was hoping for something completely different than a 'O' .

Did you click on the side bar to download or did you use:

http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/rc-4570/

what build number were you before and what are you know?

I edited it already above. Anyway, I was using 10.10 4566 and the installer didn't like when I was trying to update to 10.00 4570.

tehdai 25. August 2009, 11:19

Thanks guys...

sapito 25. August 2009, 11:19

the msi installer is just a wrong version. after installation ist still build 1729.

rriiicchh 25. August 2009, 11:19

On OS X. I ran the auto update option and then all hell broke lose.

Opera was bouncing in the dock but at a rate approximately 2-3 times faster than normal and the autoupdater icon briefly appeared. I then clicked on Opera in the dock while it was still bouncing and a kernal panic occured.

After a restart Opera crashes on launch.

I'm going to try reinstalling it but there is a really quite serious bug in there somewhere.

Update: Crashes on launch even after totally updating and removing all the old preferences files. Works on a new User account though. I think the Kernal Panic that Opera caused has pretty much destroyed my main account on that computer as all applications seem to be having major problems now (good job I have it all backed up - but still not good).

Got the same here. Fixed by doing a clean installation.

Jurgi 25. August 2009, 11:29

Great!
Only few months ago I had 40kbit connection, that was pain! I widh I had Opera Turbo then. Luckily now I have 256kbit, which is still poor, but usable.

Yeah i keep getting a message that Opera link failed to synchronise, but i was thinking it was a problem with my network. now i'm not too sure.
Also, when i click on the Link Icon in the status bar, normally it used to show the configure or status options earlier. Now clicking on it doesn't do anything. Only the right click works.

The installer now defaults to /Opera instead of /Opera 10 Beta. Is it possible that you're looking at the wrong installed version?

Ok, gotcha this is because you went from the unite branch 10.10 to non unite 10.00. If you had upgraded a non unite build or if you waited for a unite snapshot in the future you wouldn't see this issue.

Edit: Just read your edit!

don't know if it's the Link service or this new build, but synchronization fails atm. experienced on WinXP.

Wade 25. August 2009, 11:52

for some reason my package manager informs me "Error: A later version is already installed" and i'd have to uninstall current version to be able to install this version and i don't want to do that because all the settings & customizations i have made . What is reason for this?

trying to install opera_10.00.4570.gcc4.qt3_i386.deb to ubuntu 9.04, build 4566 installed

davidviolin 25. August 2009, 11:56

nice new icon!!! congrats and finally at last!! I was hoping for something a bit more... polished/shiny/awesome looking perhaps but its definitely better than the previous one!!

Jarasmen 25. August 2009, 12:01

Love the new logo, looks great pinned on my Windows 7 taskbar :D

piroxicam 25. August 2009, 12:02

Does this RC build have Unite?
Should we 10.10 users install this RC or wait for a 10.10 new build?

The RC build doesn't have Unite. I think 10.10 is installed in the beta folder, so this RC would probably update your 9.64 version (unless you have installed 10.10 in the opera folder).

Immanis 25. August 2009, 12:07

Hmmm... the new icon looks good in the desktop, but not so in the taskbar and tray bar on windows XP. I'll comment on vista and windows 7 later.

Yes link is not working here (USB installation) and clicking the synchronization status icon is not bringing the context menu.

No unite in this build. If you want to keep unite wait for an update to 10.10 sometime in the future.

Vladimyr 25. August 2009, 12:09

I see a skin regression with this build which haven't been before.
If visual tabs are on the right, and all extra buttons like "closed tabs" are removed from the tab panel, then a strange gap is appeared on the top:

I very excited that RC is out, but I belief this should be fixed until release!

Juliata 25. August 2009, 12:09

qt4 build - thank you so so so much for menu button fix! Before this build, sometimes I had to press twice before the menu would appear; now everything is smooth! I love you, guys!

+1 a minor problem, and shouldn't be a concern for "normal" users (upgrading from 9.x to 10) but still should be fixed.

Originally posted by piroxicam:

No, waiting for a(nother) Unite build is up to you, but I am pretty sure Unite (10.10) will remain in Beta for probably a month or more after 10 is released, so you probably won't see any "RC" of them/it for awhile.

Edit: It keeps the same build as previous (ie B1729, etc) Because it doesn't overwrite Opera.dll (presumably because Existing > Installing versions).

So in many ways, it's not actually "downgrading" to Opera 10, might have to do a clean install, or install it seperately and then copy over preferences and such (or copy over files from new install to old install)

Your customizations are held in your profile directory (~/.opera) and won't be removed by an uninstall.
