Introducing Opera 12 alpha

, , , , ,

The last months Opera 12 snapshots have received two major updates of its JavaScript engine, Carakan, which make it more memory efficient and fully ECMAScript 5.1 compliant. Last week the new HTML 5 parser Ragnarök was added. Today Opera 12 alpha introduces another major technological milestone: full hardware acceleration with WebGL.

WebGL
WebGL in combination with new ECMAscript features like type arrarys makes it possible to develop and run games with high quality graphics in your browser. To demonstrate the possibilities of these new technologies Opera has ported the game Emberwind to HTML5. There are several other demos like Formula 1 and Don't click.

Full hardware acceleration
Opera aims to give the best possible performance for all users. This is why we already have a "software accelerated" backend in Vega. However with the new hardware accelerated backend Opera will draw the whole user interface using the GPU, not just specific elements of the webpage like the canvas element. This will offload the CPU significantly and make it possible to accelerate the rendering of all webpages. On systems with outdated drivers or buggy graphics cards, Opera will fallback to the heavily optimized Vega software rendering engine.

Currently hardware acceleration is in an alpha stage and only uses an OpenGL backend. We would like to get your feedback about how well it works for you. Opera 12 alpha works best with modern graphics cards and up to date drivers. In future snapshot we'll add support for DirectX and more graphics cards. Be aware that testing Opera 12 alpha can trigger bugs in your graphics card and in worst case blue screen your computer.faint scared

Themes
Opera 12 makes it easier than ever to personalize your browser. It's now possible to create simple lightweight themes based on a nice photos or other graphics. It's also easier to install and try out new and existing themes (previously called skins). Try them out here! They are currently only available for Windows and Mac (more information for Linux/FreeBSD users).

Check out what's new in Opera 12 alpha and have fun test driving Opera 12 alpha! knight

WARNING: This is an Opera 12.00 Alpha build: It is not feature complete and may have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. If you are uncomfortable with this, please use the latest stable Opera instead.

Anyone notice how when you install certain speed dial extensions (e.g. clocks) with hardware acceleration enabled, Opera suffers from extreme lag? Without hardware acceleration though these extensions work just fine.

Try typing an address in that field. I get an instant crash at the first keystroke. I got the same behaviour in two different systems with Windows XP.

After doing a clean install (on Mac), Opera Next start loading the home page of the Opera. While the page is being loaded I click the button (+) to maximize the window at which point the program crashes.

Resizing the window also makes Opera crash.

Check this page - every reload is different number of rows!

Second - if page is not fully displayed then is not a small bug that "exists in every software". Opera is the only browser with that problem.

Except no one else here is experiencing this problem. I tested reloading that page multiple times in both Opera 11.51 and 12 alpha, and it loaded all 20,000 rows every single time.

I still using WinXP SP3, maybe that's why? I don't know why, but 2 or 3 latest beta versions of Opera (even fresh installed) works bad in this case in my computer and the same on other computers that I tested (all XP). And even few people report me the same bug. I do not why but for some reason, Opera stops loading that table until end (refreshing using CTRL+R but F5 works similar). Not always, only sometimes. Never happens before and never happens in other browsers. In case someone want to test:
http://www.up.xs.com.pl/testtable.php - 20000 rows
http://www.up.xs.com.pl/testtable2.php - 90000 rows
http://www.up.xs.com.pl/testtable3.php - 5000 rows

Refresh until you'll see a bug (if anyone can confirm).

Technical typo

tested using: http://www.useragentstring.com/

"Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/5.0; en)" Is the IE string, but there is no IE 9 for XP

also can't use Firefox 4 for the Firefox string as that is a dead version, 7 would be better for now

But websites do not use OS version to allow or disallow a version of IE to be used. To make it more clear-

A modern website only looks at this part of UA string to sniff an old version of IE (IE 6 for example) from being used-

Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Trident/5.0; en)

It ignores the platform part.

So masking as IE 9 works on Windows XP too. IE 8 cannot be used for masking as more and more websites will drop support for IE 8 once HTML5 is supported on a significant level in all browsers.

I cant agree with this because 12,5mb is not a big file!

try this:
http://get.geo.opera.com/pub/.custom/campaign/labs/reader/Opera_Mobile_11.5_Android_reader.apk

this file is +-12,5mb and Opera 12.00 alpha crash too.. So problem is not with big files but I am not a develop and I dont know what is wrong..
(here is Opera 12.00 alpha installed as portable-USB version on PC with this configueation: w7 x64,nvidia gts 250 with newest drivers,HWA and webgl are sets to "2" so enabled..)

No, I'm actually using XP SP3 as well. I tried again just now (using the newer version with HWA fixes) and it still continues to load all rows for me. I reloaded the 90,000 row table several times, and the 20,000 and 5,000 row tables a number of times as well. All rows loaded for me each and every time. I even tried doing things like scrolling the page while it was loading to see if that had any effect.

The only things I could think of would be that perhaps it's some sort of network interruption on your end, where Opera decides the page must be finished loading, while the other browsers keep trying to continue loading it. Or maybe some anti-malware software or plugin is interfering with the page load. Maybe try going into Advanced -> Network and adjusting the max connection settings there to see if that has any effect.

This is the first version where I started to notice that when I click a link in the speed dial screen it opens a brand new tab instead of reusing the speed dial tab. Is this a new setting, because I'd rather it reused the speed dial tab so I don't have to close it.
