Speed Dial, and other fixes
By Alexey Feldgendlerfeldgendler. Friday, March 11, 2011 3:33:37 PM
In the previous build, we changed the way we display thumbnails/images in Speed Dial. This was done to make it easier to recognize your favorite web sites quicker. If you would like to learn more about how your site can control what appears in Opera's Speed Dial, Dev.Opera has a more detailed overview of the available options. When a site doesn't specify the look of the Speed Dial image, Opera tries to zoom in on the page to make it more recognizable.
This build does not contain any changes to the way Speed Dial thumbnails are generated, but there are numerous bug fixes to Speed Dial in general.
Take a look at the changelog for more information on the changes since the previous build.
Known issues
- Crash on startup for some users
- Windows Installer crashes for some users
- Fraud protection not working correctly
- Check for updates entry is sometimes missing on the Mac
- Custom searches are not always preserved after upgrade
- Possible clipping of some dialogs under Linux/FreeBSD
- Some Speed Dials refresh every second if you upgrade between 11.10-2020 and 11.10-2025: This only affects snapshot users and will not affect those who upgrade from the stable, so will not be fixed.
WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

But now I realized that this version crashes from start for me...
Previous build worked here... It's not "the same" crash, it's new one...

I haven't had any cpu problems...(Mandriva 2010.2 i386 KDE).
Haven't had any crashes in most of these builds as well.
The Speed Dial changes are good. It would be nice to have the option per thumbnail to use the new way, or the old way.
But other wise, keep it up

Same problem here. All my Speed Dial thumbnails are blank.
Devocalypse # Friday, March 11, 2011 8:32:22 PM
If Opera Software really wishes to go that extra mile, a more sensible solution would be to present the entire page to the users and allow them to crop a region themselves, similar to how most sites allow you to crop an avatar, as well as retain and remember the offset of that region upon refreshing of the thumbnails. If not, there should at least be an option to use the old generation method.
I am aware they are still pretty much work in progress, but in my opinion the new thumbnails are pretty much useless and some of them come out plain ugly.

For those that had this bug, is this now fixed for real?
For me it just seemed to make things even worse. The last time changelog mentioned fixing this bug it changed the Paste & Go to open a new tab, except when done from address bar. Now Paste & Go opens a new tab, even if you are paste&go'ing directly in address bar... not very logical since you paste and then click Go manually, it doesn't open a new tab, as it shouldn't.

Here's what I did:
I went to C:\Users\%Your_Username%\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera
and manually cleared theese folders (they are for history, so it's safe to delete):
cache, icons, opcache, thumbnail_cache and thumbnails
Only after that Opera started...
