Featherweight - first phase

, ,

Good morning, this is Helmers from Opera User experience and Graphics (UxG). Today we are excited to share results of the first phase of project Featherweight. Our goal has been to make Opera as light, bright and user-friendly as possible—without sacrificing power or flexibility. We want the user interface to match the speed of our rendering engine.

Featherweight has been under wraps until now, so that we may present a comprehensive solution, not bits and pieces. Some changes are highly visible, such as those to the address and status bars, but you will find that we have reworked much of the skin throughout—including a brand new icon set. This is the first step in project Featherweight, and a major collaborative effort between the UxG and Desktop teams. Enjoy!

Highlights
  • Brand new toolbar icon set
  • Brighter, softer colors for backgrounds and borders
  • Padding and alignment improvements
  • Updated status bar design and content
  • No more button borders in the address bar
  • The Home and Fast Forward buttons now optional
  • New "tab fold" attention state - no more blue blob
  • New window gradient for OS X
Linux/FreeBSD known issue
  • The text in the status bar may be invisible in dark themes

Everything is beautiful, but please give to us possibility to change (with the effect) "Chrome Integration Drag Area Maximized" value to 0 (in Windows, at least). It is so comfortable, you can just drag pointer to the top and only align in horizontal dimension.

You can open it with the "down"-key on your keyboard.

Looks boring. It´s too light and soft. I don´t like it confused
Please, try something modern. This is only variation on the chrome.

At first I thought it was just my customized skin. I'm sure it's just an oversight...I hope.

You can still access it by pressing Down on your keyboard.

I know but I don't always want to use the keyboard and even if that's not an issue it now takes one more step to get to the menu than before.

Still exists the following interface bugs:
- Glitches of Closed Tabs icon in case of Icons Size in settings is not equal to 100% (DSK-333993)
- The height of search fields placed into Bookmarks Bar is too small (DSK-333389)
- After checking/unchecking custom style not all the elements on the page are become to original state (DSK-308343)

metude Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:32:27 AM

I liked new design inspite of many user.

Some align issues with buttons which is added bottom of panel. http://prntscr.com/248zo

And in this build Ctrl+Enter doesn't working.

vlevi Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:33:39 AM

I hope you will not forget the email client part. There are still colored email folder. And it look to me, that the email toolbar works a bit different. In the browser toolbar, there is a light border around the buttons if I hover with mouse, but in email, it is missing.
And the other thing, please do something with that thick blue border on speeddial icons. It is Ok, if you have only 4-6 speedials, but it is to thick to 20-25 speeddials. I think, half of the thickness is more than enougn. For the blue color, I recommend using the color scheme, that the I've chosen. For example, sand.

OPERATORGÖKTÜRK Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:37:35 AM

O MENÜ,zoom are cool,I like .But I don t like the other buttons. And change the speed dial view.I thıng it must be cooliris or safari top sites. Not same. must be original

d_A_yday-x Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:39:43 AM

nice!
maybe addressbar border should be thinner too?

and in addition to these interface changes, it could be useful to see some more text at the spacious top margin: a title of page to the right of menu button smile just as it is in case of "show menu bar" =)

Dan Alexandrudantesoft Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:40:16 AM

Love the "tab fold".

I want visit URL i visited before from address bar,How can i do that? Where is pull-down menu of address bar?

r13raphweng Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:45:24 AM

First of all: Wonderful skin, beautiful colors, very intuitive and all in all a big leap forward.

Now the "criticism":

The pop-up (which appears when when typing a keyword or URL) looks messed up - as it stems from older versions. The "headlines" need to be more seperated, the on-hover-background for links in this pop-up was better in 10.5 and higher.

In the address-bar, the blue progress-bar still looks like in version 9 or so (with this skin, it doesn't go so well anymore).

The Opera menu should be in the window title even when the tab bar is placed to the left/right.

Or do they? A couple of years ago, nobody, even in the IT community, knew what 'cloud' had to do with computing, and now, all of sudden, it's the buzzword of the year. Quite frankly, looking at the new icon alone, I wouldn't have guessed it had something to do with sync. On the other hand, the two swirling arrows have been associated with data synchronization for ages, and make a perfectly logical choice for Opera Link.

Opera, please, don't just follow the crowd and think a little! Just because Apple has a new favorite word doesn't mean that everyone has to blindly submit to that.

Apart from that...
I like the new skin and the overall styling, but I'd also agree with some of the much-repeated points of criticism here. For starters, monochrome icons are a usability setback. I know they tend to come in and out of fashion every once in a while, but let's not forget color is an important part of human visual perception. Speaking for myself, my eyesight isn't all that great, and colored icons make navigation much easier, because they don't force me to focus on fine details, but are intuitive and easy to find.

Also: +1 for
- address bar padding vs. tabs that are too short (makes tab switching harder)
- Opera button with embedded text (should be removable)
- problematic layout when tab bar is set to vertical on the side of the screen - the menu button just shifts to an awkward positions and the top of the windows is dead space

Petruspetrus Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:47:50 AM

CMD + click to open a link in a background tab opens two background tabs on OSX.

I know what you mean...it should only be a little "workaround". But a little (!) arrow shouldn't be such a problem. We'll see...

ClashCityRockerclashcityrocker Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:53:27 AM

Opera button does not work with Images only....

I also had some skin weirdness ("ghost tabs") on first launch, I had to reset the appearance back.

Indeed. But that breaks my behavior, as I have to take hand from mouse to click down arrow at my keyboard.

BTW: Is this restyle your work? smile

LisandreL Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:57:17 AM

Nice, but some icons should be improved.
Opera Link button is totally understandable. It should be cycling arrows (as a common symbol of synchronisation), but the new icon looks like the poo-poo (or it meaned to be a cloud?) - it is not a symbol of synchronisation.
Differ "show all pictures" and "show cashed pictures" icons with only a color is not a smart idea too.

also the buttons at the top of the mailpanel don't have any hover or something like that.

cliche37 Wednesday, June 22, 2011 12:04:37 PM

I've been waiting for a GUI update! But I have some immediate complaints with this one:

1. Tabs feel smaller than in the last release which makes absolutely no sense considering the page real estate is the same.
2. Some buttons should be a little bit bigger. Such as the close button icon.
3. The lack of a background for the new tab button seems awkward.
4. There should be the ability to change the O Menu button to just say "Menu" instead of "Opera Next"
5. When you go to Help > Check for Updates, the animated loading icon in the dialog box is pixelated/blurry.
6. When enabling the "Show Menu bar" option in Vista, you cannot see the menu text.
7. It looks too similar to another browser I know now...

Those are the only problems I see so far. The O Menu looks disproportionate to the tabs in this GUI, but that isn't so big a deal.

Sujit IslamSujiti Wednesday, June 22, 2011 12:06:46 PM

To be honest I like to old one better a it is a lot more sophisticated and that this one look too much like chrome.

Simply enough... I just "can't live" without having the ability to change tabs while mouse pointer is on top-edge.

+1. They MUST fix it asap! I don't understand why it doesn't work... Since I did the change through about:config! I don't say make it default! Just while the option is there...

Opera is obsessed with the word"fastest"..everything is fast

this is what i have noticed.

1)Installation is Fast
2)Page Loading is Superfast
3)Benchmark in some aspects is really fast
4)Built In features yet still fast(without HWA yet)
5)INTERFACE is fast

also, when the interface is lightweight..i notice increase page loading in some sites..hell, even when turbo is on still faster

try this skin and read the description from the author

Where the arrow in the drop-down menu addressbar?

vlevi Wednesday, June 22, 2011 12:22:00 PM

Can you do something with the Google IMAP protocol? For example, Mozilla Thunderbird handles IMAP much better.

I hope, nobody wants to use the menu bar :

The icons look better but have become very small, I think if they were bigger would be easier to click on them.

I think it's more accurate to say that Thunderbird handles Gmail's disgustingly broken and sorry excuse for an IMAP implementation.

Love it!! happy

But I do agree that address bar need to be thiner, tab height should be consistent between normal and pinned, and the ability to remove the text on menu button.

90% of the time, I surf by history. This change means that i have to switch between keyboard and mouse all the time.
Very annoying and makes the browser almost unusable for me. Please make it at least optional.

CaseCase1 Wednesday, June 22, 2011 12:34:31 PM

Shrinking the already quite thin menu button when setting icons to less than 100% size is a bad idea in my opinion. Even at 100% (which I really don't like, the address bar has too thick margins around the input fields that way and also some of the icons can get pretty big) the menu button is just only about half the height of the address bar (which is quite chunky at 100%, needlessly so, in my opinion).

NEOAethyr Wednesday, June 22, 2011 12:35:44 PM

The ONLY diff I noticed was that the check box's were a slightly diff color...
Otherwise it looks exactly the same other then a few layout fixes.
It's all cool though with me.

Edit:
Oh sh!t...
The addy drop down is gone.
I guess that's ok because I never liked it to begin with but it will take some time to get used to that's for sure.

First: when can we sync skins/appearances, extensions, and configs through Opera Link? It'd be a great feature to install YOUR UNIQUE browser everywhere only by typing your Link datas in setup. smile

About the new skin:
1. Panels opened looks REALLY UGLY! It'd be better to open it under the address bar, I think.
2. Opera button is annoying as I cannot remove text, as earlier.
3. Too thin tab bar (especially compared to the address bar).

That's all for now.
But anyways, really nice skin, really good build! (As the Next channel appeared, I stopped using dev builds, but now, I think I come back!)
Go on like this! Congrats!

Thanks for your comment, Oleg. I know about the down arrow, it's just that I'd prefer the dropdown. I don't access it all that often so, yeah, I can live with that.

Now if there was just a way to get rid of the Widget and RSS icons. I've never been able to find a way to customize them out of existence.

Why do you insist on transparency of status bar in Windows Native skin? In Opera standard skin you get it right - status bar is not transparent.
