Bringing <video> to the Mac (and a free movie!)

We now bring you the latest and greatest from the Mac Team! The team has fixed bugs, improved Cocoa integration, introduced an annoying beeping sound whenever you press keyboard shortcuts (known issue!), and last but certainly most exciting: brought <video> to the Mac!

To ensure that we actually get some testing of this, we have included a fun filled 10 minute movie. Enjoy! (It is not cats on skateboards but we are doing the best we can.)

MrFrodo Friday, February 19, 2010 4:09:31 PM

Movie was hysterical. Only thing I noticed was the scrubber did not move with the progress until I clicked on it. May not be opera's issue, but...

Dustin WilsonKhadgar Friday, February 19, 2010 4:12:48 PM

I think you all waited to release this AFTER I WENT TO WORK, but it's okay bigsmile. I guess there'll never be any PPC builds again, hmm? Unfortunate if that's so. I'll be stuck on a PPC machine at work for at least a good while longer as it's only a few years old, but I can understand why the architecture is being abandoned.

Not going to say any problems I've found here at the moment as I've yet to test them on the new build to see if they've been fixed. However, great job so far. The hidden click-to-flash feature is pure gold.

MrFrodo Friday, February 19, 2010 4:15:41 PM

Still have an issue with the intranet we use here. It's Flash based. Here is a screen of the login. Every character typed is duplicated.

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo289/tomliv/Screenshot2010-02-19at111037AM.png

Other issues as well, but the inability to even login is a biggie...

The company does not support Opera, unfortunately, but if this issue and others are fixable by Opera, all the better. Opera USED to work with this. It is just since v10.x does this occur.

OlliOlli91 Friday, February 19, 2010 4:15:47 PM

Seems to be a great build so far. Hope you get the keysound problem solved. Veery stable till now. Yeah and as MrFrodo said the scrubber doesn't work.

Pitiphong PhongpattranontDeathscytheSephiroth Friday, February 19, 2010 4:18:26 PM

Cmd+` to switch is great

but it still has and bug, if I am in thai keyboard and press Cmd+` Opera will zoom out to lowest level I think it think the key is Cmd+(-) (It is - in Thai keyboard at the ` key) and then switch window and then if I press again it won't but if I reset the zoom level again It will occur again

PS. I still waiting for holding right click and scroll to scroll through pages ^^

itsfresh Friday, February 19, 2010 4:20:13 PM

problem here? video not loading cry

Lukaslksd Friday, February 19, 2010 4:21:11 PM

Opera : browser on steroids!

I have clocked page loading time for Firefox 3.6 (tweaked heavily by me, it is much faster than default) and Opera 10.5-3257

The results for reuters.com are FFX 16 seconds till page is readable and 4 seconds for Opera p

MrFrodo Friday, February 19, 2010 4:24:10 PM

Not only am I getting your above-mentioned beep using kybrd shortcuts, but the toolbar buttons (next, previous, refresh...) stop working after I use a shortcut (command-r, in this case). Right-click > Reload works and does NOT stop the buttons from working.

João Davidpiroxicam Friday, February 19, 2010 4:30:13 PM

Zaferarzafen Friday, February 19, 2010 5:00:18 PM

1. Drop-down menus do not work.
2. Right click menu does not work.
3. When a flash movie is running (youtube movie for example), if I click the file menu(to view the options) on the up mac bar, the flash movie stops playing around 5 seconds after the menu shows up and resumes if I click somewhere else.
Can anyone confirm ?
OS: Mac OS 10.6.2

SteveKong Friday, February 19, 2010 5:28:39 PM

I dont't know whether this is already know: Since a couple of builds Opera Link does not update all speed dail entries during first sync. Places 4 and 5 remain unchanged, sometimes 1 - 3 too.

Jeff ™intelimac20inch Friday, February 19, 2010 6:01:48 PM

http://macnn.com bring up a security warning box in opera. It says You are about to go to an address containing a username.

Username: photos_macnn
Server: photos.macnn.com

Are you sure you want to go to this address?

It also does the same thing in opera 10.10. intelimac mac os 10.6.2

Windows users - you already have a post dedicated to the latest Windows snapshot - use it to report your issues (and file your bug reports with the bug wizard). Please keep this post for Mac-only issues, since this post is all about Mac.

Here are some of the issues I have noticed:
- ESC key doesn't work
- Volume knob for

Nice!

Christopher UngerUncleUngie Friday, February 19, 2010 6:27:18 PM

These Mac builds are getting obscenely good...if you guys get javascript performance up to snuff and smooth scrolling nice and silky (specifically with the magic mouse and trackpad), I'd dare call Opera the best browser on the Mac platform. Is the mac team up to the challenge?

PS - Great job, y'all.

edvakf Friday, February 19, 2010 6:30:10 PM

Can you guys please publish source code for GStreamer (for Mac Opera)

3: Confirmed. Also happens with the sample bunny video (including by only right-clicking on it), not only with flash then.

1 and 2: menus do work PRIOR to the video bug. After you freeze a video by opening a menu, right-click menus DO stop working, and you only get them back after closing all the windows. Therefore, confirmed.

Mac OS 10.6.2 here too.

The UI (especially tab bar) still takes up way too much space, mind shaving off a couple of pixels in height? Perhaps move the tabs up, like in chrome?

Every time I open a new tab, my mac plays a sound "ping!" from the system!!! I downloaded this release on the current post!

The video plays perfectly, but the playback controls are not working properly.

Any estimate when Automatic Proxy Configuration will return? I can't do without, I'm afraid.

Also, PGP for M2 has been promised for Opera 10. Will we see that anytime soon?

Yes, that is because they serve a few images with a username in the URL (format http://username:password@server.com/). The warning is intended to prevent you from unknowlingly visiting an address formatted like this:
http://www.google.com:reallyfineyoucantrustus@www.evilserver.com/

The warning doesn't make much sense for image URLs, but then the use of a username:password in an IMG url doesn't make much sense either smile

"Enable on demand plugins" seems to be broken in this build. I was LOVING the flash blocking capabilities!

OSX 10.6.2

Kamaleshkamalesh Saturday, February 20, 2010 12:10:32 AM

I'm seeing unresponsive sites with this build again, but it's tough to pin-point; links not clickable. Forced to close the tab or restart Opera.

Zoom slider still not changing value when zooming a site.

Confirmed...it seems to block some flash content, but not most.

works apparently fine here

Kamaleshkamalesh Saturday, February 20, 2010 12:55:21 AM

I'm getting a "cert page incomplete" warning on this page.

Lucero Jr.Luxer88 Saturday, February 20, 2010 12:57:27 AM

oh, video does play fine, but it shows a total duration of "119304" (sic) , which i believe to be related to the fact that the video "progress bar" (how is it called, btw? lol) is unusable.

Not sure if related, but ESC key not working at all now, when there's a few characters in the addr bar (v10.6.2)

Jeff WaldenWaldo Saturday, February 20, 2010 3:07:20 AM

Any reason the video's served with an application/octet-stream MIME type rather than video/ogg or something more specific?

syplex Saturday, February 20, 2010 3:55:56 AM

Some problems with popup windows

1. Titlebar text is being drawn over the close and maximize buttons making them really hard to see if the title is long (which seems to be most of the time)
2. Cannot double click titlebar to maximize a popup. This is really annoying.
3. I have maximize new windows set to true, but popups are not maximizing. It is nice that popups dont take up a tab, but I am used to browsing with popups becoming full size tabs and would like to return to that.

*edit to add:

No ESC from search is really annoying. You also can't ESC from "integrated search".

idiologic Saturday, February 20, 2010 5:15:57 AM

I'm using the latest build for Mac with OS X 10.6.2 and I've noticed that some of drop-downs are showing only 1 option, and some are showing all of them. And also I haven't been able to make widgets work in a really, really long time.

great to see another snapshot. Firing up the mac now

Didier CaizerguesOneCatFamily Saturday, February 20, 2010 9:22:34 AM

Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but this build (I know, I know, it's still in beta) is for Leopard and above only. Does it mean that Opera is taking after Mozilla and withdrawing support for older Mac platforms? My MacBook Pro still has Tiger in its bowels, and given the price of the upgrade to Snow Leopard and the current state of my finances, I don't think a change of scenery is in the cards yet. So, in a nutshell, is there gonna be a Tiger-compatible build of Opera 10.50 during beta stage, or for final release? If not, it'll be a real shame... Especially considering that 10.50 in its most recent build does work on Windows XP...
