Opera Desktop Team

Key fixes and a focus on stability

, , , , ,

Time for another snapshot and also time for another team member to announce it!

Since I'm involved in UNIX/Linux testing it seems appropriate that I should be the one to announce a snapshot with some nice UNIX fixes. Firstly it seems we got around the Qt 4.5.3+ 100% CPU issue. Also a fix for freezes during DST-to-normal time switch. Finally, we noticed that a few of you were having problems getting Opera to pickup your default Qt style. If you are one of those users try running Opera with the new '-systemstyle' argument.

Of course it is not just Linux specific fixes. There are several Windows stability improvements, crash fixes, Unite fixes, tweaks to improve old features (e.g. check out the list of search engines in doubleclick menu.) ... But I won't list them all here, scroll down to the change log for the full details.

Oh, and before I go remember the Unite Apps competition!

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

I just reinstalled Bubbles again (bubbleshq.com) in order to use my web apps. Utility sites like time tracking and to-do lists are so much more useful when they act like little applications. However, Bubbles uses Internet Explorer, so it all just makes me miss Opera, and the labs build for widgets.

Good things come to those who wait. Looking forward to Opera 10.10 going final so that we can have more in-progress features in the dev builds

+1 for -systemstyle as default. Works fine.

cancel 6. November 2009, 19:04

How -systemstyle is supposed to work? I don't see any difference, opera is still uses it's default dark theme, not my system style.

cancel 6. November 2009, 19:11

Also. All other qt applications use KDE open-save dialog, and opera is using default qt.

I don't know, it's just working this way (in KDE4).

Uhm... yes? I already did a quick scan of the source, some of it's a bit "weird" but nothing major popped out that would (or should) prevent Opera from displaying the page to some degree, but it's just all white...

I don't use the site, so I'm not really interested in figuring it out, just somewhat confirming that it has issues.

It only works when JavaScript is disabled, if it's enabled, then it fails just after "Connecting" to "www.com"... and remains just a white window.

The enable Opera Link progress icon was originally to skinny, now it is to wide. http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/2186/93529891.png
I think this has been the case since the last build.

Don't use Linux too much these days, but decided to take Moblin for a test drive (very good it is too, except is tied in very tightly with Firefix). Had a problem with it when I installed Opera (using the QT4 RPM).

The first time I opened it up, it created the bookmark.adr file in the profile with read only user permissions, it then kept complaining that it could not write to the bookmark file.

I had to change the permissions afer it had created it to be r/w (I deleted my profile and repeated the excercise, and it did exactly the same again).

Not sure if this is a general Linux build quirk, or Moblin specific.

I really hope one Day Opera becomes available for Moblin, along with a Moblin theme/look/feel It's a great Linix Platform for netbooks (8second boot, and lighting repsonses in the UI).

I didn't but it made things very slow? Do you have the latest Flash since that site uses it?

Filip007 7. November 2009, 00:53

Don't know but looks like it randomly crashes...i'm using Opera 10.1 and Mandriva One 2010.

Compliments on your age i wish that i was so smart. :psmurf:

I am installing KDE Fedora 12 RC. I'll get back to you shortly if it crashes there as it may be a Linux thing.

Filip007 7. November 2009, 01:03

Nice on the speed there...just race away.

Anyway i'm using Gnome series of Mandriva One 2010, and yes in 10 days Fedora 12 comes out and i will go with that...don't like the KDE it usually crash one me after first 5min use.

DanielHendrycks 7. November 2009, 01:05

Well this will be my first experience with KDE. I want to see if I like it or not...

Filip007 7. November 2009, 01:15

PS: I fixed my posts i'm using Mandriva One 2010 not Fedora...:faint:

Sorry on that it's 2:14 AM where i come from...

kyleabaker 7. November 2009, 02:08

Why is Opera the only browser that renders the search div incorrectly at reference.com?
http://screencast.com/t/dNk753IC

The problem can be fixed by shrinking padding-bottom by 3px, but no other browser seems to render this 3 pixels too tall. Is it an Opera bug, or something in their style that I'm missing?

DanielHendrycks 7. November 2009, 02:30

@kyle
Bug in the site or not I'm contacting them in case it is them, they may know what is causing it.

Had the same problem here on Kubuntu Karmic, i thought it was just a quirck in my new installation but apparently not. Re-starting Opera solved the permissions problem but confused the hell out of Link, making it synch all the default bookmarks and getting rif of my own.
Thank the gods fo back-ups.

PS: can anyone tell me what good -systemstyle is doing? I honestly see no difference.

PPS: Why is it that, when working with Unite applications Opera uses the proper KDE4 file dialog, but uses the default QT one when working with files from any other part of Opera?

willianholtz 7. November 2009, 03:28

Hooo thanks, waiting new build ....

Inventrex 7. November 2009, 05:15

The "last-element-not-loading" bug turned up again.

Using Vista x86.

Also, the address bar lags greatly and either sometimes does not give the list of URLs or fails to update after tracking the first few characters typed in... or maybe because my history log is set at 50,000

In Linux Mint 7, there's no sound for youtube videos. I'm using the Wildmint theme and the text on the radio buttons are almost invisible. Everything else works though.

What version of flash do you have installed?

cofoppyplop 7. November 2009, 07:05

I must amend what I said having posted too soon. No sound is working at all in Opera, but sound works in Firefox, and in local applications. Could be something specific with my PC that broke it. Thank you kyleabaker for asking.

eshield 7. November 2009, 08:22

I'm happy to see that Opera's development is going fast. But, still, there is no x64 version of it =/ I hope Dev's will make x64 version of Opera.

Opera shows white text on white background in certain places. I'm not talking about broken webpages. It happens in Opera itself; opera:config, for example. It occurs even with "opera -pd /tmp/tmpprofile", so it's not due to my Opera configuration. I'd like to show an exmple, but I don't know how I can paste a screen shot here.

I guess this is because Opera picks up the text color (white) of my desktop environment and ignores its background color (dark gray). The menu bar of Opera, on the other hand, uses both text and background colors of my desktop, so it's readable. This problem has been with me since---I can't remember exactly, but at least since Opera 9.0 . My desktop environment is LXDE now, but the same problem occurred in KDE 3.5.

I already submitted a bug report two to three times. I'm using Debian GNU/Linux testing.

Neither does mine, I snagged that from DragonFly under the GET's
but the "Looking up www...." and "Completed request to www.com" shows up in the progress bar, and is the last thing to "complete" before all transferring (for that tab/site) just stops.

Always 30 elements completed of 31, sometimes 32 total, and anywhere from about 26 to 36KB transfered.

2 Errors, and 4 Warnings according to Error Console.

Content Blocker, Plug-Ins, "Identify As..." makes no difference, only JavaScript.

IE8, FF 3.5 & 3.6, Safari 4.0, Chrome 2.0 & 4.0... all work, and this is the only site this happens on, but like I said before it doesn't bother me as I don't use the site, still waiting for the original poster to say what their "problem" was.

Ahum, there are 64 bit Linux builds. Just no Windows 64 bit build. Guess you need to switch to Linux and leave Windows .

Sterkrig 7. November 2009, 12:48

There's no need in 64-bit Opera on Windows at any rate. What would you do with 32-bit only Flash plugin?

Check your user javascript folder or

Go to operapref.ini and search "error console filter" for a javascript entry.

The new mail icon works much better, but it still has a problem:

In Windows, if the mail window is focused inside of Opera, but Opera is minimized, the new mail icon will not display.

The new mail icon should display if the mail window is not focused or if Opera is not focused.

Thanks!

Very strange incident: I've been away from home for a couple of hours, and when I came back, the order of some bookmark on my personal bar has changed! They are all still there, but 4 out of 15 have changed their location.
Also, one bookmark (in a folder in personal bar) has got a totally different (and wrong!) favicon. I.e. a sourceforge CVS page now shows the Opera favicon p: Using b1857 on XP SP3.
