Hardware acceleration fixes

This is the first snapshot after Opera 12 Alpha. A big thank you goes out to everyone who joined us on the far side of software development and installed the Alpha release of Opera 12. Your feedback has been invaluable.

When it comes to hardware acceleration, we're currently in a state of code cleanup and optimization, so there will not be many big changes coming in this area in the next weeks. This builds has a couple of very important fixes though, first among them is plugging a big memory leak on Windows.

Anyone running Opera 12 Alpha are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the build linked below.

  • Code cleanup and optimizations
  • Plugged a huge memory leak on Windows, and a smaller one on Mac
  • Several updates to blocklists. Note that many changes are continuously pushed through autoupdate, so you probably have these changes already
  • - Blocking use of hardware acceleration on NVIDIA Quadro NVS (bad performance)
  • - Blocking use of hardware acceleration on NVIDIA FX/PCX series (buggy driver version detection prevented blocking of the too old driver)
  • - Blocking use of 3D hardware acceleration (WebGL) on Intel GMA 3000 (bad performance)
  • - Added fallback rule for unknown chipsets on Windows as well, should block things like VMWare
  • Fixed ex value parsing on Mac, fixes many odd errors where things go missing on websites like reddit
  • Made "Minimal restart" in crashlog UI work again
  • Improved flash rendering on Mac
  • Fixed crash when closing tabs with "dimmed" dialogs
WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

With Hardware Acceleration enabled my computer (GPU ?) is making strange sounds when watching a live stream from http://www.own3d.tv (not full screen).

If i disable Hardware Acceleration the sounds go away.

With other browsers (HA enabled) there are no sounds.

Configuration:
MB: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 v1.1
CPU: Q6600 B3
GPU: Gigabyte 470 GTX

OS: Windows 7 x64 SP1
Flash: 11.0.1.152
GPU Driver: 285.62

I have tried with the 2 latest GPU driver versions (280.26, 285.62) and no change, the strange sounds are still there.

The fonts are going outside of the teletext, the text is cut-off. With Google Chrome is all ok.

A quick, but serious note.
Themes didn't work for me at all, maybe too older system, but that's what Opera can excel at.
So, can we also have skins, just keep them on the menu too please, and then the ease of personalization remains.
Thanks for listening ( & which other browser would you be able to add comments like this, eh?)

What is the status of test262?
test262 is not yet complete. It is still undergoing active development. Some portions of the ES5 specification have very complete test coverage while other portions of the specification have only partial test coverage. Some tests may be invalid or may yield false positive or false negative results. A perfect passing score on test262 does not guarantee that a JavaScript implementation perfectly supports ES5. Because tests are being actively added and modified, tests results from different days or times may not be directly comparable

Clearly nothing, as other browsers have hundreds, if not thousands of failures....

Also a few of those tests have been found to be wrong or ambigious, are are due for removal. Why fix opera to pass a broken test? That's insane.

This 11 failures in Test 262 topic is going way over the limit now. This blog really needs very strict moderation.
Scoring 100% on a test that is under development is NOT IMPORTANT. Once the test is finalized or maybe sometime before that, Opera team will definitely correct Opera to pass the failed tests.

Not clearly the topic now. It's not good to tease other browsers when Opera have done something before them. Before Opera added ECMAScript 5.1 support, as per my knowledge nobody teased Opera that Opera has 3000+ failures while other browsers have less than 500 failures.

ajthorva Thursday, October 27, 2011 10:15:35 AM

Works on Lenovo IdeaPad S10e with Ubuntu 11.04. Fast initially, then hogged the CPU for 3-4 minutes on the my opera login page, then fast again (occationally hogs the CPU and becomes unresponsive). Has printed "i915_program_error: Exceeded max nr indirect texture lookups (17 out of 4)" into terminal. Opera Unite doesn't work.

those browsers claim to support ecma 5.1, opera never supported it until 12, hence it's previous low scores

Please go to http://wizard.ae.krakow.pl/~jb/qaop/js/ with Opera.
Then try to open a file by clicking the open button.
You will see that nothing happens!

If you try the same with Firefox or Chrome, the open file dialog pops up as it should.

So Opera fails at opening files sad Not good for an HTML5 browser...

Facebook is really slow with opera.
If I scroll down/up on the page, it takes a few seconds before it happens.
And, facebook also stop responding when I got a new message in chat og something other happens there.

I must have mistook with Opera 11.52, which is broken on that issue.

Just upgraded my nVIDIA driver to the latest version (285.26) and so far I'm not experiencing Opera not starting up with hardware acceleration acceleration and scrolling on many sites seems faster. Still a bit laggy though.

I updated my nvidia graphic driver from 280.26 to 285.62. Opera crashes when i try to start Opera with HWA. With disabled HWA Opera starts normal.

I may be mistaken, but isn't that what's expected? On the "Sinclair Research Ltd." screen, I was able to execute these commands:
LET i = 10<return>
LET j = 22<return>
LET k = i + j<return>
PRINT k
which printed 32! (When you press the "L" key, the word "LET" appears on the screen; when you press "P", "PRINT" appears.) So, I guess this is an emulator of some computer. The name "Sinclair" rings a bell, but I'm not sure at all.

Unfortunately that's not a bug but a "feature"...

KlausMuller Friday, October 28, 2011 9:09:19 AM

@Day

I found out the reason, its the system-wide-fontsize (150%). With 100% is all ok, but other browsers dont care with 150% and there it works with it.

This is very subjective on my part, but I find the last two 12.00 builds to have very serious performance issues. More often than not page scrolling is even lagging. I also don't see much of a difference with hardware acceleration turned on or off in terms of general browser performance.
