Lots of little fixes can result in a big improvement

, ,

Another new snapshot just one day after the last one! wink

This snapshot is particularly good news for our FreeBSD and Linux users, since it includes fixes to a number of irritating issues. We'd encourage *nix users to scan through the change log below. We have also made builds available on Windows and Mac. Whilst not much has changes for you guys there is a cross platform fix on mail, so if you were experiencing mail crashes this might be a good build to test.

With regards to bigger outstanding issues on UNIX (Plugin performance improvements [including Java], IME, fixes to fonts), these issues are being worked on, however we still need more time before we can share with you the fruits of our labour. Thanks for your patience!

Remember to keep comments relevant, descriptive and brief, and avoid repetition of issues that have alread been reported. Your comments may be removed if they are off-topic.

Not confirmed, downloads initiates properly with OSX (v10.6.3) build.

@Zoquete

it's probably improper rendering of fonts rather than broken fonts. In the image below, the web page is shown in firefox (right) and opera(left).

where did you get your flash from, is the the binary installer that you got it from or the packman repo

i have tried the binary installer and the package from this repo:

(keep in mind i'm using the 64bit flash plugin not the 32bit).

Your Opera uses different font, you are on linux, right? Here in xp sp3 is everything OK. I get the English version, not the arabic one, WHY? The source code is a mess sad

I have "fit to width" under full control, don't worry. This problem ignores original aspect ratio of the pictures, while "fit to width" respects it. But thanks anyway for your reply.

dkoroskin Sunday, May 16, 2010 1:56:34 PM

Opera started opening all the binaries (zip-archives, executables etc) inside the browser, instead of suggesting saving them to disk.

This is *so* annoying. Clean Windows 7 install.
Example: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/updaters/10/flashplayer_10_sa_debug.exe (paste into the address bar)

Other issue: one of the downloaded executables was saved as .html file (I pressed "save", choose a folder and pressed Enter. I typed no file extension, so it is Opera's fault).

Thanks!

If it's "almost all flash sites", then try a clean install of Opera with a default Preferences file. (Flash is working fine for me on OSX v10.6.3). Also, check your Flash installation, if it's identical to the flash copy being accessed by other browsers (see ABOUT screen for plug-in paths).

How odd! It's not a snapshot problem though: I've got the same weirdness in Opera 10.10.

Looking at the source, Zoquete is incorrect:

object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="946" height="393" data="home.swf"

They've clearly used the correct MIME-type for the object.
I can only think that someone's got the conditional comments a bit messed up...

By the way, if you just edit string 1309 in ASCIIMathMLwFallback.js from "var nd = AMisMathMLavailable();" to "var nd = null;" all will working fine smile (AMisMathMLavailable() function is not working properly)
No one think about cross-brousing when this javascript was writen knockout

dennisdotse Sunday, May 16, 2010 6:54:28 PM

opera keeps adding weird files like "opr2fa2NB" in the folder where I keep my bookmarks file. Most of them are zero kb, and they seem to be created more and more often.
edit: on closer inspection, these get created all the time, but most of them are deleted. still - and this happens more and more frequent - some of them are not.

also, opera sometimes won't quit until I activate the window or move the mouse over it.

Interesting... There is nothing but flash and java. I wonder that list was empty before installing these plugins (or one of them cleared the list?)

I have a fresh install of Win7 and Opera (the OS is barely a day old). Why would I have this issue? Could it be an installer issue? I didn't upgrade, just installed latest snapshot, *.msi version.

Thanks!

dkoroskin Sunday, May 16, 2010 8:19:45 PM

I think I didn't have this issue before installing flash. I remember downloading nvidia driver, and Opera showed Save as dialog. OTOH, that said driver got saved as HTML (even though it was an executable). I had to launch file manager to change the extension before installing it.

After upgrading my opera 10.53 to the newest version (10.54 build 3390) images in speed dial got stretched. Is it some kind of bug or I have to change resolutions of logo images (currently 256x150 - 265x60 thumbnails)? confused

It's the webserver that screws up, when you request the /home.swf file you get the headers
HTTP/1.1 200 OK

Server: Apache

Content-Type should be "application/x-shockwave-flash", not "text/html".

No build today? wait

I've just came across a strange bug.

- I've only seen the half of my installed widgets on the sidepanel
- one element is usually 2 lines high, and I've cannot select the widget by clicking on the second line (the one contains the name of the author)
- switched back to standard skin, yet the problem remained
- now, here's the turn: I accidentally performed a backflip on the sidebar, and the problem was gone!

Unfortunately, now I don't really know how to reproduce the problem...

Arguggi Monday, May 17, 2010 5:07:44 PM

I don't know if anyone has already said this, but since the bugged download dialog seems to be a widespread problem can any one confirm that this bug only occours when you click a download link with the "open in new tab" (mouse wheel), otherwise it works fine?

Am I the only one having problems with Opera rendering large image? With Loading set to draw instantaneously or 1 second, Opera stops drawing images beyond a certain point (~5-10%) unless fully downloaded. This happens more often if you scroll or switch tabs. Happens with all 10.5x builds including snapshots.

EricJH Monday, May 17, 2010 11:12:16 PM

When you want to keep Opera snappy let is clean cache when exiting. And when installing snapshots I would recommend to start each new version with a clean profile (i.e. delete the operaprefs.ini when Opera is not running).

I have never seen Opera get slower when the firewall is not letting that traffic through.

I would say start with the two basics I gave in the above and see what they bring you in the longer run.

First of all, great job @ Opera Dekstop Team & keep on ruling!

Can u plz implement something in the next final Opera-Version (which would be 10.54 I assume)? That would be 4 Windows 7...

When u play a video e.g. @ YouTube it never shows me a real-time preview of the video in the superbar. The window with the vid running doesn't show any preview @ all. Hope you guys can fix that. Google Chrome & Firefox e.g. do it real-time, otherwise Opera's the best!

3rd-party software firewalls running on the same system you wish to protect are useless. uninstall them and use the built-in firewall in windows (Xp and above). it protects you fine and additionally most internet (dsl-) routers today have built-in hardware-firewalls wink.
And I wouldn't trust this company (comodo) who sell their certificates to known malware-sites.
