Barracuda gets some teeth

Hi,

Today we will ship the first of many changes for Speed Dial that is targeted for the upcoming Barracuda release. It will however be delivered in separate pieces before you will see the entire puzzle laid out.

Opera's Speed Dial was first introduced in an Opera 9.20 snapshot on Feb 28th 2007. The idea came about as we observed that people kept typing the same addresses for a few of their favourite websites again and again. Getting to their top web sites could mean hundreds or thousands of clicks on the keyboard in a single day. The solution we came up with was very simple, but very powerful. And today it's still one of the most loved, and copied, features in Opera.

But now it's time to move Speed Dial to the next level. We are going to make Speed Dial more fluid, dynamic and easier to use! What is included in this snapshot is the new flow layout. Please remember this is just a first peek at the changes we are making. Many very smart and innovative solutions are on the way. So stay tuned!

Also being introduced in this snapshot is the first stage of improvements to discover more of the features of Opera. Don't worry, there won't be any pop-up bubbles or constant nagging. Instead we are going to have subtle animations and messages to remind you of features you can use in Opera.

Let us know if you can find the three features we have added discoverability to. smile

Known issues
  • Speed Dial synchronization is disabled for now
  • Address bar not focused when starting Opera with extensions
  • Tabs opened by extensions open to the left instead of the right
  • Using the Content Blocker while logged in to Opera Link can cause a crash
  • Ctrl+Shift+V opening in a new background tab
  • Slightly older skin
  • Mouse panning broken on Windows
  • Drag and drop to Attachments field opens files in Opera on Windows
  • No HTML5 media playback on Mac
  • International font settings are not remembered on Mac
  • Broken Cyrillic local paths on Mac
  • Cannot copy text from certain applications on 64bit Linux/FreeBSD
  • KDE File selector can not save to a non-existing file on Linux/FreeBSD
  • Workspace is incorrect with the X11 toolkit on Linux/FreeBSD

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Did anyone else see this comment from the 2007 post? Some guy's first and honest reaction to Speed Dial!

digg comments [if anybody bothers to add this] should tell you what market thinks about gizmos like that. with xul you can make extension like that in just an hour. without problems with middleclick and others. if somebody find it usefull that is.

i realy dont now what you had in mind making a great secret of this. this is just another feature, tat make opera look more nerd'ish than it should. cool factor -1

Spot on up lol

Read the "Known issues".

As long as I can decide to have a rather static Speed Dial, the way it is now, instead of that crap Chrome thinks helpful ...

Lucalucaviozzi Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:03:36 PM

Mhmhmhm i think too it's better to have a "choice" for the speed dial way :| I prefear a static speed dial too, so pls let the users choose between the speed dial modes! T_T

Onecar Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:04:21 PM

I can't see any difference in Speed Dial comparing to stable build of Opera 11. Am I alone?

João EirasxErath Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:05:51 PM

Quite weird. The big plus button in the speeddial can be dragged into the tab bar (but does nothing).

AzraelAzrael1 Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:06:36 PM

On the plus side : the Speed dial is no longer cluttered with useless empty boxes.
On the bad side : all the boxes are far too tiny and clustered on the top, exactly where i don't want them.
Let's hope the next snapshot will add the possibility top move them around and enlarge them. Until then i will have to grin and bear it.

What prevents you from having a "static" speed dial in this build?

Onecar Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:08:13 PM

Okey I get it, speed dial has no limitations. Nice, looking forward for the upcoming stuff.

setsutekh Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:08:31 PM

Right now, if I have a lot of speed dials, and I do, I have to scroll to the bottom EVERY time I open speed dial just to reach those bottom speed dials.

IMO, having speed dials to be text only (so more sites can be on the screen at the same time) would be much more useful.

What's the point of Speed dial if i have to scroll to open sites? Not what I'd call fast...

Mustafa OğuzinBusteR Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:08:31 PM

CORE-35514 (Opera freezes on some turkish sites) seems fixed under Win7 up

Crabman Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:09:07 PM

Won't complain too much, first peek and all, but right now there's an awful lot of wasted space. I use the 5x4 config and it fits my window perfectly but with the new version I can see less than half of my entries on screen at any time.

how i do it?
Dunno your opera but mine has a page that i have to scroll down to look all my speed dial bookmarks :|

nahtanoj999 Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:11:18 PM

I found one discoverability feature: the banner at the bottom of the screen saying to press space to go to the next page. The problem is, it showed before I got to the bottom of the page, so it was lying.

The content of the speed dials is still determined by you, no change there.

The speed dial page is now scrollable! The large "+" speed dial at the bottom can be improved. This empty speed dial occupies too much space and reduces the size of other speed dials. A much smaller button at the end of the speed dial list will be fine.

IusedtobeOOlli91 Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:16:20 PM

So now you get your proper problem description, can't believe you haven't seen this.

First thing: When updating from the last build, Speed Dial preview tab is green, so does not work. After changing to Speed Dial for the first time this becomes ok.

So the worst thing: I'm using 4x3 Speed Dial and when going to this build the previews are in an other order and just use half of the pages space (as I already wrote). Plus they're much too small. And this all occurs in the Mac version and I can't find it in the known issues. Maybe this is intended and the additional space is used for the flowing Dial, but I don't want to have more than those 12 prevs on it.

And I know that this is just a snapshot, I'm using snapshots for years.

Pallab DeIndyan Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:16:35 PM

Ericksman Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:16:45 PM

David Tsunamydavidtsunamy Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:17:50 PM

Please, remove the scroll to see the lastest layout and add "Layout size" option!!

Topimrkukov Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:19:55 PM

Scrollable speed dials... try with small screen netbook.
Back to previous. ->

Cyro Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:24:13 PM

As an improvement, I'd like to have more control over their thumbnails. Like for an example instead of having a diminished version of the entire website, to actually pick up a square of a website and set it as thumbnail.
Refreshable, of course. An example would be stockings or weather of a specific website...
Another example of speed dial thumbnail is the DT blog. I could select a square of the first post placement.

Also, to categorize them into different groups. But I bet you are already working on that.

Pierrera-mon Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:24:38 PM

Let us know if you can find the three features we have added discoverability to.

lng diff :
-1355926367="You can type a search word directly in the address field."
-1037440252="You can type '%1' + space and your search word to get search suggestions from '%2' here."
-486602218="Press space to go to the next page"

In this build, Opera is still unusable when Link is enabled - it seems to be the reason for lots of crashes.

Not many people store his icons on the desktop arranged by Name/Size/... Many people like create some "pictures" from icons smile same with Speed dial. Don't need force them keep shortcuts as list (new version). Allow them use only first and last gaps, but see all nine(choose your number) smile

potke Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:30:18 PM

Opera still crashes when I try to import to feed list

Grasli Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:31:48 PM

You probably know this already as it says "slightly older skin"..;
In thumbnails views there is a graphics bug when the last tab is a STACKED tab (the glass line overlaps the New Tab-button). Probably known. wink

Same as previous build;
In maximized normal Opera view, the top glass-line of tab-stacks is not visible. Too little space at the top. Its shown in thumbbnails view on the top (but not bottom!), but in normal view there's too little space up there.. wink

Laurentlsaplai Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:32:05 PM

well, speed dial isn't much different for me. I see it needs some scrolling now but I guess it is temporary. As I don't really use it in my daily usage, I'm not sure it will make much of a difference.
Speed dial is really useful on my Opera Mini. On the desktop, I keep tabs opened.

One general observation: dialogs (such as Preference) are not scaled for Netbooks and some content is hidden out of the screen,

Keep the new builds come in. We're having too much fun with them!

Mod0528 Thursday, February 24, 2011 4:33:15 PM

In this snapshot too much wasted space on speeddial. I'm using 3x5 and now have half mine 24" monitor screen is empty. Any chance to make bigger speeddial icons?

Do you have a very large monitor? Or else there's something seriously wrong, and a screenshot might be useful then. We know the speed dials are currently of a fixed size, but 12 dials shouldn't look too weird on a 1680*1050 screen for example.

1)acid 3 test 97/100 and if I want to do test again,it is saying "Scripting must be enabled to use this test." It is still here from first alpha of barracuda and it isn´t in known issues, why?
2)DSK-327834 (Crash on startup for upgrade from 11.01.1190 to 11.10.24399)-well,we haven´t had a build 11.10.24399 yet smile so.. bigsmile
