Opera 10.0 Release Candidate

Opera 10.0 has reached the release candidate stage.

What this means is that Opera 10.0 should be considered to be in a stable state code-wise, and that only selected fixes will be added if necessary. Apart from those (if any), the RC should be considered ready for release testing for Opera 10.0.

Perhaps the most obvious change in this RC is the new application icon, designed by Oleg Melnychuk. The red O will continue to represent Opera, but it has received a major facelift. It is also available in bigger sizes that before for Windows and Mac, so that you can view it in all its glory on your desktop.

The document icon has also been updated.

Note to Mac and Windows users

This RC will no longer use the beta preferences on Mac, but will upgrade your old 9.64 preferences. Windows has been switched over to the non-beta installation path as well.

Help us find the world's slowest connection

Before you start testing the RC, we would like you to meet Odd & Even, two brothers from a family with good strong packing traditions. They have been hired to pack Web pages for Opera, and now they're on a mission to fix the world's slowest connection. If you know a place with a slow internet connection, let them know in the forums!

Look at DSK-262530 bug. Opera opens lots of new tabs in loop after clicking on "Online барања" link in the left menu of the page http://www.t-home.mk/mk/?z=266

Quick suggestion for Speed Dial: Include a cool default Opera background image, so users will immediately know it's possible.

Not sure why there's a checkbox for enabling choosing a Speed Dial background image? It's a wasted action, I think.

OSX build looks great!

Øzikzakatak Tuesday, August 25, 2009 6:26:49 PM

sherlock wonder why is not working form me (ping.eu)

Opera 10.00 RC (1733)
XP Pro SP3 / JS: 1.7

ping.eu, Autopix.de and nowloaded.org
works fine too.

W3C/Validome or java ?

sharomyga Tuesday, August 25, 2009 6:32:56 PM

does this build have opera unite?

Kamaleshkamalesh Tuesday, August 25, 2009 6:38:09 PM

Nickname titles don't seem to be updated by the RC build when installing over v9.x in App folder.

I'm noticing some nicknames I'd modified while using the Opera v10 betas have the correct URLs but the titles displaying in the address drop-down still have the old titles of the old nickname.

For example, I had an old nickname for "wp" for Wikipedia. I changed the "wp" nickname to Washington Post when using the v10 beta3. When the RC build sync'd bookmarks, "wp" points to the proper WaPo web site, but the title in the address bar still shows as "Wikipedia."

Can't tell if this is an RC issue or an Opera Link problem.

+1 to that, simple stuff like that makes a *HUGE* difference to new users.

No it isn't, because the other way, you would have to erase the path to the file to disable it, but you might want to keep the path there (disabling it momentarily, or perhaps editing the image, enable again when done) Although, I think if the file path is blank, "choose" should still be usable, which automatically selects the checkbox but thats more difficult (to code) than the way they did it.

i love the new icon sitting on my system tray and feeling proud of it. thnx buddy.
and what about Private Browsing. I m missing it.

rolarocka Tuesday, August 25, 2009 6:58:30 PM

Nice icon indeed. Now we need a new name for the browser. Opera always reminds me that there is a music style with the same name.

Will there be a fix for the issue with flickering of non-preloading-onmouseover-graphics?

Example: http://www.augsburger-allgemeine.de/Home/Lokales/Augsburg-Stadt/Lokalnews/regid,2_puid,2_pageid,4490.html

The map on the right under "LOKALTEIL WÄHLEN" is nearly unusable until all parts of it are loaded.

Ah, I'm not trying to nag but this MUST be fixed for Final!
Again, disable thumbnails in tabs and you will see a white line appearing under the active tab. Its not mean to be there.

This bug is reported as DSK-261402: http://opera.remcol.ath.cx/bugs/index.php?action=bug&id=927

This RC shares the bug introduced in build 1724 that makes the UI use wrong images for some elements when you switch a skin or apply a color scheme.

Opera is my only browser and I have been using every single announced build under XP SP3 and under Windows 7. And I have a feeling that nobody at the Opera Desktop Team is using Windows 7 (or Vista)! smile

1. Deprecated file dialog:
http://files.myopera.com/galu83/files/filedialog.png
I know that's definitely not a showstopper and that the OS integration with Win7 (jumplists!) may be out of scope for O10, but really, it's the ONLY app that STILL uses this XP-style, cheap looking dialog.
2. I praise the default (non-native) skin, but "native" skin is still shockingly unpolished and, in fact, obviously non-native under Win7 - especially that it looks good under XP (Luna & custom msstyles). Opera10 + natvie skin + "Aero" = Non-native pulldown menu rendering, non-native hovers, non-native , ugly icons etc. Vista-ish gradient doesn't make a native skin wink
3. "System color scheme" has nothing with system color scheme, shouldn't it be aware of Aero "windows color" settings (at least)? I hope that Opera 11 will focus on real UI integration for modern Windows OSes (and on Carakan) wink

Congrats on RC.

Grasli Tuesday, August 25, 2009 7:35:04 PM

The "Closed Tabs"-button is still off-center for me (the icon inside the button).

I dunno what its called but the "size-box" on the status-bar (100%) needs more space on the top. Its connected with the top-line of the status-bar. There should be just as much space as below it.

And again; get rid of the white line under the active tab when thumbnails in tabs are disabled. This bug is reported as DSK-261402: http://opera.remcol.ath.cx/bugs/index.php?action=bug&id=927

I like the new icon! It inspired me to go out and get some new high-resolution icons for my other programs on RocketDock instead of using the cartoon icons I had.

Thanks, Opera just keeps getting better!

Does this release include Unite, or will that be in a 10.10 Release Candidate?

hasmetrix Tuesday, August 25, 2009 8:00:37 PM

still has a lot of bugs to fix. Many of the bugs I reported hasn't been fixed and most are even not confirmed (I don't know why). There are great new features added but stability and compatibility issues are always on the background. I have to use the other browsers though I don't want to.

There are still problems with 8203 character on XP:

Please fix it asap.

Yes, but it's not just about Windows 7, it's also about Vista, in Vista the Open Dialog it's also XP style. sad

Nice build, the skin is getting better all the time.
Still, if you put the clock right of the closed tabs button, the last digit gets cut off. This is the case for several snapshots already.

Anything put on the right side gets cut off, the Closed Tabs itself is being cut off because of:
(skin.ini)
[Pagebar Tail Skin]
Padding Right = -10

When it should be somewhere between -3 and -5, and it causes all sorts of "problems" like the icon/image on the Closed tabs button being off-center.
[Pagebar Tail Skin]
Padding Right = -4 (from -10)

[Pagebar Tail Button Skin]
Padding Right = 12 (from 16)
Padding Left = 12
Margin Left = -4 (from 0)
Margin Right = -4 (from 0)

Is what makes that whole area look "normal" for me. (centered icons, normal spacing between buttons/items, etc)

Kyle Bakerkyleabaker Tuesday, August 25, 2009 8:43:41 PM

I'm really liking the new Opera icon, but it could still use a little work for the title bar image. It's a little too pixelated with my Ubuntu New Wave theme:

Title bar icon:http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/599/screenshot1dao.png -

Panel icon (the title bar should appear this smooth imho):
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/4082/screenshot2o.png -

System tray icon (aside from the reverted fix for the icon background from a previous build, the icon is still the old icon):
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/5246/screenshot3nst.png -

I have a feeling that the title bar pixelation will be noticeable for other common themes as well.

Having trouble at Youtube, I enter using my account, and click on the "View All" "Recommended for me" videos, wait a couple of seconds, and I try to click on any video or scroll the page. NOTHING happens, I can't click on any video nor scroll the page using the scroll wheel, I have to move the scroll bar manually and close the tab because videos are unclickable.

Congratulations on getting this far team. My Mac OS migration went pretty smoothly so I can't confirm any crashes but nearly all my e-mail signatures were missing. Pretty easy to restore them from previous e-mails. Most of my filters (which all contain regexes which are pretty much ineditable in Opera) made it.

One mail is still around: when pasting text into a mail window the first line is always left blank.

ouzowtfouzoWTF Tuesday, August 25, 2009 9:14:30 PM

But I dont understand why Wingogi icon is not used :/ Its the best Opera icon I saw in the internet. A bigger version of it would look very good I think.

This happens only when using Times New Roman as default font. Not with for example Arial. I saw other problems with Times New Roman as well, so one of the first things when I install Opera is to switch to Arial.

Can the line between the tabs and the address bar (the one used for expanding the tab bar) be hidden?

Janek83 Tuesday, August 25, 2009 9:22:18 PM

When MainMenuBar is hidden, the icon (first on the left, just before tabs) which shows PopupMenu with MainMenuBar items is hidden.
I have to show and then hide MainMenuBar to make this icon show up.

Bug?

Got a problem with mouse gestures which happens at least since the last snapshot (didnt use mouse gestures before).

I have a gesture with "Show speed dial" as action.
Open tab with for example page1.
Do my mouse gesture so page1 -> speed dial.
When I now click on a speed dial page (page2) then page1 is shown for a short time before page2 is loaded.

Can anyone confirm? (WinXP SP3)

When switching to native skin on Windows 7 Home Premium x86, Opera became unresponsive. Gray boxes formed where buttons were suppose to be, tried a couple more times and succeeded. Maybe its just a slow loading skin or something?? p

I wonder if the memory leak in for gnu/linux is fixed in this relase? I haven't tried this build, do to not have my own computer in the moment. The builds until now have eaten almost all memory and makes the computer to totally freeze, or very slow. the only solution is to kill opera. When using opera over time it first start to get slow, den in the end you have to kill it. If this is never gonna be fixed, I would have to recommend firefox, or opera 9.64 to others.

not tried this build, but the one before this one on a amd athlon 2500+ 512mb memory , and a intel duo with 1gb memory. on the last one, the computer totally freeze.

I can't confirm that. It's working fine for me, but I'm using Vista. Anyway, make sure that you don't start the gesture on a link, because that way it will have a different behavior.

With Visual Tabs on the side, I'm also seeing that hover on the text of a tab doesn't trigger the Tab Thumbnail. User has to move over the graphic area to see the thumbnail. I think it should trigger when the mouse hovers ANYWHERE over the tab object.

Point taken...I just ran into that use-case showing a friend of mine via screen-sharing, the Speed Dial background feature; and he wanted it blanked out. ha.
