Opera Desktop Team

An Important piece of the puzzle

, , ,

Many of you were waiting for this day to come ...
Opera is one of the most customizable browsers in the world, with many powerful, built-in features, but that is not enough for us.
Today we go a step further -- we add another piece of the puzzle: Opera extensions!
I am happy to share an alpha version of Opera 11 with extensions on board.

Extensions
Opera users can already extend their browser with Unite and userJS. You have also our standalone web applications Widgets. But now we're making it even better. Opera extensions allow you to easily equip your Opera browser with extra features. You can get them from our extensions catalog at https://addons.labs.opera.com/
With the Opera 11 alpha, you can personalize your browser with all your pet features and functionality. From now on, it is you who defines the best experience with the Opera browser.

Our focus when building an extension mechanism has been to enable closer integration with web pages and web applications, and we look forward to see what the creative developer community will come up with.

Opera 11 alpha marks the beginning of the extensions mechanism in Opera. Before Opera 11 goes final we plan to include auto update for the extensions and a few other nice features to expand the functionality exposed to developers.

Are you a developer? That's great! I have something for you!
Opera extensions are based on the W3C Widgets specification and are built on fully open standards.
You can create your own extensions using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and supported APIs.
You can find more information in our article about how to make Opera extensions.

You have created the perfect extension? Wanna share it with more than 50 million people?
All you have to do is to submit your extension at https://addons.labs.opera.com/

Opera Presto 2.6.37
Opera 11 alpha is not only about extensions. We equipped it with the brand new Opera Presto 2.6.37 with improved performance, hundreds of bug fixes, enhancements in Web Standards support and support for Websockets.

A new installer
At Opera we love speed and like to make everything fast, not only the browser but also the installation of Opera. Opera 11 will ship with a new installer for Windows. The installation/upgrading is now twice as fast, and the installer download is about 10% smaller. Off course we'll optimize it even further in future builds.

Are there any changes to the preferences / settings etc in this build, or can I just copy them over from the previous installation as usual? I'm using the Mac version which often seems a bit hit-and-miss as to whether it creates a new folder for the preferences or uses the existing one.

Can we install on top of 10.70 builds?

Martin RauscherHades32 Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:14:57 AM

What they failed to say: The extensions API is far from complete - there will be much more functionality for extension in the Final.
So if you are a developer, and there currently doesn't seem to be a way to create your super cool new extension, just wait a bit smile

Installation didn't ask me for anything, couldn't upgrade from 10.70 so I have an empty profile now ? At least it didn't overwrite my 10.70 installation, I can still use it separately...

The installer doesn't ask, but just like the previous one, has an 'Options' button. If you don't use the options, this installer will install in the folder 'C:\Program files\Opera 11 Alpha' (or an existing 'beta' folder where you installed the first public 10.50 alpha build for example).

You can run the installer again an pick a different installation folder if you want - like the old classic installer, and unlike the old standard MSI installer, you can install the same build as many times as you like.

A.RuzanovLex1 Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:28:57 AM

New installer seems very good.
Extensions seems as simplified copy of Chrome extensions. I hope just yet.

Yes. It is a test build, and a continuation of the 10.70 line.

That will be offered later on, when we are near feature complete and the new strings are translated.

On Mac, this build should not use your normal Opera settings. I'm not sure if it creates a new alpha folder or reuses an existing one.

Since extension page is broken I've tried adding them from developer page: http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/opera-extensions-hello-world/ (bottom of the page)
Unfortunately this is what I get http://screens.devocado.com/dev/2010-10-21_1236.png

How can I install over 10.70?

Leoleo42 Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:41:45 AM

Is it possible to install it over or in addition to a previous Opera (10.60 or 10.70) version ?

shaneh Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:41:59 AM

Having issues downloading .oex files from the tutorial etc pages. They open in the browser (see link posted by Justas: http://screens.devocado.com/dev/2010-10-21_1236.png ). Saving them to disk and renaming them to .zip doesn't result in a valid zip file. Dragging them to the browser, Opera says "installation was unsuccessful".

I tried:

http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/opera-extensions-buttons-badges-and-popups/example-button.oex

http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/opera-extensions-hello-world/hello.oex

I upgraded from Opera 10.70

Ivan Filhohorphus Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:45:45 AM

Please guys, say the Profile the build is going to use in the post, it'll save lots of trouble for lots of people bigsmile

Also, I have selected "Download all snapshots" (opera:config#AutoUpdate|DownloadAllSnapshots) but it doesn't seem to work confused

Anyway, I'm going to install manually! Hope it's as good as it sounds! bigsmile

Use the 'Options' button in the installer to pick your favorite installation folder. BUT, in that case, remember to RESET your address bar to DEFAULT. Otherwise you will NOT see the extensions buttons there.

I think https://addons.labs.opera.com/addons/extensions/ should be http and not https, i believe the correct url is http://addons.labs.opera.com/addons/extensions/

I think they're didn't set the correct htaccess.

mulander Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:47:29 AM

The default extension page doesn't work (with the https protocol):
https://addons.labs.opera.com/addons/extensions/
I managed to get to the site by dropping down to simple http. The following link will get you to the extensions page and will allow installing them:
http://addons.labs.opera.com/addons/extensions/

shaneh Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:47:54 AM

Saving the .oex files using IE9 then dragging them to Opera installs extensions ok. Must be a problem with the content type in Opera treating it as txt.

However, I don't see any button or 'hello world' after installing the extensions. They just appear in the manage extensions list.

The buttons appear in the 'customize buttons' screen, however cannot be dragged.

René-Gilles DeberdtNao Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:50:33 AM

Yay, it's out!
Let's have some fun writing plugins! Tab grouping, anyone? If it can be done, I'll give it a try when I have some time. I'm dying that get that one feature...

Yowanvista Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:50:40 AM

Seems opera copied FF4 extension manager lol

Mikkel Brevik Mehusmikkelme Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:50:48 AM

So you stuffed in a couple more features into Opera and reduced the download-size with 3 MB? Nicely done smile

shaneh Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:51:35 AM

Note - buttons for extensions only appear after doing a toolbar reset. They don't seem to appear on a customised toolbar, and also aren't draggable from the customise buttons screen.

edit: extensions installed from the tutorial pages seem to have the wrong content type and get corrupted. But from the addons page the content-type is set ok.

Danieldan1el Thursday, October 21, 2010 9:52:23 AM

Holy shit, that is a fast installer!
