Further improvements to stability on the Mac

, ,

In the middle of all these Windows release candidates, we want to show that Mac is still making progress towards final. This build includes all the fixes from the last Windows RC, plus further Mac and Widgets improvements. However perhaps I should let the change log speak for itself. wink

Known Issues
  • Some Carakan stability problems
  • Some PPC stability problems

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: things can go horribly wrong if you don’t backup before running it.

Past known issues should be included in newer build DESCRIPTION too p Anyways, awesome! :]

Will 10.50 get the opportunity to tab to the save password button? Or are we merging to "use the mouse more often" ?

linux devs are on holidays? I know most of people are windows users. Macs and linux people are not so many, but its not even funny. Since 10.10 there isnt any realy working build for unix. If it isnt crashing on plugins, it have other big bugs. Linux community screems for some working stuff! You will soon start to lose users of unix builds. Its nice to have new stuff, but where is stability? All the time we see posts about what cool stuff we will get, but realy people want something usable and fast.

Fixed DSK-285739 (CMD+CTRL+arrow no longer works)

Reported as fixed; broken still.

KornelNiLok Friday, March 19, 2010 4:57:55 PM

it's completely unusable. works horribly slow :/ the same with previous snapshot. i deleted all the preferences and still the same. i use Mac OS X 10.6.2.

Does anyone have the same issue?

peterp-sun Friday, March 19, 2010 5:03:24 PM

google street view still broken here, can someone confirm?
also - when using command - left arrow in SOME forms (like google's search field) first opera jumps to the beginning of the form, then jumps back in history, which kinda sucks... same for right arrow (which with automatic prefetching makes me nuts jumping forward in google's results)

windshear Friday, March 19, 2010 5:08:32 PM

Maximize from dock still doesn't work.

acaden Friday, March 19, 2010 5:09:55 PM

The last time I tried a PPC build (Linux) it went 2 minutes without crashing. Now on this Mac build I made it 10 minutes!

Witold Barylukmovax Friday, March 19, 2010 5:39:14 PM

Good work, changelog is impressive. Post some Unix snapshots soon! Eventually tell us what are you working on now in Unix versions. Last stable Unix version was released in November 2009, so show us something or will change into mad zombies wink

Oh stop it! I have enough of this kind of comments regarding unix knockout. It's since the 22th of december that people like you are crying because Linux is not developed as fast as windows version. Developers said it thousands of times: Opera 10.5 for Linux is the version with the biggest changes and it requires more time to be fully usable. Try to see the thing in this way: when 10.5 linux it's ready, future releases (opera 11, 12....78.5, ecc.. ) will be again simultaneous for all Os since the biggest changes are already made. So please wait a little more. smile

Harlekin Mondharlekinmond Friday, March 19, 2010 6:02:47 PM

Thank you so much for this build smile
I sent a bug report for a problem with the java applet on Runescape wink (which is then on all tabs).

Agreed. I'm really liking the latest linux snapshot. It's quite stable, and a lot of the weird integration issues are solved. (Not that i wouldn't still love a new snapshot).

Daniel Schaaffbenjer712 Friday, March 19, 2010 6:40:09 PM

Though I'm still getting occasional crashes I'm loving version 10.5! Its nice to have a fast alternative to safari with a much nicer user interface than firefox and chrome.

Links on this page don't work:

Hovering over a link shows the new address, but nothing happens when I click.

Davedfyfe Friday, March 19, 2010 7:30:53 PM

Thanks for the build, but I find it still very unstable. Crashes immediately on startup, or when opening a page.

Reported as DSK-289000

Crash log submitted.

OSX 10.4.11 PPC
Opera build 8291 (Universal)

Tri M. NguyenTriMN Friday, March 19, 2010 7:31:46 PM

The tabs loses its visual awesomeness when dragging it out of the tab bar (still holding the mouse button) and drag it back on the tab-bar. Then it gets the old boring arrow markers.

I can easly crash it in 5 seconds smile But i know mostly what is broke now (i.e. most of skin/visual configuration, site preferences, etc, chaning anything or just opening and clicking OK will crash opera). Beyond that it is quite stable. Crashes once per hour. smile

patcarlisle Friday, March 19, 2010 7:42:17 PM

Every time I upgrade the snapshot, including this one, on first run it loads only the welcome page instead of my saved tabs from the previous session (and then it overwrites the session and I have to copy in my backed up autosave.win).

Also, is there a way to turn off the multitouch zoom gestures? I find that I accidentally trigger it all the time when I mean to scroll slowly, and it's very annoying. It's nearly impossible to use the gesture to get back to 100% though (perhaps it should snap to certain values like that).

Tri M. NguyenTriMN Friday, March 19, 2010 7:45:23 PM

It's not that obvious that the close button in the save password panel is all the way to the left when all other buttons are at the right, and you look for a "don't save" button.

Well... I think it should be placed to the right with the other buttons smile (and give it some tab focusing bigsmile )

Edit: Opera crashing on this site: http://go.nrk.no/go/s/top_menu/http://www.nrk.no/nett-tv/direkte/nrk1/ (NRK NettTV). Using THIS build on 10.6.2 with all latest updates. (Don't think I had the site loading silverlight either, it was trying to load the wmv/qt player).

Didier CaizerguesOneCatFamily Friday, March 19, 2010 7:50:31 PM

Okay, here's the deal: NO function keys work... Not F2 to enter a URL other than in the address bar (which will overwrite the current tab instead of opening a new one), not F5 to reload the current page, etc... So there IS a problem with keyboard management on this new series of Mac builds. Am I really the only one to experience this?!

OlliOlli91 Friday, March 19, 2010 8:10:15 PM

Very stable build so far. No crash in the last few hours. But you could do some skin work for the left-sided preview tabs. The website-logos are still cut off. If you did some skin work (a little bit brighter wouldn't be too bad) this could soon go final...

Lucero Jr.Luxer88 Friday, March 19, 2010 8:27:27 PM

Thanks for the build!

rriiicchh Friday, March 19, 2010 8:38:54 PM

On VB forums when creating posts you should be able to highlight text and the press, for example, the insert link button and it would put the tags around the text you previously highlighted. On Opera 10.5 it puts the tags next to the highlighted texts, obviously not the biggest issue in the world but a bit annoying and a regression from 10.10.

Hein Tore Tønnesenheintore Friday, March 19, 2010 9:58:20 PM

I'm still experiencing extremely slow page loads with the 10.5 builds. It's been like that since the very first build. Right now it just keeps hanging, unable to retrieve even a favicon or the page's title.

To me it seems like a network/DNS problem, where Opera 10.5 doesn't play nicely with my setup. All other browsers and applications work just fine.

I always wipe the preferences before installing, so it's basically a clean install.

MacBook Pro 3,1 running 10.6.2.

I went to a totally random place in San Francisco on Google Maps. I dragged the Street View guy to a random place on the map, got to view the panorama for like 2 seconds and then Opera crashed.

I tried the exact procedure again, an Opera still crashed. Seems there's still problems with Flash.

Anyway, the bug reporter still doesn't work, as I described in the previous build. It just sits there after a crash, and hitting the "Send report" button returns a "not sent" message. If you tell it to restart *with a new session* then it just spawns a new Opera icon in the dock and a menu bar with just an "Opera" entry in there, but that's it. No window, no additional menu options.

Once you kill this flawed Opera instance, you go back to the bug reporter, and you have to choose to *not* restart Opera (and to start up with a blank session if there was a website that immediately brings Opera down), and *not* to report bugs. Then, after relaunching, it'll work.

Looking good to me although Dragonfly has a few troubles - watching the network on some sites causes it to skip back to the script inspector.

Bug found! When putting the window in full screen mode and the return to normal by pressing esc, the window:
1- doesn't remind it's old position on the screen, appearing always
on the left;
2- If you move/resize the window, the Unite, turbo, link. and zoom icons/fonts
looks bad

Already reported several times, but we have still the bug that doesn't allow to maximize the window clicking on the Opera dock icon

I've made a list of some graphics things that in my opinion are "not as beautiful as they should" p

top left part of Opera window:
New Mac dialogs imperfections: Wand/Block content bar: I hope to be helpful and that other mac-users will agree with me...

When preforming a gesture on a speeddial window the right mouse menu will appear and the gesture doesn't do its intended action until you click the right mouse menu away.

Please fix this the way it was in 10.10!!

I've tried that already, and fn+F2 only increases the brightness of my MacBook Pro's screen... As for changing keyboard options in System Settings, I'm sorry, but I don't know what changes I could make: should I alter settings that work well with ALL my other applications so that they can POSSIBLY work better with this build...? I mean, beta-testing is one thing, rendering your system unstable voluntarily is another thing. It could be interesting to know if other first-generation MacBook Pro users are encountering the same issues or not. Feel free to contribute! happy

Holding right click and scrolling to scroll through tabs still doesn't work!!

Didier CaizerguesOneCatFamily Saturday, March 20, 2010 9:20:06 AM

Here's my answer to an MP I got this morning, suggesting that I create a new user account on my MacBook Pro to test the latest Opera 10.50 build and make sure that my keyboard issues don't stem from some preference or other in my main/administrator account:

"Hi!

Thanks for the link and the suggestion, but I've tried to create a new account, with a clean set of preferences, and it didn't solve my problem: I still can't use the function keys with Opera 10.50, whereas with 10.10, no problem at all! I really want to emphasize that: my issues only show up under Opera 10.50; with 10.10, when I press F2, I do get the "Go to..." dialogue, and when I press F5, my current webpage does get refreshed.

So, in a nutshell, I seriously doubt this has to do with my machine at all. Must be some kind of flaw in this series of builds, but I'm stumped as to where it comes from... furious "

FWIW...

Edit: by the way, Command-R does refresh the current webpage, so perhaps F5 isn't active anymore in this new build, I don't know... As I mentioned before, all function keys work with my Windows copy of Opera 10.50, which is a bit strange.

Dont insult me with crying stuff. Im not using opera since 22 of december. I seen many of test builds before 10.50. Im impresed about number of "fix" words in unix changelog, but i want biger stability fixes and major functions improvment that are used in modern internet.I dont bother what is opera version now, its not important about number, but about what to do to make it usable, and then what to do about to add extra stuff. Now half of opera users on linux that i know are saying that those two things are reversed, extra stuff is added, but old major isnt fixed. Ill wait becasue i love opera since many years, buf if im forced to use other browsers for many situations. smile Im reading changelogs, testing soft etc, Just dont like to see my loved WB goind in wrong way, and loosing users.

BTW: I read comments and I know here are many trolls craying "build, build, i want now", but dont treat all people same way.

PS: and windows version could be 99.99 for me, and could launch space ships from garage. Im not sasying abything about way its developed in windows and its stability, functionality etc. Its windows users problem not my.

Love your work, wish devs a good luck etc.

olf Saturday, March 20, 2010 10:05:34 AM

For me this build has brought back the speed to Opera on my Mac/10.6.2.

I was still using Opera 10.10 build 6674 because with all subsequent releases, browsing was really slow.

This new build has changed that - nice!

TimFetimo Saturday, March 20, 2010 11:20:36 AM

I seem to be in the minority but this build, like olf, seems speedier and no crashes so far - and iwork.com works! This one seems pretty stable although I'm sure there are quirks to be discovered that come with usage. Although I do agree with Daniele, it would be nice to see some of those UI changes he put forth.
