Opera Labs with SPDY released

,

An interesting new technology appeared out of Opera Labs a few minutes ago: a build with the low-latency HTTP pipelining replacement SPDY. In short, it means faster and prioritized connections between the browser and supporting server.

Head over to the Opera Labs blog to read all about the protocol and grab the downloads while they’re still fresh.

The feedback we are interested in for this release is whether you have any performance or consistent connection issues. Please use the comment section in the Opera Labs blog post.

SPDY has already been deployed on many Google services and on Twitter. The blog post includes some information about how to make your web site SPDY ready so you can take advantage of the new performance potential.

, , , ...

Following up on our Christmas gift we are pleased to offer an updated release of the out of process plug-in and 64-bit Labs builds of Opera. If you just can't wait, head over to the Opera Labs blog, and grab the builds right now!

Please keep sending in your feedback yes

WARNING: This is an Opera Labs build: It contains work in progress, which may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all. Opera Labs builds are not based on current Wahoo snapshot releases.

Camera and privacy changes in Labs

, , , ...

Welcome back on the desktop blog in the New Year! Our batteries are fully loaded, we hope yours too wink, so lets start this year with something interesting, that will catch your eyes! Let us share with you an experimental Camera build, which we made available at Opera Labs. From now on you can set and manage privacy settings for the camera directly from the UI, which wasn't possible in earlier build we showed you. When you are visiting the page, that wants to use your camera, you'll be asked to grant permission to camera stream for that site via special notification callout.
This new privacy settings interface contains information about all used devices, including geolocation settings.

With the getusermedia support you don't depend on the 3rd party plugins or special extensions. Everything what you need is just Opera Browser ... oh and web camera of course!

So if you have some webcam plug it in, grab the build from Opera Labs and check how it works!

Developer notes: If you've tried to use camera with our previous labs camera build, notice that we are up to date with latest specification. Remember to use video as an object instead of a string when accessing video stream through getusermedia.

64-bit and out-of-process plugins builds now available on Labs

, , , ...

You might think we're all quiet here just before Christmas - but head over to Opera Labs to see where the party is at! We're releasing an early build of the work in progress that will eventually make Opera more stable, secure and faster. Out-of-process plugins (OOPP) mean that Opera can shield itself from plugin crashes, and as a bonus we will be releasing 64-bit builds for Windows and Mac for the first time!

What are you waiting for? Get your fresh builds on Opera Labs. Builds released on Opera Labs will not interfere with your Opera Next install.

Linux WebM Labs, minor update

, , , ...

When we initially announced WebM support some Linux users may have found that the builds provided did not work for them. However, we have subsequently made a small tweak to the Linux packages so that they should now work on a wider range of distros. If WebM support wasn't working for you before on Linux, then please re-download the package and try again.

As always the best way to test an experimental build is to run Opera 'in place'. To use a package in this way, from the terminal enter the following:

$ tar xf opera-10.54-21867-webm.i386.linux.tar.bz2
$ opera-10.54-21867-webm.i386.linux/opera &
(This assumes a 32-bit system. Adjust accordingly if you have a 64-bit system).

If you want to install the Linux build alongside your main Opera Linux install, use the included install script and specify a suffix of webm, as follows:

$ opera-10.54-21867-webm.i386.linux/install --suffix webm

If you continue to have problems playing video, ensure that you have all the required video dependencies installed. See "Using video with Opera 10.50 on Linux/UNIX" for more information.

WARNING: This is an experimental Labs release. It may contain severe bugs and cause data loss. Or it may just provide great HTML5 video support.

WebM Labs release

, , , ...

As you have probably already heard, yesterday Opera released a Labs build with WebM support. You can find out more details in our Labs announcement, Opera dev article or Philip Jägenstedt's blog post (Philip leads our HTML5 video effort).

This post is provided to give you all a place to share your thoughts on this historic announcement. However as always, stay on topic. Comments should be about video support (specifically WebM video support). Remember that Labs releases are not snapshots, they serve to demonstrate new and ground breaking features we are working on. That said, they still are not meant for regular usage, since they do share the same potential for serious bugs as the snapshots do.

Experimental <video> build released on Opera Labs

, , , ...

Yesterday we published an experimental build with support for the <video> element and 3Dcanvas for the "standard geeks" to play with :-) This build is based on Opera 9.5 Alpha so if you want to play with this please remember to not install ontop of a existing version. You can download it from the article on dev.opera.com. We have added new native controls and you can also embed Video in SVG. You can find video examples here: Some pages using the video element in SVG: And a dancing and lip syncing to Spice Girls wannabe video of Lachlan from Core QA wink
