10.10 goes final

,

No new 10.10 snapshots today, the final version is ready! :hat:

We'd like to thank everyone for testing the snapshots, and thereby helping to iron out the last issues. The latest snapshot (windows build 1893) is the final release. So if your running that build you do not need to upgrade.

Are you using Opera 10.10 with Unite? Please help us to spread the word about the new release!

Stay tuned for 10.2 alpha snapshots! :-)

Something for the weekend?

, , ,

Isn't it nice getting builds? So nice in fact we thought you might want one for the weekend!

The main fix here is to DSK-271546 (After signing up for a new account, Opera isn't automatically logged in after restart), so please make sure this is working for you.

Thanks in advance for the testing!

RC 3

, ,

At the Opera HQ we are feverishly working to fix all bad issues! The new RC build fixes a few more issues with not restarting Unite properly. Also, it addresses some more Unite problems and includes performance improvements. For Linux users, there are some fixes for the systray! As usual, we appreciate any reports about regressions! Happy testing!

Key fixes and a focus on stability

Time for another snapshot and also time for another team member to announce it!

Since I'm involved in UNIX/Linux testing it seems appropriate that I should be the one to announce a snapshot with some nice UNIX fixes. Firstly it seems we got around the Qt 4.5.3+ 100% CPU issue. Also a fix for freezes during DST-to-normal time switch. Finally, we noticed that a few of you were having problems getting Opera to pickup your default Qt style. If you are one of those users try running Opera with the new '-systemstyle' argument.

Of course it is not just Linux specific fixes. There are several Windows stability improvements, crash fixes, Unite fixes, tweaks to improve old features (e.g. check out the list of search engines in doubleclick menu.) ... But I won't list them all here, scroll down to the change log for the full details.

Oh, and before I go remember the Unite Apps competition!

We want Unite applications, you want stuff (right?)

, , , ...

This is a teaser for a Unite Apps competition we have recently started.
Prizes will be awarded each week to the developer with the best application. The winner will be determined by a team of Opera employees. Up for grabs are gift certificates to online retailers equal the value of a Nintendo Wii or a brand new mobile phone!

If you want to enter the competition, you don't need to do anything special, just submit the application to unite.opera.com. Read more about it here.

It's out!

Finally, we can officially release 10.10 Beta. You have all been really helpful with testing, and loads of improvements have been made across the board.

We've been working really hard on Unite before this release. The backend servers, and especially the proxy, have been almost completely rewritten, to gain more performance and reliability. The Unite applications have also been redesigned, with some nice features added. Overall, Unite has become even easier to use, more stable, faster, better™, so please download this build and use it! One word of caution though: If you've used Unite before, remove all traces of the old installation before installing this one. We can't guarantee that it works otherwise...

The beta build is mostly the same as the same as the previous snapshot, with some improvements to translations and installation.

Go grab it!

It's a new day

, ,

And a new build, for you!

We're fixing more and more bugs, and our webapps team is getting closer to the ideal design for Unite Applications. But many of the recent changes in the Unite Applications didn't make it into the builds. How about album art in the media player? You got it, but only from the Opera Unite application repository.

Highlights
  • Many Unicode fixes for Unite
  • Unite local (IP-address) connections to Mac should work now. If you have more than one machine on your network, you can see others running Unite by clicking the Unite icon, or right-clicking the Unite panel
  • Text-shadows in Opera Widgets on Windows aren't magenta anymore
  • Switch to use PNG instead of XPM for the application icon on UNIX. Should improve the icon in most Desktop Environments, but it is also a bit buggy at the moment

Unite Apps are coming ever closer…

, ,

Another new snapshot for your testing pleasures! We have put a lot of work into finalizing Unite.

The biggest change comes from the Land of Marketing and Usability Testing. We are re-branding Unite Services as Unite Applications in the name of simplicity. (Apparently, no one knew what a service was.)

We still want all of you to focus on testing Unite, and ask that you leave the Sonar application running. Sonar is bundled in this snapshot, so there is no excuse for not turning it on. There are also UI changes to the default apps, so go have a look!

For Unite Application Developers (hey! you just got a new title), there are some new technical details for serving an Unite Application from your own servers. Use the new file extension .us .ua and serve it with the MIME type application/x-opera-uniteapplication. Users will get a security warning if the application is served from a non-trusted site (similar to add-ons in Competitorfox).

We are also experimenting with giving feedback on the most common crashes. This feedback page will be populated as a new tab in your session after recovering from a crash.

Known Issues

  • F2 dialog in non-browser view opens tabs in background instead of foreground
  • ‘Search the Web for’ from address drop-down doesn’t work

Highlights

  • Unite Services renamed Unite Applications
  • Unite Applications facelift
  • Sonar bundled for this snapshot (please enable!)
  • Experimental crash feedback

Help us load test our Unite proxy servers with Sonar

, , ,

This blog post is shamelessly copied from our Opera Unite blog.

With all the testing that has been going on in the last few weeks, it seems our proxy servers have been behaving well. We figured that is probably not enough though. We want to put the proxy servers through some more stress. This is all to make way for Opera 10.10, which will have Opera Unite as a regular feature of the desktop browser.

To do this, we have created a new service, "Sonar". This service will help us load test our proxy servers even better. All this service does, is sit quietly on your computer. When we run a test, data is requested from around the world. We request a small amount of data from each instance of this service, to help us observe our proxy's behaviour.

Now, once again, to be able to test this on a large scale, from every corner of the world, we need your help. All you need to do is download Sonar and keep it running on your Opera Unite builds.

Of course, you can stop the service at any time to opt out of the testing. Once again, thanks for all the help. You guys are great !

10.10 with Unite

, , ,

As promised, we would release 10.10 builds with Unite enabled. These builds are simply a continuation of 10.0, with more bug fixes, plus Unite. Focus is still stability and minor improvements.

The bundled Unite services are currently undergoing some design improvements, but this hasn't made it into todays builds. This build does however have many fixes to the Unite webserver, which will improve connectivity for many. Stay tuned for more... :-)
