Opera Desktop Team

Accelerated process

This spring we are doing everything a bit different. Firstly we have staffed up our desktop engineering team with a large number of great engineers. This means we are moving faster than ever before. Secondly, as you know, we are undertaking some massive changes to the platform integration that will give significant improvements for all three desktop platforms. The current estimates for the remaining work for Opera 10.50, however, indicates that we will reach final product quality earlier on Windows than on the other platforms. As such, we have decided to not let Windows users wait for the other platforms to catch up, and rather push it out earlier than the rest. You will notice this in the near future as we will reach the beta milestone for Windows, while Mac and Linux will reach beta around the time Opera 10.50 reaches final on Windows. When the Windows version hits final we will focus our attention on bringing the other platforms to the same quality as soon as possible. We also expect this to be an exception from how we work, meaning we will once again ship final versions for all platforms at the same time in the future.

Return of the penguin and Widgets for Desktop
This snapshot contains a new core update with a large number of fixes for regressions. Many features in 10.50 are more stable or work again like in 10.10. Widgets will also run as standalone applications again, as previewed in 10.20 alpha. And finally, Linux builds are back!

Other highlights:
  • Upgraded Carakan engine
  • Search box enhancements
  • Bookmark fixes
  • Improved stability
  • Restructuring of the Opera menu
  • Return of UNIX builds

I'm not sure if it's just me or my native skin, but it's not finding any of my icons. I saw this:

Originally posted by desktopteam:

Menu icons missing on Windows

but I'm referring to toolbar icons. All the icons in my skin are being ignored and all the defaults are being used.
All the visible images are favicons. All the text is because Opera can't find fallbacks for the icons in the skin. Here is an excerpt from the toolbar.ini:
Button9, "Open in IE"="Execute program, "iexplore", "%u", "Open in IE", "Ie""
Button10, "Open in Safari"="Execute program, "safari", "%u", "Open in Safari", "Safari""
Button11, "Open in Chrome"="Execute program, "chrome", "%u", "Open in Chrome", "Chrome""
Button12, "Open in Firefox"="Execute program, "firefox", "%u", "Open in FF", "Firefox""

Re: Widgets are back
Is it planned that there will be no way to remove the widget icon and space it consumes from the address bar?

same on linux.

Tri M. NguyenTriMN Saturday, January 30, 2010 2:45:00 PM

Single-key shortcuts don't work with standard keyboard setup. Have to switch to Opera 9.2 compatible.

Domdom0410 Saturday, January 30, 2010 2:45:04 PM

Just tried to book some train tickets through First Great Western and the stupid Verified by Visa page came up. I typed in my password and tried to click on submit but this made the entire page just freeze and nothing was clickable. I had to go back a page, forwards again to the Verified by Visa page and press enter rather than clicking on submit after typing in my password. Always worked fine with 10.10.

Vista SP2

Espenher Saturday, January 30, 2010 2:46:04 PM

Middleclicking to open a link in a new tab still isn't working properly on the mac build. That is the only thing that stops me from testing 10.5 on a daily basis. Without this, I have to change all my browsing habits.

If you could pleeease fix this, I would be happy and can totally live with daily crashes p

And a windows-version before the mac-build. Meh.. I guess the windows-users still is the majority p Hopefully you can talk some sense into Apple so we get a version for iPhone and the new iPad as well smile

It has been said publicly a before but I'll repeat it again, "Carakan needs more work to run on PowerPC".

Qbikqbik13 Saturday, January 30, 2010 3:06:00 PM

Can You add option to add "Opera turbo" button to Address bar?

Aaron Tothaaront Saturday, January 30, 2010 3:07:33 PM

Where can I find the transparency setting for Mac?

"Support for enabling transparency on the top only"

Andylee Satomichaelpuermayr Saturday, January 30, 2010 3:09:09 PM

I think it is the right way to release the Windows version as soon as possible, because the growing Win7-Mass is really missing Jumpbar-Support and not having this makes a BIG minus in trying to convince somebody of Opera. :-(

Ohhh and Command+` to switch cycle through application windows in Mac still don't work

firstnight Saturday, January 30, 2010 3:10:25 PM

"Bookmark fixes"

Incompletely fixed as yet on WinVista Home Basic. Build 3216 still imports a false trash folder [with standard folder icon] from 10.10 which cannot be deleted but shows a document context menu when right-clicked. You're getting closer, but correct function still may require the user to manually rewrite the Trash entries in Bookmarks.ini

Is it no longer possible to import adr files? I don't recall seeing that mentioned in the developer's starter comments in any of the snapshots published.

Arguggi Saturday, January 30, 2010 3:13:00 PM

So the "there might be a new feature next week too" refers to? Widgets?

Thanks for fixing url address in bottom left corner, it was driving me mad.

Sirtuiini Saturday, January 30, 2010 3:13:46 PM

Great to have middle click panning back up

Found some bugs with mouse gestures:
-Gesture down (new tab) on a web page creates new blank page instead of speed dial but the gesture on blank page or speed dial creates new speed dial.
-Gesture down-up (copy page to another tab) creates blank page.

NicoHellbillyDeluxe Saturday, January 30, 2010 3:19:26 PM

I really love the new look of the statusbar, great job on this smile

But I don't like the look of the menu. Can you make it look natively on Windows 7/Vista? Same goes for the menu bar, which I don't use, but it needs a refresh, too.

One more thing: When will "opera:" pages have the default Opera 10 look again?

Anyway: Thank you for a great new Build!

Robert MeijersRobert90 Saturday, January 30, 2010 3:19:37 PM

The current estimates for the remaining work for Opera 10.50 indicates however that we will reach final product quality earlier on Windows than on the other platforms.

Final before March (read: before browser ballot screen)? smile And seems logical, because you want to release it before the browser ballot screen arrives, and you don't have different architectures to account for (read: no powerpc needed for Carakan). And you probably just have more people working in the Windows team as in the Unix or Mac team.

Return of UNIX builds
