Smarter address field suggestions

We have already introduced address field search suggestions powered by our partners Google (default), Bing, Яндекс (Yandex), and Wikipedia (English only). Now we want our own address field suggestions to meet the same high quality standards as the ones provided by our partners for your bookmarks and history entries.

In our old system; everything including bookmarks was matched against page URL, title, or page content and then ordered in one giant list sorted by last visited time.

The new system assigns a score to each suggestion based on more factors than just the last visited time. For example, we prioritize your bookmarks, the position in the URL where we find a match, and the number of times we get a match on the page.

We are not done yet, and will work on integrating Speed Dials and further improve the scoring system.

What do you think about the new results in the address field? Are we getting you to where you wanted to go?

If you already know exactly where you want to go and don’t care too much about the above improvements; then you will certainly appreciate that we’ve also worked on getting you on your way faster. (Nice segue, huh?) Start-up times and session handling should be snappier in this build. We’ve ironed out a bunch of smaller issues that we think will make a big difference.

PS: There are some other treasures in the change log as well. pirate

Welcome back Wahoo! At last!!! party yes

Though I cannot spy any differences concerning my search results.
It isn't very handy having to skip all those search-suggestions first to get to the results that really matter.
And it still looks like a big non-structured list with missing icons down

Sometimes I still have horizontal lines in images! I think it happens when the pictures are a kind of jerkily loaded.

Is this maybe a config or setup problem? Thanx!

I really hope that the high cpu usage during media-playback (for example WebM) will be solved in 12.00 final.
Never the less a pretty stable build

Martin RapavýAntikapitalista Friday, January 27, 2012 12:25:16 PM

Yeah, I hope that you will not stop there but proceed to implement autocompletion for forms.
So, when working on the new scoring system, please try in it your development offices first; it may help you adjust your priorities.
Namely: the above-mentioned feature has been clamoured for by Opera users for years, unlike some new tinkering with Speed Dial, about which there has been hardly a single word.
(And no, do not keep telling us about "privacy concerns", as they have already been addressed by introducing "private tabs".)

Honestly, the way 11.52 handles address field completion seems to be more accurate and practical than how 11.61 and the current Wahoo buid handle it. How about a test build that allows the user to toggle the address field suggestion between 11.52's method and the currently developed method? At least the end-users will be able to compare the results side-by-side and communicate to the developers which they prefer, how effective each one is, and what improvements could be made.

As you know, there is a thread in the forums about this very issue of the address bar beyond 11.52. Not only is the sorting of entries argued against, but also the way in which 11.60+ merges all results without any clear distinction between bookmarks, history, and search suggestions.

After I tested this latest build, here is an example of what I mean. Let's say I start typing "gmail" into the address field:

With 11.52, the first result is my bookmark of Gmail, clearly defined above the history entries, which follow below. With the history results, towards the top I have articles about Gmail. Near the bottom, I have irrelevant results for Google Image searches. Everything is organized distinctively, the entries are easy to click on (double-lined), they are readable (longer URLs and page titles), and they have favicons (which makes selection much, much easier than without favicons.)

With this build (12.00-1256), the first result is a search for "gmail". The following results are a mixture of history items and my bookmark, however, the history items have irrelevant entries towards the top, without *ANY* indication that the term "gmail" is found in them. The URLs are cut off, as are the page titles! To make matters worse, there are no favicons for quick identification, as was the case with 11.52.

Have you been trying to match your bookmarks? Especially bookmarks with nick name should be positioned higher in the list. You can turn off suggestions if you find them annoying.

I did not include the link in my previous comment, since I'm not sure if it will get my entire post deleted.

This specific post does an excellent job of demonstrating why the single-line double-column display (which cuts URLs and page titles) is a usability hindrance: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/findpost.pl?id=11150382

As for the suggestions -- I know that you are not to keen on options nowadays (tab stacking :/ ) but can we have an option to choose the sorting? I would love to see results in following order: bookmarks -> history -> search suggestions?

Windows 7 x32, upgrading from previous (1191) 12.00 build – does not work at all. After installing, Opera tries to start, shows Speed Dial for a second and then crashes. Restarting with Unite and Extensions disabled changes nothing, Opera still crashes.
Downgraded to 1191, works fine for now.

That would be great. Perhaps a choice between "default" (current method) and "custom" which allows the user to override how the results are sorted, priotizing bookmarks over history over search suggestions, for example.

Google+ has been crashing Opera 12.0 for a long time on both my work and my home computers. I run Fedora 16 (64 bit) + KDE on both. The work computer is all Intel (not my choice) and the home one is all AMD. And this build is very consistent with the old builds, crashing after a few seconds after opening my Google+ account.

We do not make any commitments to putting features released as Labs releases in the final product. We most certainly do not commit to a time frame. With that said: 64-bit will most likely happen when we are ready for it. You’ll just have to keep an eye on the Desktop Team blog like the rest.

I have the same thing. My default page zoom is 150%. I don't know if that changes something...

Also, many Youtube videos pause automatically before the end and it's getting really annoying. Basically, the only way to watch the end is to change the resolution.

Thansk for new build... scrolling seems smoother than before on certain sites, HW works ok but when can we see OOPP making an appearance in Opera Next ??

NoFanboyNofanboy Friday, January 27, 2012 2:00:45 PM

Unfortunately this build is the worst ever regarding the ancient, never-fixed scrolling/tool-tip bug appearing on many computers. Tested on 3 Atom-based Windows-XP and Windows-7 boxes (various Asus EEEPCs, Foxconn RS233, no HWA), all the same. Steps to reproduce:

1. Disable the status bar in Opera so that links are displayed as tool tips when hovering on them with the mouse pointer.

2. Go to e.g. www.spiegel.de or www.heise.de (some other sites show the same effect, but these are the worst).

3. Hold the mouse over a link so that a toop tip with the URL (and often also a title) appears.

4. Either press the "cursor down" key, or scroll a bit down using the mouse wheel.

Effect: The screen area where the tool tip was is completely garbled. Not a single other browser shows this garbage. I have tried many configuration items (like soft scrolling off or on, Javascript off or on), nothing helps.
