More Unite builds

We are still working hard on Opera 10.10, and here is the result so far.

This build has mainly got Unite stability and bug fixes, but we also fixed an encoding issue when selecting an entry in the addressbar dropdown.

Since I focus mostly on crashes, I would like to thank all of you who use snapshot builds and report crashers to us. In order for us to reproduce these crashes more easily, please make your comments as detailed as possible when submitting.

Known Issues

  • No Solaris builds this time around

Note: Some Unix builds may be missing, but they may be uploaded later

Highlights

  • Addressbar dropdown fixes (fixed issue with %20 instead of spaces)
  • Change Unite attention icon on Windows.
  • IPv6 fixes for UNIX (Some sites would not load)

I have one bug in the last three builds. If our Bookmarks menu has more than 1 page, it is drawn above the other menus, Before this bug, it was drawn just under the words Bookmarks, Widgets, Tools...

Thanks seems stable. With so much time spent on Unite I would love to see what the numbers are far as the pay-off. Honestly I'm not sure its worth it as a feature, but I would love to be wrong. I would like to see Google mail added as a web email type available. You know small things... small things add up to the big user experience not necessarily one jaw dropping feature? Something about all your eggs in a basket?

I would argue users like a product because of all of the small features and general flow/feel of an application. Look at Firefox I could do everything in it I can in Opera, but I don't use it. There is no single feature in Opera that makes me prefer it... its a combination of things... food for thought, I guess.

    What is this fix about?

    Kamalesh Thakker 1. October 2009, 18:10

Thx for the focus on crashers, Helge. :ninja:

Any plans to isolate plug-in crashes like Safari/SnowLeop without restarts? Is that an OS integration or have you crazy guys thought of another clever way to manage that annoying behavior from buggy plug-ins (before we get to HTML5 video-tag heaven?

    Auto-update box position refinement:
I've noticed when setting=Opera prompt on exit, the auto-update dialog hides the exit-prompt dialog (since it's smaller). When user clicks on install-now after the update progress finishes, it doesn't switch the focus to the exit-prompt dialog box...so, unless you cancel the autoupdate-install box, you never see the exit-prompt box that's stopping Opera from exiting and updating itself. The user will keep clicking on "install now" and nothing happens. Freaky.

Because you don't have to use TPB, RapidShare, Flickr, etc and you can edit the shared files whenever you want without having to re-upload, or edit some on-line website. It's also much easier to control who gets to download/view what you share.

Although until Unite is more robust (if it ever gets there) I'll stick with my own FTP because it can handle more than 500 files at a time, and allows for more control over bandwidth, and security.

It just looks like DSK-267032 is also got fixed...

Change Unite attention icon on Windows.

What do you mean? Icon in Status bar is still the same for me.

Please make three icons: Link, Unite, Turbo behave the same. I mean:
    - why are Link and Unite "disabled" and Turbo is "off"?
    - why do Link and Unite get green when pressed on arrow, but not Turbo?
    - why are Link and Unite styled as buttons when placed on Address Bar, but not Turbo?

Also when hovering over background tabs, there is about 4 or 5px error; hovering on left edge of a tab makes its right tab active!

[Sytem: WinXP_sp3, default Opera settings and UI]

PS: I'm sure those are known bugs? If anyone knows for solution (skin.ini), please let me know. Here or in the forums (1, 2).

Just wish that i could send SMS from http://www.clickatell.com. Been unable to do this since the first beta of 10 was posted. Have to use Chrome for this function.

How do you post a screen shot into this reply window??

    paulgca 1. October 2009, 19:20

It looks like DSK-266476 didn't get fixed, but then again I didn't expect to be fixed since there is no Solaris build.

I am expecting to see some major fixes in the next build. I don't have a inside source but I do see a pattern!

Hmm ... I kind of get used with a half-dark-gray box in tray icon's background. It was ugly but bearable ...
Now it's HORRIBLE! I has a light-gray-almost-white background!!! It is like a turned on light in my tray!!!

    Linux build (obviously), QT4/64bits/KDE4.3.1

Thanks for the Unix fixes especially!

Btw, I was using build 6693 on OSX v10.5.8 and I upgraded to v10.6.1 last night, and it seemed to blow out a majority of my favicons somehow. I obviously can't try to reproduce, but I thought I'd mention to see if any other Mac builds had the same outcome after upgrading to SL.

When I auto-upgraded to build 6711, not seeing the favicons being fixed...

    EDIT: I didn't open Opera before updating from v10.6.0 -> v10.6.1, so maybe it's a 6.1 issue...not sure.

Link & Unite are sort of external to the main purpose of Opera which is a web browser, Turbo affects web browsing directly, sort of like say Hard Drive encryption would be enabled, or disabled, but DMA or (HD based) Memory Cache would be on or off.

This isn't an official explanation by any means, but that's the reasoning I presume is behind it.

    arnymars 1. October 2009, 19:59

Doesn't work "Delete Private Data" (in Win98): Opera Unite hangs due to memory leak in several latest snapshots. It works OK in Opera 10 Final.

Off-topic: From a browser policy standpoint, I think Opera should be less passive about Link and Turbo, maybe even with Unite. Turbo=Auto should be the default with a good descriptor if it kicks in while browsing about why the images are suddenly fuzzy.

Opera Link should be urged to every new Opera user, as well. It only takes 10 seconds to login/sync your Opera items (which creates a useful pseudo-backup, even if you only have one computer with Opera). Btw, PLEASE mention Link every time Opera (desktop, Mini/Mobile, device) is mentioned. Why is this being underemphasized??

Same with Unite, to possibly display a quick way to share data privately to new users. This is delicate, though, to avoid overwhelming new, non-tech users who may be intimidated.
