Speed Dial, and other fixes

, , , , ,

Today's snapshot fixes numerous issues, including Speed Dial bugs, various crashes, and content blocker synchronization problems.

In the previous build, we changed the way we display thumbnails/images in Speed Dial. This was done to make it easier to recognize your favorite web sites quicker. If you would like to learn more about how your site can control what appears in Opera's Speed Dial, Dev.Opera has a more detailed overview of the available options. When a site doesn't specify the look of the Speed Dial image, Opera tries to zoom in on the page to make it more recognizable.

This build does not contain any changes to the way Speed Dial thumbnails are generated, but there are numerous bug fixes to Speed Dial in general.

Take a look at the changelog for more information on the changes since the previous build.

Known issues

  • Crash on startup for some users
  • Windows Installer crashes for some users
  • Fraud protection not working correctly
  • Check for updates entry is sometimes missing on the Mac
  • Custom searches are not always preserved after upgrade
  • Possible clipping of some dialogs under Linux/FreeBSD
  • Some Speed Dials refresh every second if you upgrade between 11.10-2020 and 11.10-2025: This only affects snapshot users and will not affect those who upgrade from the stable, so will not be fixed.

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Thanks for this new version. It works fine on Mandriva 2010.2, i386. Previous versions (prior 2033) were very problematic.

Since previous build I have now all speed dials with empty thumbnails. This isn't exactly that kind of improvement I was hoping to see.

I guess that depends on resolution on your monitor(s), what is yours?

Clean or dirty build can make a lot of difference how Opera reacts.
Did you do a clean install?

The configuration-button in Speeddial is wrong in a german install here. The text shows "Configure...". Simply not yet translated or is this a bug?

I can confirm this on Win7 x86. Not 100% but up to 50%.
Also since last build Opera uses a lot CPU with visual mouse gestures.

If you have a dual core then it is like 100%. One core fully accelerated.

    eliotcougar Friday, March 11, 2011 8:03:24 PM

I was so incredibly happy to see
CORE-34650 (Memory leaks caused by missing call to deallocate() on the scriptable object)

But now I realized that this version crashes from start for me... sad
Previous build worked here... It's not "the same" crash, it's new one...

I really need the old speed dial view back! It is impossible to see which pages to open when I can't see the content! cry

You're right, I have dual core. So one core uses up ~100% CPU.

    More excellent work from Opera!
    I haven't had any cpu problems...(Mandriva 2010.2 i386 KDE).
Haven't had any crashes in most of these builds as well.
The Speed Dial changes are good. It would be nice to have the option per thumbnail to use the new way, or the old way.
But other wise, keep it up smile

Opera still removing all custom search engines. And restore defaults after restart.

Did a "Portable" install to another folder... Now it doesn't crash... I guess I have to reset preferences in my main installation...

Same problem here. All my Speed Dial thumbnails are blank.

    Devocalypse Friday, March 11, 2011 8:32:22 PM

One of the better reasons to use SD is to see if a page has changed by refreshing. By zooming around the page randomly in search of a logo, that is no longer possible. The link rel thumbnail on the other hand is a complete joke. A funny/lame example would be 2 speed dials on different sections of deviantart now both have the identical ugly 48pixel DA icon (or is it logo) and no visual way to differentiate them.

If Opera Software really wishes to go that extra mile, a more sensible solution would be to present the entire page to the users and allow them to crop a region themselves, similar to how most sites allow you to crop an avatar, as well as retain and remember the offset of that region upon refreshing of the thumbnails. If not, there should at least be an option to use the old generation method.

I am aware they are still pretty much work in progress, but in my opinion the new thumbnails are pretty much useless and some of them come out plain ugly.

DSK-313944 ("Ctrl+Shift+V" opens in a new background tab)

For those that had this bug, is this now fixed for real?

For me it just seemed to make things even worse. The last time changelog mentioned fixing this bug it changed the Paste & Go to open a new tab, except when done from address bar. Now Paste & Go opens a new tab, even if you are paste&go'ing directly in address bar... not very logical since you paste and then click Go manually, it doesn't open a new tab, as it shouldn't.

Same here. It's always been like that in Opera (while other browsers can't do it smoothly).

Well, okay... There are some "upgrade problems"... I noticed that "clean installation" works fine...

    Here's what I did:
    I went to C:\Users\%Your_Username%\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera
and manually cleared theese folders (they are for history, so it's safe to delete):
cache, icons, opcache, thumbnail_cache and thumbnails

    Only after that Opera started...

@Jan Standal: Huffingtonpost.com is an example. I used to be able to view the top stories in the speed dial, but now I can only see the very top of the page. It is useless to me. I use speed dial to preview content. If I just want to open a page I can use bookmarks.
