New Opera 10.51 UNIX packages

, , , , , , , , ,

We couldn't help noticing a few of our UNIX users feeling left out after the previous Mac snapshot. Well, it turns you didn't have to wait too long for your own snapshot after all. bigsmile

In addition to containing fixes from the previous Mac snapshot and Windows RCs the big change is that new packages have arrived for Opera 10.51 UNIX. So if you were waiting for an .rpm or .deb package before you start testing, you no longer have any excuses. wink Please note however, that this does not mean that every issue is fixed. It simply means that you can test the packages themselves if you are comfortable with that or if the outstanding issues are not ones that bother you, then you could choose to install Opera 10.51 UNIX and make it your primary browser. In either scenario we would recommend you backup your profile ('~/.opera') first to allow you to downgrade should you need to, because once installed Opera will use the default profile (rather than a testing profile). You can of course continue to use the 'opera' script included in the root directory of an extracted tarball package to run Opera in place with a test profile, as has been the case with all Opera 10.5x snapshots so far.

I have also written a complementary article to this one on my own blog. That posting is primarily aimed at our intermediate to advanced UNIX users. If you are new to UNIX you may find it to be too much detail. However, if you are interested in packaging or just want to know a little bit more about workarounds for minor issues please check it out! If you are a user of the install script bundled in the tarball packages, you should certainly read in as the changes are potentially biggest for you.

As i said for windows snapshot opera 10.51 need to work on flash settings and memory leaks. Same apply to linux builds please team look deeply from top and swipe all the dust left in for more nice sleek BIG "O".

Also try to implement new feature like tab browsing available in full-screen mode also with auto hide feature.

+1000 but I think we will see that in Opera 11...

Blaz(ž) Pristavitalianjob44 Saturday, March 20, 2010 11:01:13 AM

Creating widget is hard enough and you're adding your own icon standard 22x22, don't be so mean and use 24x24 instead, or maybe is just a typo mistake knockout

Sorry but Widget system is a mess, why not add direct widgets access from main Opera menu and widget manager as external widget access when Opera is closed, Widgets are still just widgets and not external apps, don't add widgets to OS main menus that will confused the user that you like to say. Sidebar widgets will be just used when Opera is opened that at lest make some sense now, or someone will say that your are making elephant from fly.

Zotlan Saturday, March 20, 2010 11:02:23 AM

*sigh* trying to save preferences still crashes Opera.
Numeric period still is not working either.

>Language input issues

sad cry

richlv Saturday, March 20, 2010 11:18:54 AM

as a kde3 user, you might guess i have some... issues =)

1. one problem i had not seen mentioned before - when blocking the content, controls buttons have no text visible until they are clicked. same with offers to remember passwords - and i imagine all other prompts at the top of the page

2. when scrolling down while page is still loading and progress toolbar is set to pop-up at the bottom, toolbar first scrolls with the page, then is repainted at the bottom.

3. content is not restricted in width by the vertical scrollbar, so rightmost part of the page disappears behind it. this makes some rightmost-position controls harder to use (for example, + icon at http://www.openstreetmap.org/)

main problem for me now "Language input issues" ... sad
Especially Russian

UseLesS Saturday, March 20, 2010 11:32:17 AM

PLEASE fix the font problems.
The lack of clean, subpixel-accurate font rendering is the ONLY thing that prevents me from replacing opera 10.10 with 10.5x. You read a lot of text in your Browser, therefore good font rendering should be high priority!

kimyu92 Saturday, March 20, 2010 11:33:59 AM

cheers
using it on ubuntu!

Chris Hillschaz6 Saturday, March 20, 2010 11:37:17 AM

When using the command-line installer and installing to a custom prefix, the profile folder also uses the prefix. The profile folder shouls always be $HOME/.opera.

I have trouble reading some text, for example the save password bar. Presumably this is because of my color settings in KDE4. They look fine in other applications.

Ryandi Sandicoyomoyo Saturday, March 20, 2010 11:37:25 AM

I can't scroll between tabs sad is this a known issue?

-systemstyle is no longer needed, as it's now appearing as a GTK app. The default skin, and the UNIX skin aren't made that well for dark themes. I found that the theme 'Mint 1.4' works best. There are still a few minor issues, like the cursor while typing is hard to see (darker grey on lighter grey background) and some text isn't perfect when you type it (only happens when background of said input is white).

How is it possible that your (?) system gets 13011 points, but the fastest system registered is only 12620 points ?

This isn't my system, I just found it on google. Anyway in my opinion peacekeeper has to do this manually or has to have more similar results =)

Gousti FruitGoustiFruit Saturday, March 20, 2010 1:38:18 PM

One little problem for me: I'm used to change the opera:config#UserPrefs|TargetDestination value to "2" which is supposed to allow me to open any new tab in background. But for some reason in does not work with these 10.50+ linux builds, they always open on foreground !?

I installed OpenSUSE today. Before installing openSuse, there was no package for Unix.
