Addressbar polishing

,

Please welcome focus-oriented URL shortening and the long expected optional favicons in the address field drop-down.

Favicons are off by default, but you can turn them on in the advanced configurations. Remember to save your setting before closing the page. You must also need to restart the browser for it to take effect.

We are trying to utilize the available space in the address bar space as best as possible. To this end, we’ve focused on optimizing what parts of the URL is displayed in the drop-down at different widths. Note in the screenshots below how different levels of the URL is collapsed as the drop-down gets narrower. You should see the most important information—the domain for security and origin, and the document title—in all sizes.

For comparison, here is a screenshot of how it looked in the previous snapshot. You’ll see how important information was lost; in sharp contrast to the refocused address field we’ve introduced now.

The excellent feedback we’ve gotten from the community is our greatest motivator. Keep the good feedback coming!

Known issues
  • DSK-358417 (Extension preferences and localStorage lost on upgrade)

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Why are the favicons in address bar deactivated by default?

Also tab bar on the left or right side is still not usable because moving of tabs is broken there:
DSK-302804 - Tab moving behavior is back to Opera 9 style after restart
DSK-328466 - Moving tabs with old moving behavior often creates groups by accident
sad

Since the last build I'm getting huge memory leaks, up to the point I had to hard-reboot my machine because it completely froze. Is it a known issue or should I report it? Reverting to 1312 now.
I'm on openSUSE 12.1, 32-bit.

IusedtobeOOlli91 Saturday, March 3, 2012 4:51:54 PM

And there's still that awful bug on simfy.de (biggest German music streaming site). Just choose an album and play a track and scroll the site (up!) and the music controls will become completely white and unusable. You should really fix this (I guess this one is easy to fix) because this is a real problem for a bigger group of German users, a use-blocker. bigsmile

Keep up the great fixes and improvements cheers!

This is happening for about 3 builds for me. I reported it as DSK-358217 two builds ago wink

Aha! Thanks for the bug report then.

Kamaleshkamalesh Saturday, March 3, 2012 5:03:05 PM

Great work...nice refinement with the favicons; +99 on making it default.

The dropdown width mgmt is a good improvement, but please consider making the dropdown stretch to the right-edge of the browser window (I have tabs-on-the-left). I've added some extension buttons and the window zoom widget and the dropdown leaves all that space unused.

Also, 1-, 2-letter keywords are not listing in the new dropdown. These are highlighted in v11.6x. Hope this is retained as we get closer to final.

Have a great team outing! (No somersaults and hotdogging off fjord crevasses, please.) wink

EDIT: REALLY fast rendering in Wahoo!

-Seriously? I thought DSK-357357 was for that. Guess not.

-I don't think the known issue "(Extension preferences and localStorage lost on upgrade)" applies to this build, since I didn't have that problem this time. At the very least, it's not as bad.

-I'm not getting anything after the URLs (i.e. titles) in the drop-down field, even if I try visiting the same sites as in the screenshot, like Tom's Hardware. Using the standard skin, so it's puzzling. Enabling the icons works, at least.

-Speaking of which, I don't see why the drop-down icons aren't on by default. I also don't see why we took a 6-month(?) detour of having a half-inch of dead space on the left side of the drop-down area. What was the idea behind that?

Win7 x64, can anyone confirm?

The addressbar search history is broken.

Only show the previous searches if they're in the top three

Joel Spadinspadija Saturday, March 3, 2012 6:02:18 PM

You fixed DSK-340349? yes

A few bar problems with dragging tabs off the tab bar remain though (and you've created a few new ones):
  • You cannot drop a tab over the new tab button or the area to the right of it. You must drop a tab in the space between the rightmost tab and the new tab button to move it all the way to the right.
  • If a tab is part of an expanded stack, you cannot drop a tab to its right. The drop indicator appears, but the tab moves to the left of the stack rather than its right.
  • Create two stacks. Collapse both of them. Drag the top tab from one stack off the tab bar and drop it on the other stack. This stack is now collapsed, but has two tabs in it. It also doesn't work correctly. If you then expand and collapse the broken stack, then drag it around, Opera freezes.
  • Create two stacks. Expand at least one of them. Drag a tab from one stack off the tab bar and drop it into an expanded stack. One of the tabs in the expanded stack disappears (the dropped tab appears to replace it) and Opera crashes when you try to do just about anything to the broken stack.

This build and also the current stable are very CPU heavy here on Mac OS 10.5.8, especially when scrolling. This results in scrolling quickly getting choppy and the browser unresponsive.

It works fine if "Reuse current tab" is enabled. But when it's disabled Ctrl+Space opens a new tab, Home button uses the actual Speed dial tab.

The addressbar still doesn't work out for me :-(
I visit "ebay.de" and "ebay.com" frequently and when I type "eb" into the addressbar, ebay already shows up for the first few links. But unfortunately it's not the main pages "http://www.ebay.de or com" but some sub-pages that I'm not interested in. I remember some time ago the top level of a domain was first on the list!
Now Opera proposes "ebay.de" directly in the addressbar immediately, but for "ebay.com" to show up on the adressbar popup list I have to type "ebay.". This is very irritating with other pages as well.

Am I the only one who has the impression that a lot of things are getting "un-improved" with every release?
Oh, and I know that I sound like an ass right now devil but ... Opera is, was and always will be the best browser out there! flirt

Although it got a bit better with this build, using Youtube still remains very painful on Ubuntu. Switching hardware acceleration on or off changes this a little bit, but long freezes are still quite usual - switching to higher resolution video in Youtube makes things even worse.

using Flash plugin 11.2.202.221 and Ubuntu 11.10 64bit

But why make it optional and new users would be oblivious for such a great feature?left

Just when I thought it was stable that blasted pure virtual call error came up. cry
Does this just affect Opera Next or do the 11.62 snapshots get it too? I forget. p

I'm on build 1324 of 11.62 and it does not happen on that copy. Just on the 12.00 Next editions. Hopefully R6025 will be fixed soon. I think got both 6026 and 6025 crashes testing the previous build.

Witold Barylukmovax Saturday, March 3, 2012 9:39:28 PM

Nice, thanks for work on address bar! Maybe I will go back to opera, now, because previous 12.x was sadly usless due monochromatic and favicon-less addressbar.

Still address bar is far from perfect. Interaction with search sugesstions is problematic, they load after some delay (because they are loaded from network), and it makes everything jump around. I would rather want to disable search sugesstions personally in address bar, but leave it enabled in search bar.

Please show us how it compares to previous previous design - two lines, from 11.x versions.

P2O2 Saturday, March 3, 2012 10:17:55 PM

Images flicker as usual. Tragic. It was "implemented" in 1318 version.

I had to reinstall 1312.

We are going for an minimalistic approach where less is more. Power-users, like yourselves, might disagree; which is why we introduced this option.

If you applied the work-around suggestion in the previous snapshot (reinstall or newly installed extensions) will work fine until we fix the actual cause, when any newly installed extension will stop working. So still listed in the known issues section.

When i open a link with "open with long-click" extension, it's opening left of the browser.

I have never seen this. It might be a XP problem maybe. Hard to tell as none of you said what OS you're at. I'm running Win7, x64 myself.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It used to be Password Mgr would ask again to save a new password if the first attempt turned out to be incorrect. I haven't seen that for at least two builds now.

Running a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x86) with no extensions and a clean profile.
I never got it at first but I hovered over a tab and that's when I lost my runtime error virginity in Opera. lol

Ok, then the next question is; does it only happen on x86 builds or are they present in x64 as well?

HWA enabled or disabled when it happens?

I'm just curious. wink
