10.51 snapshot for Windows

This Opera 10.51 build brings a few important fixes to the e-mail client. We have also been working on stability, and some tweaking of performance related to JavaScript timers, which should lead to smoother animations in some cases. Some bugs related to customization have been addressed as well, along with fixes to Opera Link and bookmarks handling.

It's difficult to summarize and highlight specific fixes, as most of them could be important to different groups of people. Just take a look at the changelog, and let us know if you spot any regressions.

Unix users can check out a better looking Opera in a separate snapshot and Mac users should look for further updates in a few days or so.

For questions about Secunia advisory 38820, please refer to the official statement in the security blog.

Known issue: Carakan crashes on some sites (such as yahoo.com).

Complex graphics: 11000 => 14000 bigeyes
Now Opera grabs amazing 5700 points in peacekeeper (5000 in previous).
But DOM and Data performance is drop...

Also, memory usage in http://v8.googlecode.com/svn/data/benchmarks/v5/run.html is not 1000MB at peak, only 290MB max up

Please continue to work on JavaScript...even though Opera now wins in the benchmarks, on a slow CPU script heavy sites such as Google Docs and the discussion board feature on the Angel LMS feel much more responsive in WebKit/Gecko.

For example, say I am trying to select a menu item in Google Docs...in Opera the browser will slowly highlight every menu item my mouse cursor passed over on the way to the one I'm actually pointing at. In Firefox and Safari it just directly hits the correct one.

I still cannot open Word or TXT attachments. PDF, RAR, ZIP works fine. But, DOC and TXT files cannot be opened. sad

Talking about speed, I get +700 points in peacekeeper benchmark! That's awesome! yikes

bhsand Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:00:08 PM

Thank you for not using "new snapshot" as title. wink

First impression - great snapshot. Only negative point is that flash content here (video) sometimes needs several reloads to show. Forcing redraw through pressing F4 twice doesn't help. Reported as DSK-287537.

(Btw, you need to add 10.51 to the version drop-down menu in the bug report wizard.)

Wow! Thats really better now. What caused the high load, which "configurations" were to blame?

Whatever: thanks for the new build :-)

Btw.... in the last version like yesterday i couldnt view youtube videos with the new layout, it keeps saying i have an outdated flashplayer... i downloaded the new one, still sayes (Go Upgrade!) :| what do i do? btw i have this snapshot now

ohxten Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:11:29 PM

Wow! Scrolling performance is amazing... it uses way less than even 10.10! Thanks so much for improving that, guys, I'm switching to 10.51 now.

I think the 10.50 skin looked way nicer on XP... this new one looks bad with all of the gray in XP classic mode; also, still hoping for speed improvements when scrolling on a page that I'm searching with CTRL+F, and a way to have the address bar dropdown use one column per entry, as it is in 10.10.

Very nice job though, guys.

Youtube.com -> F12 -> site preferences -> cookies -> delete all.

Thanks for %s, %t, %c, %u, %l ! My custom buttons are working again yes

PraetorianX Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:14:57 PM

Wow! Great! First impressions:

Background image problem is indeed fixed!
Also, I can now listen to streaming audio without crashes from: http://www.live24.gr/radio/sportfm.jsp?ref=sportfm

So DSK-286546 seems fixed.

Crashes for me, though.

janaco Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:15:56 PM

Regarding "Scrolling":

If opera:config#Extensions|FramesShowActive is checked then scrolling with wheel or scrollbars gives high load, even on this simple iframe-Testpage. And btw. Auto-scrolling with Mouse-Middle-Klick does not work in iframes (same Testpage)

experttease Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:19:37 PM

YAY! Scrolling works properly! (it's now psychologically acceptible to use a touch pad!)

Not best fix bigsmile The extra quotes are added (in the buttons).

Yndi Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:32:46 PM

Great:
transparent inactive tabs are back
no crashing so far here

Peacekeeper(updated from previous version, no clean install this time):
Rendering nearly doubled
Data and DOM Operations around 1000 Points less than in build 3298

But the problem with start bar and plugin content is still there.

techlawsam Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:33:00 PM

yes sweet will give it a run thanks opera team!

Incorrect information.
Test:
[Link Popup Menu]
Item, "Test"=Execute program, "c:\test\ShowCmdL.exe", "%l %u",,"Attachment Archives"

Result: blank string.

Joelspadija Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:47:07 PM

Nice! My system tray is no longer flooded with red O's.
There's still a few annoyances left though:
- dropping a bookmark onto a folder in the bookmarks panel places it under, not inside, the folder. I can't tell if this behavior is intended, but everywhere else in Windows, dropping something on a folder puts it in the folder.
- The tab cycler still looks weird when thumbnails are turned off.
- Using mouse gestures to flip to an adjacent tab, then quickly to another adjacent tab causes Opera to seem unresponsive. Actually, it is completely responsive, except to the first tab you switched to, not the tab it is currently drawing. (DSK-283923)

Also, some sites, like Youtube user channels, break when Delayed Script Execution is on. It would be awesome if that could be fixed, as Firefox, Safari, and Chrome can download scripts in parallel without breaking things. (or at least http://www.browserscope.org says they are capable of it)

Lucero Jr.Luxer88 Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:50:04 PM

Installed on my laptop, i can't recall the old native skin (i only use the default), but this new one is looking quite attractive - but obviously not as attractive as the default skin in all its win7 glory.

Also, acid3 seems to be running a bit smoother now. If it's true, NICE!

Now looking forward anxiously for the next mac build.

Jochen Thursday, March 11, 2010 11:50:51 PM

Er, i think it'd sound like a shift of plans as awkward as the complete shelving of 10.20.

Not sure whether this helps making Opera's public image effectively solid. Maybe you could release a "10.50" version for Mac implementing all the new stuff from Windows 10.51 - development on both platforms - for a good reason, may i add - have been completely out-of-sync anyway.

Just my possibly insignificant 2¢, again.
