Next address field adjustments

,

With this snapshot we have put a great deal of attention on searching via the address field.

Previously there were some complains that Opera fails on searching parts of URL. From now on it should be much easier to find your favorite pages simply by typing words in address field.

For example, lets say you have important friends on Facebook. Assume you have visited https://www.facebook.com/barackobama previously. You would expect to be able to find it by typing "barack" in the addressbar. Starting from this snapshot you will be able to see proper suggestions in the drop down for the address and title of secure pages.

Handling more than one word provided in the address bar was not handled really well previously, as it resulted in matching only page content. This meant that the URL and title was not taken into account when typing multiple words. This has now been improved upon as well, allowing you to better norrow down your searches.

Try visiting example http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/z77-express-virtu-mvp-benchmark,3174.html and than typing "virtu" or "virtu mvp" in addressbar, like so:

In addition, the ordering of items in the drop down has been improved to better promote nicely matching rows when multiple words have been provided.

Providing entries with patterns similar to "5.60 NOK in USD", "foo.bar baz" or "Info.plist" should now execute the default engine searching instead of trying to open the page, rather than resulting in the "Invalid URL" page being displayed. Though we realise that there is still a little bit more work to be done to improve this even further.

Finally the "Show more" button will not be visible now, if there is only one more row to be displayed wink

Note that if you don't like to see Google suggestions in front of other items in the dropdown, you might turn it off in the config (this is not a new thing).

Known Issues
  • DSK-358448 Runtime error 6025 pure virtual function call at startup Opera Next for some users
  • DSK-359770 Out of Process Plugins causing tab related freezes (mostly on startup)
  • HTML5 Drag and Drop is work in progress. Things like dragging to and from external applications may not work. Some existing demo sites may not work fully
  • HTML5test.com could freeze or show other problems on Mac
  • OTW-8246 Opera 64-bit on Windows not supported on Google+ (google plus)
  • DSK-361109 Address dropdown not populated when searching page content with multiple words

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Thanks, Testing the 32bit on Win7 now

Thanks. New snapshot ! Playtime begins.

Yay! Testing.

Thank you, but, please, don't forget fix queries like "site:com madonna". It should use default engine searching! (if this will not conflict with some other function...)

yeah new snapshot

"Providing entries with patterns similar to "5.60 NOK in USD", "foo.bar baz" or "Info.plist" should now execute the default engine searching instead of trying to open the page, rather than resulting in the "Invalid URL" page being displayed."

Seriously? It's fixed now? I was complaining about that for years! Thanks yikes yes

Just tested it - not working yet properly, if I enter into address field something like "SPFolder.Name" - it shows "Could not locate remote server" instead of jumping to Google and showing results for that SharePoint object. sad

And another issue - please use better application folder name for x64 builds - not "Program Files\Opera Next x64" But just "Program Files\Opera" or "Program Files\Opera Next"

Bill PBill_P Wednesday, April 11, 2012 12:48:51 PM

tab issue - in preferences the "when closing a tab" -> "activate the first tab opened from current tab" doesn't work, always opens next tab

anyone else?

bachokocho Wednesday, April 11, 2012 12:49:28 PM

Congratulations! Your work is not unnoticed regardless of the HA hype wink

- DSK-358448 Runtime error 6025 pure virtual function call at startup Opera Next for some users
- DSK-359770 Out of Process Plugins causing tab related freezes (mostly on startup)

Seriously? sad I can't help but think this is a higher priority than address-bar search tweaks. No point in adding features for people to test if nobody can use the browser due to bugs. (note the 6025 virtual function error does seem to have disappeared for me, at least for now)

Also no mention of the slightly-dragged-link-opens-new-tab bug that is still a major show stopper with using these snapshots. Warning to others - the bug still exists.

cabron Wednesday, April 11, 2012 12:56:50 PM

fu..n fix the Runtime error 6025!!!! Its getting really annoying, and its a major problem because it happens all the time not only at startup..

For the first time in years I feel disappointed by Opera sad

animeshaga Wednesday, April 11, 2012 12:58:38 PM

hey,
whats the difference 64bit and 32bit in terms of performace.
and my opera next has stopped auto updating, am i doing something wrong?

sorry for being off topic.

woj-tek Wednesday, April 11, 2012 1:00:38 PM

OK, very nice changes. I like that searching is now way better (multipe hits + on per word basis). Nice that you can turn of suggestions. However:
- there is only per-word matching therefore "obama" won't be find within address (in this example there is separate word in the title so it sill work)
- it would be nice to still have suggestions either when using letter shortcuts (i.e. "g search phrase") or at the end of the list.

Mr On Linemr0nline Wednesday, April 11, 2012 1:10:34 PM

Please make bookmarks appear above history results, there is a dedicated search field anyway.

Because in that example it's exactly "info.plist" or "SPFolder.Name", with the quotes. This wasn't working in 11.6x too. And like I've said, there is still a little bit more work to be done to improve this even further. wink

pursanovd Wednesday, April 11, 2012 1:26:23 PM

At last! Search is really better! With google suggestions disabled-finally get my needed results on top after some words typing.
Thank you, waited for such "speedy address bar search" for long time.
..now-testing...

When the stop, all the small stuff to add?
Take care of business. Bugs fix.
All lost the desire to use Opera.

Can somebody test if M2 (fetching mails) is working and report back?

Barraco Mármol Jerónimojerobarraco Wednesday, April 11, 2012 1:45:04 PM

Cool! testing! Having the possibility to disable/enable google suggestions is great!

Jordan TrillesCristallix Wednesday, April 11, 2012 1:46:54 PM

OMFG! Providing entries with patterns similar to "5.60 NOK in USD", "foo.bar baz" or "Info.plist" should now execute the default engine searching instead of trying to open the page, rather than resulting in the "Invalid URL" page being displayed. => heart

minho Wednesday, April 11, 2012 1:58:17 PM

Is there any way to disable the "Show more" in the address field?
I want address field suggestions use ALL my screen.

Thanks for the new release.

At all disappointed people: welcome to the wonderful world of running test builds.

FavDjiXas Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:12:23 PM

Can anyone confirm if the internet connection issues from previous build were fixed?

King Crimson Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:13:51 PM

Thanks!

...testing...

I hope you will fix DSK-359770 soon

PimPimz Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:14:13 PM

Great stuff. This build fixes (or should fix) a lot of annoyances - searching history and using searchterms with a dot in it.

Nope, but we are thinking about redesigning that "feature". What would you say if we just remove the button and don't provide option to show all the possible matches, resulting in limit to only 10 rows?

HPearcehpearce Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:18:20 PM

64bit email fetch still crashes Opera - 32bit is ok

King Crimson Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:20:57 PM

This snapshot (like previous) sometimes opens links in new tabs! worried

OlegYch Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:21:43 PM

huh
i just lost a comment because of "Bad request"
seriously, can you fix commenting and 'remember me' on this page?
it been bugging me for over a year

OlegYch Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:25:14 PM

here is the lost comment:
nicely done! thanks!
however i wonder why the bugs i've been reporting for several builds are still not in the list of known issues?
like http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1322012 (Could not access IMAP through ssl with unverified certificate)
and the bug about links sometimes opening in new tab due to overly aggresive drag detection

not sure if this would be the best way to go, the screen estate is still not fully utilized

Gölök Zoltán Leenderdt Franco BudayOrff Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:31:38 PM

Address bar, is that the most pressing issue? Maybe move by adding one thing, make it stable, and then move on. These little gimmicks aren't the heart of browser functionality. I'll try this version report again.

OlegYch Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:35:28 PM

looks like address bar completion is shaping up nicely, can't really complain about it now

Crashes opera on my 64 bit .... 32bit seems to work ok ... on the last 3 builds.

Gölök Zoltán Leenderdt Franco BudayOrff Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:46:36 PM

Not much is really supported.

This old problem: http://fuhkor.minitroopers.com/b/view/bat1

Also basic links will still launch into new tabs or windows.

The bar, what ever, it was the least of
problems. Also noticed that entry of URLs into that sometimes doesn't
load squat.

OlegYch Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:46:37 PM

hm looks like something is seriously broken

I think a customizable limit is better. smile

Gousti FruitGoustiFruit Wednesday, April 11, 2012 3:05:42 PM

These adjustements are a great enhancement and are very welcome !
Now you just have to adapt it to inline search :-p Wouldn't it be nice to be able to search for multiple terms in the current page, and to have little colored marks on the scrollbar to quickly access each match ?

minho Wednesday, April 11, 2012 3:08:39 PM

Restore window button does not work after back from full screen mode. Minimize, restore and close button are out of screen and the Opera window is not restored.

alexl1984 Wednesday, April 11, 2012 3:17:02 PM

For the search dropdown, i would say do not limit to ten rows and get rid of the annoying show more button. Just improve the search algorithms to the point that it will almost never take over the entire screen anyway because its giving you concise results.

Cannot watch flash video on this build, opera locks up hard. Plugin wrapper is failing.

Sometimes DNS resolution totally stops, opera needs to be restarted.
