Skin fixes, Unite, and then some

, , ,

After staffing up and accelerating the development process, we are now approaching the beta stage on Windows. This build has a number of skin fixes and improvements, a large number of bugfixes, and Opera Unite should be working again.

We also have a new feature for you.

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: it contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

The return of Geolocation

Last year, we introduced Geolocation API support in a labs build on Opera Labs. Since then, much has changed. We're now using the Google Location Services as the backend and we no longer need to use a separate executable to scrape wifi data on Windows XP. We're happy to release the first desktop release with this feature as standard.

What is geolocation?

Location specific services on the web is not new. Many web sites offer localized services based on your IP address such as "Find a Friend in [your city]". IP address location is typically very inaccurate and cannot be used for more advanced location services.

With the W3C Geolocation API, this changes as the browser is able to provide much more accurate location data to a web site using the additional wifi data from the surrounding wifi endpoints. This will allow for services such as Flickr's World Map for finding geolocation tagged images close to your location (use "Find my location") or example services such as on HTML 5 demos site.

How do I turn it on?

The first time you go to a Web site that requests geolocation information, Google Location Services' terms and conditions are presented. If you agree to them, the service is activated,

After that, every time a Web site requests geolocation information, Opera tells you, and gives you a choice: to send your location data, or not to send it.

If you at first reject Google Location Services' terms and conditions, but later change your mind, open opera:config, search for "Enable Geolocation", check the checkbox, and save the settings.

How do I turn it off?

You can reject Google Location Services' terms and conditions. Alternatively, open opera:config, search for "Enable Geolocation", uncheck the checkbox, and save the settings.

How does geolocation work? How well does it work?

It depends on the device, and its way of connecting to the Internet.

If the device is a desktop computer, without any wireless connections, the Internet address (IP address) is used to determine the device's location, and the measurement is rather crude.

To determine the location of a laptop or other wireless device, Opera may in addition send the following data from nearby Wi-Fi access points:

  • MAC address (uniquely identifies the hardware)
  • signal strength (tells how far away it is)

A database of known Wi-Fi access points, together with measured signal strength, makes it possible to give rather precise location information.

The success of this method depends largely on the concentration of known access points.

How do I know that a Web page is using location data?

When you first go to a Web page that uses location data, Opera tells you, and you decide whether or not to send the data. Thereafter, a pin appears in the address field connected with that page. Clicking on the pin opens a site preferences dialog where you can change the geolocation setting to one of three values: "Yes", "No", and "Ask me".

How is my privacy protected?

Every time a Web site requests your location data, Opera tells you, and asks your permission to send it.

With your permission, Opera passes the location data to Google Location Services, and sends an estimated latitude and longitude to the Web site.

Opera does not save location data, nor are any cookies generated. Every time your location is requested, Opera redetermines the location data.

The data passed to Google includes location data, plus a random client identifier, assigned by Google, that expires every 2 weeks. The data passed to Google is governed by Google's own Privacy Policy.

The location information sent to the Web site is governed by the Web site's privacy policy. It is the responsibility of the Web site to dispose of this information in a way that is consistent with the W3C's Geolocation API Specification.

We are still working on streamlining the user interface for geolocation. Your privacy is important to us so we are trying to make sure that you will get a clear and understandable message when a web sites wants to request your location.

Selecting a text based URL and using the context menu for "Go to Web Address" does not load a new tab for the address.

Is this a known issue, and are others seeing this? It started happening in the previous build.

I like the new "O" button personally, and am glad the 'close tabs' button changed from being a weird 'hat' thing.
Also, I think the panel button being on the status bar by default is too small for regular use.

edit : It'd be really nice if the status text messages were on a background that fades in and fades out smoothly rather than flickering madly as you roll your cursor over the page.
Generally you would be moving your cursor fast enough for the text to not fade in in time - so it would not show at all until you actually 'hover' a link and *want* to see the status text. Plus the visual effect would be much easier on the eye.

I think the concept is confusing. Maybe that icon should only like the recycling symbol, but without the bin.

First impressions on LINUX:
1) PLEASE set Bitstream Vera font as default. Just like in previous opera releases!!!
2) PLEASE make default font color black, this light gray is very hard to see.
3) I love the new icon for closed tabs. It's a "Trash Can" as it was in the Opera 8 series. This is the classic and good icon, it never should have been changed.
4) Panel icon on status bar - great! More space for tabs bigsmile

Keep up the good work, can't wait for the first usable release on Linux, so I can install it for daily use.

A bug that seemed to have been corrected has returned: the CSS in a page won't update when you reload, UNLESS you view the page in another browser and refresh in that browser. Then, upon returning to Opera, F5 will refresh the styles. Strange, huh? I am about to report it.

Yes - I think the old 10.1 button was perfectly fine. It was quite dull, but at least it was consistent with the rest of the UI.
I think it should be quite dark so that you can't notice it - otherwise it looks quite odd, especially when the window isn't maximised.

edit: The close tab icon is actually quite nice when it's not 'lit up'/full. I think the "full" icon should remain dark, but just have the 'tab' sticking out of it only, without changing colour.

Closed tab icon is fine, I feel like it could be better. I am not sure about the refresh button change. The new link icon looks like a refresh icon. In the left corner of the active tab (if the 1st tab (from left to right)) there is not a line connecting the tab and the address bar. Pin tab is not good looking. I think it should be changed back to lock tab. Middle click scroll thingy sometimes does not work.

Yes, Mac build feels laggy with Quick Find.

I would suggest something specific...don't waste cycles and display anything for following use cases:

1) First-letter input (just show nicknames, but no need to trigger search for one character)

2) Why are searches being initiated for WWW or HTTP...?? If there's a nickname for "w" or "ww" or "h" or "ht", fine, but don't search for those useless URL fillers.

3) Same for inline-FIND. Don't search on first char, because no one is going to type "a" (or any letter/number) and expect a search result.

Not for ANY character? Even rare characters in non-Latin alphabets? Not even to find an instance of dieresis, or any given accent? Or to quickly find a dialog piece with an exclamation? Or to check if dashes were translated right in the page you just uploaded? I certainly can see myself searching for instances of just one character in a page. It won't be "a", though.

NEOAethyr Saturday, February 6, 2010 2:13:06 AM

I've been using this rev as my main browser since my previous post earlier today.

It's been working great.

2 more bugs:
Scrolling up or down(not sure which, at least down), causes some backgrounds to mess up pretty badly.
Noticed it on myspace once in a while.
Not a prob on v10.10.

Logging in a backdoor of sort into myspace doesn't work well in this rev nor the previous as well (don't know about other rev's).
Not a prob on v10.10.
What I'm doing is using myspace im to click on home, with cookies enables and my proxy disabled.
If the browser is allready open, no tabs...
Then it won't login.
If the browser is closed when I click on home in the myspace im, then it works.
I call it a backdoor of sorts because if someone tries to hack the account and fails multible times locking the account, you can still log in that way lol.
(Used to have prob in the past whenever I linked my myspace page to my sigs in hardware forums)

That 2nd bug I can't begin to explain the prob.
If I had to I could post some logs from my proxy...(diff between v10.10 and this rev), that's if you really want me to.
Plus I'm not sure what all rev's of the im it affects either, since I don't upgrade that anymore(don't want the phone stuff built in anymore).

It might be possible to reproduce if you tried with the latest im, I don't know.
Like I said I could produce logs.
But I can't really expect you guys to fix that prob, I guess I can just be hopefull for now.

The background render prob might have something to do with the status bar render prob I mentioned before.
I dont' know exactly what bar I'm really using as one off hand, and I'm afraid I'll crash my browser trying to find out...

Anyways sorry guys for the long post, but this build is rocking.
It's f@cking awesome.

There is one more thing...
I dn if this or normal or not, but for the heck of it I checked the peacekeeper bench.
And there's 3 bars for your score, I get 2 bars.
And the last few tests just sit there with some cartoon like chars doing absolutly nothing.
Probably some sort of prob there.

....
Is there a way to get opera to use built in dictionaries for spell checking?
Because mine never worked and I think I allready disabled it a year ago or 2.
...

TalynMoya Saturday, February 6, 2010 2:19:09 AM

I'm liking it so far!

My only gripe right now - is there a way to disable the alt key from popping the menu up? I am running on Linux and I use alt F1-F5 to navigate through my desktops and every time I hit alt the darn menu pops up. I haven't been able to find it in the keybindings in the preferences.

Sorry if this was brought up before, I didn't feel like looking through all 4 pages of posts.

This is a third snapshot I can't get to work.

This is what I get when I try to run it on my FreeBSD 7.2

./opera
X request error - BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter):
Major opcode: 20, Minor opcode: 0
Resource ID: 0

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

All the releases and snapshots prior to 10.5 worked.

My qt version is qt-3.3.8_6, I also have qt4-corelib-4.4.1
My xorg-server is 1.4.2,1

What can be wrong?

Thanks

Ben Ryvesbenryves Saturday, February 6, 2010 2:25:17 AM

Impressive work. However, when Opera Link enabled, the browser crashes very shortly after it has connected and synchronised for the first time.

In Opera 10.1 with hidden menus, pressing Alt brings up the menus in two columns, with the regular menu to the right. Is there any way of restoring this functionality (the second column is missing for me, which makes accessing the Tools menu quite tedious)? Am I missing something obvious?

Pavol BielyPaBi3 Saturday, February 6, 2010 2:37:50 AM

Mouse gesture "GestureDown" will open new tab without speed dial so the opened page is blank.

A workaround is to change shortcut GestureDown from "Open link in new page | New page" to "New page".

Well I guess my computer sucks or something. It is pretty old that might have something to do with it? Because I did it again and same thing. Opera gave me 1446 while Firefox gave 1435 overall score, while in complex graphic rendering Opera was choppy while Firefox wasn't. Firefox had a score of 2545 while Opera 1376. So for me Firefox is definitively rendering better. faint

nice build - nice 'Panels' icon & 'Closed Tabs' icons

- Status bar still not showing my custom Toolbar setup

- in 'JavaScript Options' (Prefs > Content), after selecting a UserJS folder via 'Choose' button (but before clicking 'OK'), the 'Choose' button no longer responds to a 2nd click - you must first close the window ('Cancel' or 'OK'), then reopen the 'JavaScript Options' window & start again

in 'Appearance' window:
- cannot delete buttons from 'My Buttons'
- when 'Appearance' window is open, removing a button from Start bar removes the entire Start bar, not the button - and then Start bar option in 'Appearance' window gets grayed out
- with Right-placed Tabs, Start bar hides the Menu icon and part of the tabs - after removing Menu icon, wasted space remains on top where it was

For what it is worth, I've tried the last 4 (at least) alpha builds on a Macbook Pro and it is unusable. No Unite. No Sync. No plugins. Pegging 100% CPU, constant beach balls etc. I thought this must be legacy installs however I wiped them out with AppZapper and did a fresh install. End result is the same. Beach balls, locking, massive CPU etc. Mac looks like it has a massive way to go

Cutting Spoonhellspork Saturday, February 6, 2010 6:07:48 AM

For the last guy, "which MacOS?" of course.

Peacekeeper now has 10.50 among its fastest browsers, it's a very single-process app and still stupidly fast. Side note, my 10.10 stable threw a "no java" error on Peacekeeper benchmark, though browser reports java 1.6 just fine. And YES Purdi I DO have java enabled.

So...with Unite up, I want to see combined throughput of either 4 or 8 Unite servers (on a quad-core) versus Apache on the same system.

Concerning Unite and that other fellow's upgrade questions, I think he was asking how safe it'd be to roll the new build over a 10.10 install. It seems the only practical way to get non-standard apps on a fresh install. (Install 10.10, configure Unite in 10.10, roll 10.50 and begin testing)

Hector Macias Ayalahectormacias Saturday, February 6, 2010 6:08:21 AM

Opera 10.5 pre BETA is already so different from 10.00 that it could easily be called Opera 11.5.

It already contains more changes than Chrome has implemented in 4 versions, and there is a "5th" going on. Only benefit of it is they will reach 10.00 so fast (altough no improvements), that Opera will finally forget about that 9.80 BS in the agent string.

Great changes in the UI. I like the icons for Closed tabs and the new link icon, as well as the other icons.
I have noticed one bug and am not sure if it's a known issue. When a download is completed, there is notification showing the download is complete. When i click on the notification and select open, the .exe file should normally be executed, but Opera is opening a Save dialog box now. I have noticed this since the last snapshot.
