Unite Apps are coming ever closer…
By Daniel Aleksandersen. Monday, 21. September 2009, 10:50:45
Another new snapshot for your testing pleasures! We have put a lot of work into finalizing Unite.
The biggest change comes from the Land of Marketing and Usability Testing. We are re-branding Unite Services as Unite Applications in the name of simplicity. (Apparently, no one knew what a service was.)
We still want all of you to focus on testing Unite, and ask that you leave the Sonar application running. Sonar is bundled in this snapshot, so there is no excuse for not turning it on. There are also UI changes to the default apps, so go have a look!
For Unite Application Developers (hey! you just got a new title), there are some new technical details for serving an Unite Application from your own servers. Use the new file extension .us .ua and serve it with the MIME type application/x-opera-uniteapplication. Users will get a security warning if the application is served from a non-trusted site (similar to add-ons in Competitorfox).
We are also experimenting with giving feedback on the most common crashes. This feedback page will be populated as a new tab in your session after recovering from a crash.
Known Issues
- F2 dialog in non-browser view opens tabs in background instead of foreground
- ‘Search the Web for’ from address drop-down doesn’t work
Highlights
-
Unite Servicesrenamed Unite Applications - Unite Applications facelift
- Sonar bundled for this snapshot (please enable!)
- Experimental crash feedback

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

But the update of the services/apps from the last build didn't work correctly. The standard services/apps just disappeared. I did a clean install then, which worked.
Btw: Is there an easy way to reset Unite to defaults? Or at least: Which files have to be deleted before an upgrade install of new builds to get a default Unite?

It does have a lot of folders and subfolders but still.

"Here is the stuff that I have running"
Someone didn't take pride with that line.
Recommend changing to:
"Here are the applications I have running"
There is also a link to 404:
"Find more apps"

I don't see it in the list of installed appps on the Unite panel, and if I click the Sonar Install button, it looks as if I opened a binary file in a text editor (lots of `^Tӑ)... (upgraded from 1778 on XP)

That's due to the fact, that the folks managing the unite.opera.com-www-server have not changed the "Content-Type:" associated with the Unite service/application files yet. They are still served as application/x-opera-uniteservice instead of application/x-opera-uniteapplication. (You can fix it yourself in the meantime eg using Proxomitron, but probably it isn't worth it – just wait till they change it on their servers.)
The migration from the term "service" to "application" also is the reason for the 404 on unite.opera.com/applications/. So no reason to be bothered. ;)))

In privacy settings I choose "public" and save it.
The thing is, it doesn't work. It's still not available to public and requires password :/
BTW, why did you changed layout ? In my opinion it was much nicer than new one.

It is not enabled by default. It is only included in the build for this snapshot. You will have to turn on Unite, and then enable the service manually. (Please do. We need more testing.)

Now this is most likely a problem with me not understanding linux (Ubuntu 9.04 64bit), because it works when I boot windows instead. Still, if someone could give me hints it would be great. Both for testing Sonar (has "no activity") and for running live apps later on.

My workaround for installing services is to download as zip, then rename as .UA (.zip.ua didn't install) and open it.

In my case this was caused by an old MIME entry for "us". You can fix it manually: Open your operaprefs.ini, under [File Types] there should be an entry "application/x-opera-uniteapplication=2,,,,us,ua,|", but no other for "us" (search for "unite" to check). Under [File Types Extension] there should be "application/x-opera-uniteapplication=,128".

When hovering over background tabs, there is about 4 or 5px error; hovering on area between two tabs makes its left tab active even when mouse cursor is on left edge of a right tab. Changing skin to 'Windows native' solves the problem, but....
Saving Chat Log produces empty file in default format. Why is there if it's not functioning?
Tools - Notes: Ctrl+F not working (even if focused in a text of a note), Edit - Find... is grayed out.
Speed Dial: Click 'Configure Speed Dial' and hover X button - notice that it is incompletely shown.
