Addressbar polishing

,

Please welcome focus-oriented URL shortening and the long expected optional favicons in the address field drop-down.

Favicons are off by default, but you can turn them on in the advanced configurations. Remember to save your setting before closing the page. You must also need to restart the browser for it to take effect.

We are trying to utilize the available space in the address bar space as best as possible. To this end, we’ve focused on optimizing what parts of the URL is displayed in the drop-down at different widths. Note in the screenshots below how different levels of the URL is collapsed as the drop-down gets narrower. You should see the most important information—the domain for security and origin, and the document title—in all sizes.

For comparison, here is a screenshot of how it looked in the previous snapshot. You’ll see how important information was lost; in sharp contrast to the refocused address field we’ve introduced now.

The excellent feedback we’ve gotten from the community is our greatest motivator. Keep the good feedback coming!

Known issues
  • DSK-358417 (Extension preferences and localStorage lost on upgrade)

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Do not think many users were expecting this one on a Saturday. thank you for your hard work devs testing smile

Saturday snapshot surprise!

The Oslo Desktop Team is going on a team building trip next week, so we thought it was important to get the latest stuff out so you guys could get some time to test it properly while we go play in the snow!

setsutekh Saturday, March 3, 2012 2:04:15 PM

Your link is faulty, try opera:config#Show%20favicons

Did you consider adding a simple à-la-chrome-animation to the dropdown?

Enjoy! think you are all doing a great job with 11.62 & 12. I for one am very patient and just love using Opera browser.

My tab stacks unstack themselves upon restarting Opera (resuming last session). Anybody else?

alekksander Saturday, March 3, 2012 2:08:03 PM

thanks. i was hoping for a little surprise today! this looks very promising. will test!

When https://addons.opera.com/themes/ will get started?

I think actual page tab text should be slightly bold, so it's easier to spot.

Disabling "Show thumbnails when hovering tabs" - doesn't work on tab stack - is it intended?

"Favicons are off by default"
Why is that? it looks fine, and helps with finding what You need much quicker.

I’ve already raised the issue with our designers. It’s not friendly for regular folks who haven’t got perfect eyesight and designer-calibrated-screens.

Thank you!! just installation!!up

MichałEmdek Saturday, March 3, 2012 2:35:13 PM

Great surprise! yikes
Thanks, guys!

I want to search in the addressbar was only among the addresses of sites. how do I get it?
If I need a search engine, I go on Google or Yandex. When I enter the website address into the address bar, I expect to find only among the addresses.
where it is configured?

Thumbnails when hovering are fine here. Not confirmed. Windows 7 32 bit.

QuHno Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:01:12 PM

Favicons: check.

WebGL does not crash my video driver: check
(not mentioned in the changelog, but something has changed)

webGL working with -pd option: no

Some other pet bugs: check.

All in all: Good work. up

Here is a workaround http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1318312

minho Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:09:04 PM

How can I see if an address is bookmark or an history item when I begin write in address field? Some bookmarks I can identify by star icon but other bookmarks/history show favicon.

Ralf BeckebansRabe85 Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:10:29 PM

The favicon works if i type in something, but not if i click on the drop down button. There is only the loupe in front of each line and no other (fav)icon.

Thank you so much! Now I can start testing it.
Actually this workaround could be easily done as the installer custom step. I don't understand why it wasn't.

Satan D. Lucifersupertrol Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:14:06 PM

@opera team

do you have plans to make this feature in the final version of 12?

http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/opera-reader-a-new-way-to-read-the-web/

yes the Opera Reader

This is an important and very innovative way to browse the web(clearly opera really innovates)

Other browsers didnt come out with this idea only opera did.

MichałEmdek Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:15:45 PM

Restart wasn't required to make favicons show up in address field dropdown but was required to make them show up in completion mode.

Thanks again for restoring them. :-)

minho Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:22:17 PM

DSK-340772 (Control–clicking search bar suggestions opens two tabs in background)
Opera Team, can you do Opera keep menu opened when us use ctrl-clocking please?

Vadimmve88 Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:23:02 PM

Opera freezes after uploading any image to postimage.org. Totally unresponsive.

Viewyviewy21 Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:26:09 PM

Linux: Go to page dialog doesn't have drop down addresses even though opera:config#Show%20Dropdown%20Button%20In%20Addressfield is enabled. Can someone confirm if this is a regression or existing bug? I remember it working on Windows

Shane Bundyoperabaker Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:28:59 PM

Thanks for the Saturday snapshot and the runtime fixes! yes

But I'm sad because the DSK-357882 fix isn't in Wahoo yet. sad

Martin KadlecBS-Harou Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:42:56 PM

Can you put the "show favicons" option to address bar badge context menu?

Ti-bsd Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:56:24 PM

Cool!

ahmadamaj Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:58:24 PM

I just had a great idea. Why don't you place the title of the page in the address bar when the page finishes loading? then when you press on the address bar the URL appears? this way you can also remove the top bar and save some more screen space.

Ayrton Nádgelayrtonnadgel92 Saturday, March 3, 2012 3:59:27 PM

highstream Saturday, March 3, 2012 4:09:33 PM

Just so it's not missed, the following error I posted late last night with the last build continues with this:

At altrec.com, place item in cart, go to cart (checkout) and get JavaScript error message:

Error in mediation creation
GiftCertPayload
cannot convert 'inheritingClass' to object

Seems to throw up about four of these boxes, then clears and page links go unresponsive. Doesn't happen with latest 11.62 build.

This is happening for about 3 builds for me. I reported it as DSK-358217 two builds ago wink

Deathamns Saturday, March 3, 2012 4:12:15 PM

Selleck's shadow (a few problems listed)

Also the Ctrl+Space shortcut opens a new tab when invoked on Speed dial, however clicking the Home button loads the page to the current tab.

I guess, this is exactly the same issue, which I wanted to point out here

ricksper Saturday, March 3, 2012 4:17:45 PM

Opera icon(s) taskbar O menu button, etc is using red icon instead of silver.

blaxima Saturday, March 3, 2012 4:17:47 PM

Still crashes every time I try to print a page.

I've sent the crash report

EDIT. I'm trying to send the crash log but it just hangs (manual and automatic)

On the bright side, it seems that it populates all the pages before it crashes unlike 11.x which only prints the first page

IusedtobeOOlli91 Saturday, March 3, 2012 4:18:25 PM

Download dialogue overlayered by flash video on OSX http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/1215/flashx.png -

the area of the video stays white in other tabs after that (only closing the tab with the video helps)

Leher Malhotramalhotraleher Saturday, March 3, 2012 4:24:03 PM

Thanks for the favicons!

alirezasimkesh Saturday, March 3, 2012 4:25:49 PM

Just a quick question, how can i upgrade my opera to 12, rather than installing a separate one (which is done through opera next)?

Thanks!
