Introducing Opera 12 alpha

, , , , ,

The last months Opera 12 snapshots have received two major updates of its JavaScript engine, Carakan, which make it more memory efficient and fully ECMAScript 5.1 compliant. Last week the new HTML 5 parser Ragnarök was added. Today Opera 12 alpha introduces another major technological milestone: full hardware acceleration with WebGL.

WebGL
WebGL in combination with new ECMAscript features like type arrarys makes it possible to develop and run games with high quality graphics in your browser. To demonstrate the possibilities of these new technologies Opera has ported the game Emberwind to HTML5. There are several other demos like Formula 1 and Don't click.

Full hardware acceleration
Opera aims to give the best possible performance for all users. This is why we already have a "software accelerated" backend in Vega. However with the new hardware accelerated backend Opera will draw the whole user interface using the GPU, not just specific elements of the webpage like the canvas element. This will offload the CPU significantly and make it possible to accelerate the rendering of all webpages. On systems with outdated drivers or buggy graphics cards, Opera will fallback to the heavily optimized Vega software rendering engine.

Currently hardware acceleration is in an alpha stage and only uses an OpenGL backend. We would like to get your feedback about how well it works for you. Opera 12 alpha works best with modern graphics cards and up to date drivers. In future snapshot we'll add support for DirectX and more graphics cards. Be aware that testing Opera 12 alpha can trigger bugs in your graphics card and in worst case blue screen your computer.faint scared

Themes
Opera 12 makes it easier than ever to personalize your browser. It's now possible to create simple lightweight themes based on a nice photos or other graphics. It's also easier to install and try out new and existing themes (previously called skins). Try them out here! They are currently only available for Windows and Mac (more information for Linux/FreeBSD users).

Check out what's new in Opera 12 alpha and have fun test driving Opera 12 alpha! knight

WARNING: This is an Opera 12.00 Alpha build: It is not feature complete and may have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. If you are uncomfortable with this, please use the latest stable Opera instead.

Me too. Win7 X86. HWA turned off, WebGL on. This "tailing" effect is worse than in prior snapshots.

This is where the new on-demand activation comes in handy. You'll see similar activation button inside the address bar now. Clicking it will work.
(Clicking big activation button inside the page doesn't work because it's overlayed by invisible element.)

Opera is crashing on logout from ipko.pl banking system. IMO issue is related with js.

Opera Next Alpha 12.00 build 1105 under windows 7 x64 sp1 enterprise and ubuntu 11.10 amd64. This problem doesn't exist in opera 11.xx and previous, pre-alpha opera next builds.

On boingboing.net, I've had some troubles with the emedded youtube and vimeo videos. When scrolling down past a video the video sometimes sticks at the top of the sceen (50-200 px in). Then it is unstuck when scrolling up past the same video again. But then the video catches on the bottom of the screen instead.

I am also having trouble with a youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3Oe7Q8OCm5I). The sound isn't working. It is working in Opera 11.51 and in the latest Chrome.

Overall I enjoy the new rendering method on windows. Deleting hundreds of feeds from the mail client also feels a lot faster.

We might have some memory leaks as private bytes keep rising with prolonged usage. For example:
Restart > 80-tab session restored == 1,26GB > Opening closing a lot of tabs > same 80 tabs remaining == 1,94GB

I do not care about ram usage and my only concern is that the 32bit address space allocated to Opera will run out. I'm willing to allocate up to 8GB to this browser alone *when* it goes x64 if that means I'll get the same responsiveness with double the tabs.

I am using Window Blinds v7.2.305. The Windows border (title bar, left, right & bottom edges) are not displayed correctly when hardware acceleration is enabled. It's like they are beings displayed in a transparent 'classic' mode. They are OK if hardware acceleration is disabled. I am using a highly customized skin and everything else appears to paint correctly.

If I remember correctly, there was a similar problem when version 8 or 9 or 10 was released.

If you are under Windows :

Type opera:config in the address bar, then search for "Opera Product", and put 0 instead of 1. Save this setting and restart Opera.

Under Linux and OSX, it is not possible.

First of all congratulations on this release with HWA. coffee up wizard sherlock

Here are some observations. This new build surely loves RAM. Over time it will go over a 1 GB in my daily use where it never goes over 450 MB I guess.

I also had two blue screen type crashes according to Windows. First the screen would freeze and there after 30s it would reboot. In the BIOS routine I got the notification:

Hyper Transport synch flood error occurred on last boot. Push F1 to continue.

Back in Windows I get a Windows error report that a minidump has been saved. This has Evebnt ID 1001:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000124 (0x00000000, 0x876e1024, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: M:\Windows\Minidump\101511-22167-01.dmp. Report Id: 101511-22167-01.

In the logs I also see Event ID 20:

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Component: AMD Northbridge
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error
Processor ID: 0

The details view of this entry contains further information.

Runs pretty good on my machine (Radeon 5870 Graphics Card).
Just experienced a little bit of tearing and one crash in the first 24 hours of testing.

But this version definitely uses more memory than previous versions - almost 1.9GB with one open Tab:
http://oi56.tinypic.com/2r4o2z7.jpg

- after surfing around an hour or so - 3GB with one Tab:
http://i53.tinypic.com/3wh80.png

EDIT: Did some more testing:
... memory consumption seems to slowly increase until it reaches 3.4GB ...
... then Opera will crash yuck
Just after startup (with one Tab) memory consumption is around 220MB.

After I disabled hardware acceleration - things get back to normal too.

I have the same laptop with Windows XP and the latest drivers (266.58 for XP different than Vista) and a clean install of Opera. Ιt is not slower for me. I remember the browser being noticeably slower on the http://labs.opera.com/news/2011/02/28/]first" target="_blank">http://labs.opera.com/news/2011/02/28/]first" target="_blank">http://labs.opera.com/news/2011/02/28/]first" target="_blank">http://labs.opera.com/news/2011/02/28/]first preview with GPU hardware acceleration but now things seem to be better. Any specific site that gives you more problems?

After using the browser for most of the day it does become slow after a while and only a couple of tabs open, a restart of Opera fixes things for a while and then the problem appears again. Meanwhile on my desktop PC (HP xw6600, Windows Vista, NVidia FX 570 - 182.67 drivers) the browser has been running happily for hours now with about 15 tabs open and no restarts.

I deleted 3 files *. JSON file (firefox?) within the profile and the interface has returned to normal speed. Try it.

Those files are blocklists for problematic graphic cards and drivers as explained at the Supported graphics cards section here. Deleting them would probably just force GPU acceleration something you can do with about:config. I however tried deleting them anyway and the problem reappeared.

After updating from Opera-Next-12.00-1090 to Opera-Next-12.00-1105 and even through a fresh installation, this is what appears (see images below). I cannot access the url bar, see what I am typing, or load a web-page. It all either appears in blue, green, or white. Coincidentally, the opera menu, after a bit of random clicking in the top-left corner, had no affect, but the components within it, like Appearance, Preferences, are affected.

Maybe themes are so young that they do have some interesting bugs:
1. I can't make pagebar buttons to the topest px by editing "Margin Top=0" in [Pagebar Button Skin] in skin.ini. I mean, after I edited skin.ini in standard_skin.zip, doubleclicking the topest px can still create a new page instead of closing the page. I'm sure I have opened "Doubleclick to close tab". So, Maybe it's a bug.
2. I Use Win XP SP3. If I start Opera 12 alpha, the Opera window will cover the taskbar and be in the window-restore state, instead of in the window-maximize state.

I'm looking forward to Opera 12 Final with plenty of improvement, espscially stability and GPU! happy
