Fixes and improvements - on demand plug-in sitepref, Ctrl-click support

, , ,

Here's the next Opera Next. This Swordfish snapshot has another bunch of bug fixes and improvements for you, some eagerly awaited, and polishes the Speed Dial and Password Sync some more.

Opera was the first browser that gave you the option to load tabs in the background by holding Ctrl+Shift down while clicking. Now, you can do it with one key less, just Ctrl is enough. This change aligns this feature with how it works in other browsers. Just like with Ctrl+Shift, you can also hold the Ctrl-key while clicking bookmarks or the 'Search' option in the context menu of selected text, to make the resulting pages open in a background tab. Holding Shift while clicking links etc still opens in a new foreground tab.

Highlights[/SIZE]
  • Manually zoom the Speed Dials to 30% (minimum zoom was 50%)
  • Paste and Go in the search field will perform a search, instead of loading as an URL
  • The 'On Demand Plugin' option is now available in Site Preferences
  • Ctrl-click on a link to open it in a background tab (Ctrl+Shift-click will also still work for now)

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

    Thanks.
There are issues with the manual check for updates, nothing found!

    IusedtobeOOlli91 Friday, May 27, 2011 2:17:43 PM

Is that a bug or intended? When I double-click the tabbar the new tab opens in the background, when I click the + it opens in the foreground. Since I always just double-click this new behaviour leads to closing wrong tabs and needing to extra-activate the tab I just created with another click.
Please fix that - hope it's not a feature. bigeyes

Edit: Even when I click links in other programmes the clicked site loads in a background tab - probably this is not intended. I'm on OSX.

Spellchecker still doesn't work in a TinyMCE editor window. Was submitted as a bug several builds ago.

Not a massive problem, but annoying nonetheless.

Looks nice as for five minute install smile Even without HWA (which I don't want now) you can interest people with interesting features! BTW: Some of you Opera guys said once (year ago?) that you will look into integrating with Linux libnotify. Will it appear someday? (Even not now, but I would like to know if it will ever happen).
    Thanks for the snapshot! bigsmile

Thanks, I was about to ask the same thing.

    . . . When will it be enabled anyway? . . .

For some reason, I have the feeling that there's some big core update pending. We didn't have any update in this regard since Opera 11.11.

Ctrl-click on a link to open it in a background tab (Ctrl+Shift-click will also still work for now)

Can you please provide an option to disable this feature? I am way too used to clicking on images to save them. And this feature breaks that functionality. Can this be changed from the keyboard/mouse shortcut settings?

We are evaluating optional keyboard modifiers, for example Alt+click or Ctrl+Alt+click. But we have to make sure they don't conflict with other things.

There is an extension to enable Ctrl+click to open tabs in the backgrounds already, so perhaps it will be possible to change the new behavior back using an extension as well:

    https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/details/control-click/

I have not looked into whether or not it is actually possible, though.

Cool thanks. I do hope I can find a work around otherwise I would be stuck with the 2nd last build!

Opera is the only browser that makes it easy to quickly save images by control+clicking on them. This functionality is now gone (for images with links...). hehe.

thank you, downloading now. auto-update seems to be not working on build 1016, though

    Andreaandrea1816 Friday, May 27, 2011 2:52:07 PM

May seem a dumb question, but how is the speed dial callout movable?

    tisazalay Friday, May 27, 2011 2:52:17 PM

When you close all tabs, and you press Shift+Ctrl+Alt+H to hide Opera to the tray a settings dialog is briefly showed. When you restore Opera from the tray a custom button (to hide opera to the tray) next to the tab trash can is disabled until you open any dialog (like settings) or a new tab.
Weird behavior not seen before, specially the ghost setting when hiding to the tray.

There is still a bug with opera turbo when using twitter
Activate opera turbo, log-in in twitter, when you enter there is a message that you have reached the limits of use try again in 1 hour, then scroll down the page and the page will reload automatically.
    I'm using Windows 7 64 bits
It happens too with the stable build 11.11

I'm getting it on Mac OSX; links that open new tabs and links from external programs are opening in the background. It's driving me mad because I keep thinking nothing's happened when I click a link.

OK, my mistake, that happens when you have at least two opera windows, and you hide only one, the contents of the second one are briefly shown, then both windows hide to the tray.

Thank you, finally something really (The 'On Demand Plugin' option is now available in Site Preferences) important.
Still waiting zzz for 2 more things - remember page zoom and really better search in address bar. What I mean?
    Let's take a sample.
    1. Open http://746246.ieskok.lt/ Remember this man as his nick - incognitus
    2. Close tab
    3. Open new tab and try to search by word incognitus, in Opera no chances to find like this (FF, Chrome, even sh**ty Ie can find). Can some1 normally in people language, not geeks explain why Opera can't find in this way? By the way need to mention, that in address bar write incognitus, then press search history and yes I see 746246.ieskok.lt/ as incognitus.
Opera please, these 2 features and I'' broke up with FF jester

    Bug:
Flash content is being loaded even when "plug-ins only on demand" is enabled

One example is the Sony website.
Another very prominent example is the music player on Myspace, for example here.

"Plug-ins only on demand" is pretty pointless when it's still possible for websites to display Flash content.

I don't have a middle button, I dream of the day that you can use extensions on the mail panel, so I can long click to open links in the background, right now the only way to accomplish it WITH ONE FINGER is with the right click menu and selecting open in background tab, bother some for many links like a newspaper on my laptop (no space for a three button mouse)... I'll keep dreaming!

Still can not update. Seems that the processor that the 1016-1018 use are beyond my Athlon.
Anyone confirm that they may be having the same problem?
It looks as if future versions of OPERA will be beyond my older computer's capability.
    Anyone else?

It's a TinyMCE thing, when initialing try give this parameter:
    gecko_spellcheck : true

By default now TinyMCE disable the spell checker by adding a spellcheker="false" attribute in the body of the editing area
