Opera 11.63 Released for the Mac App Store

, , ,

A small number of users who downloaded Opera through Apple's Mac App Store, and who have recently upgraded their version of Opera have risked losing their customizations, such as bookmarks, Speed Dials, etc. People who run versions of OS X older than 10.7 or have installed Opera through opera.com have not been impacted by this problem. While this only affects a small subset of our userbase, we are deeply sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.

But now we have fixed the issue. We released Opera 11.63 exclusively for the Mac App Store. People who upgrade to this version will see their customizations restored, just like before they upgraded to Opera 11.62.

The upgrade problem to Opera 11.62 was caused by our build system being configured for the upcoming version Opera 12. For several technical reasons, this caused Opera to create a new profile for the upgrading user. This had the effect of hiding all configurations and customizations. We've now resolved this, and users who upgrade to Opera 11.63 will see everything back the way it was. We have also made arrangements to avoid similar problems in the future.

This special release means there will not be a release of Opera 11.63 for any of the other builds or platforms.

We also recommend using Opera Link, our synchronization service. This helps ensure your configurations will remain intact even in the event of a software or hardware error.

As much as I like Opera Link, I find it a bit unstable, especially with bookmarks - if I delete some bookmarks on one computer, changes not always synchronize to other systems. Also there's always a "Trash" folder inside "Trash".

I was hoping for an Opera 11.63 update for Windows so that Facebook and GitHub show up correctly for me. I am on 64-bit (if that matters) and for sites that use secure HTTP, the pages are screwed up. Updating from 11.61 introduced this problem. Opera Next doesn't have this issue however.

Still, that's great news for Mac users.

Yes, I have to say that *IS* annoying if you're already a loyal Opera user... especially when you install a new version of Opera somewhere - you must remember to delete all bookmarks and speed dials (and empty the trash) *BEFORE* starting Opera Link, otherwise things can be in a big mess afterwards! mad

Off-topic, but a nice feature-request would be contact synchronisation... it's a bit of a headache to find someone's e-mail address if you don't remember which machine you used to mail them!

Thank you for restoring the original profile!

But you should be careful not to recommend Opera Link because you should know from the Opera bug database how many serious data-loss bugs are present in it.

For the new installation, ok, it's acceptable. But if you are a "loyal" user and update Opera, this mess everything! Very very very annoying.

The problem with Opera link is that it does not sync numerous things, e.g. anything mail-related (such as feeds, which take a long time to setup from scratch if you want it all exactly like it used it be), extensions, the toolbar setup,...

Opera link would be better if it could 'restore' your browser in case of a new installation.

Indeed. Things are even worse if you dare to stray from the path of Opera righteousness and set up the search engines to your heart's desire. In this case Opera deliberately and thoroughly messes up your configuration and there's no way to repair this as long as you don't accept Opera's way of querying Google and Bing (which excludes https queries). At least for your bookmarks problem there's a simple remedy ...

- copy your bookmarks file (bookmarks.adr) to a safe place before you upgrade Opera

- upgrade Opera, run Opera once, then exit Opera

- copy your saved bookmarks file back to its original location (overwriting the existing file)

... this will preserve your bookmarks unaltered as Opera 'makes a note' in its preferences file that it already has spammed your bookmarks, so it won't happen again.

The Link Opera is good but, when you mess up the configuration like Search list provider when syncing.... like mine mistake delete all the search list, and then i want to restore it. i don't know how. it is not like Firefox have the default button list search provider. and i ended up uninstalled opera.

then i reinstalled it. it is restored to default. but when i syncing with Opera Links. i get the list search provider i mess up before. and i lookup on Links website, and don't found any configuration to fixes it. it turned me down. i hope the opera Dev fixed this problems.
