An Important piece of the puzzle
By Remigiusz Bondarowicz2beR. Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:00:00 AM
Opera is one of the most customizable browsers in the world, with many powerful, built-in features, but that is not enough for us.
Today we go a step further -- we add another piece of the puzzle: Opera extensions!
I am happy to share an alpha version of Opera 11 with extensions on board.
Extensions
Opera users can already extend their browser with Unite and userJS. You have also our standalone web applications Widgets. But now we're making it even better. Opera extensions allow you to easily equip your Opera browser with extra features. You can get them from our extensions catalog at https://addons.labs.opera.com/
With the Opera 11 alpha, you can personalize your browser with all your pet features and functionality. From now on, it is you who defines the best experience with the Opera browser.
Our focus when building an extension mechanism has been to enable closer integration with web pages and web applications, and we look forward to see what the creative developer community will come up with.
Opera 11 alpha marks the beginning of the extensions mechanism in Opera. Before Opera 11 goes final we plan to include auto update for the extensions and a few other nice features to expand the functionality exposed to developers.
Are you a developer? That's great! I have something for you!
Opera extensions are based on the W3C Widgets specification and are built on fully open standards.
You can create your own extensions using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and supported APIs.
You can find more information in our article about how to make Opera extensions.
You have created the perfect extension? Wanna share it with more than 50 million people?
All you have to do is to submit your extension at https://addons.labs.opera.com/
Opera Presto 2.6.37
Opera 11 alpha is not only about extensions. We equipped it with the brand new Opera Presto 2.6.37 with improved performance, hundreds of bug fixes, enhancements in Web Standards support and support for Websockets.
A new installer
At Opera we love speed and like to make everything fast, not only the browser but also the installation of Opera. Opera 11 will ship with a new installer for Windows. The installation/upgrading is now twice as fast, and the installer download is about 10% smaller. Off course we'll optimize it even further in future builds.

So if you are a developer, and there currently doesn't seem to be a way to create your super cool new extension, just wait a bit

The installer doesn't ask, but just like the previous one, has an 'Options' button. If you don't use the options, this installer will install in the folder 'C:\Program files\Opera 11 Alpha' (or an existing 'beta' folder where you installed the first public 10.50 alpha build for example). You can run the installer again an pick a different installation folder if you want - like the old classic installer, and unlike the old standard MSI installer, you can install the same build as many times as you like.

Extensions seems as simplified copy of Chrome extensions. I hope just yet.

Also, I have selected "Download all snapshots" (opera:config#AutoUpdate|DownloadAllSnapshots) but it doesn't seem to work
Anyway, I'm going to install manually! Hope it's as good as it sounds!

Use the 'Options' button in the installer to pick your favorite installation folder. BUT, in that case, remember to RESET your address bar to DEFAULT. Otherwise you will NOT see the extensions buttons there.Dag FridtunTulkas # Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:46:20 AM

I managed to get to the site by dropping down to simple http. The following link will get you to the extensions page and will allow installing them:

However, I don't see any button or 'hello world' after installing the extensions. They just appear in the manage extensions list.
The buttons appear in the 'customize buttons' screen, however cannot be dragged.

edit: extensions installed from the tutorial pages seem to have the wrong content type and get corrupted. But from the addons page the content-type is set ok.
