Opera 10.20 goes alpha!

, , ,

After having released our final version of Opera Unite, we are proud to present you with the next level of Web applications for your desktop. Just a short while ago, we have released a Labs version, previewing our new approach to widgets: Opera Widgets are now first-class citizens in your computer, being accessible from the same place as other applications and providing the chance to develop desktop applications only once, running in any operating system.

We have listened to your feedback after the first Labs release. Improvements are already in the pipeline to enhance the experience of Opera Widgets within the browser, but please share all your comments and suggestions to help us make an even better product for you.

Please note that this release includes only changes related to Opera Widgets. There are no other changes in the browser functionality.

Go ahead, try it!

WARNING: This is a development build: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

BS-Harou Wednesday, November 25, 2009 1:42:39 PM

party , but I REALLY hope, this is not main feature in Opera 10.20

btw one think i don't like on this new "widget system" is, that i can't try widget before installation.

tymerkaev Wednesday, November 25, 2009 1:46:01 PM

Maybe you'd better use toolbars instead widgets? It will be easier. wink

porneL Wednesday, November 25, 2009 1:46:15 PM

sad

I hoped you'd release border-radius, box-shadow, gradients and transitions finally. C'mon! Don't stay behind!

Pfeleleppfelelep Wednesday, November 25, 2009 1:48:59 PM

it's quick!

I hoped for better JS perfomance (Data and Text operations in Peacekeeper) in the next step in development... I use only one widget atm - Analog Clock...

SardorbekpROCKrammer Wednesday, November 25, 2009 1:53:15 PM

Super) I liked it ... thanks

Ar1Pear1pe Wednesday, November 25, 2009 1:53:45 PM

yes Thanks.

porneL Wednesday, November 25, 2009 1:55:42 PM

I must export widgets? You can't be serious!

I think user shouldn't be asked about this until he launches a widget and quits Opera. Then the question should be "Should these widgets keep running?"

Anyway, "Why do I need export?" isn't clear enough.

porneL Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:01:58 PM

Bug: On Mac OS X Widgets use archaic OS9-style window resizing (I didn't even know it's possible in OS X!)

webpac Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:02:03 PM

Hello,

I'm sorry if this is not the right place to make this request but the only change that I miss in Opera is the feature StayOnTop a tab associated with the "freeze tab".

Martin RauscherHades32 Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:02:24 PM

That was fast! Great!

Kostia RomanovKildor Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:03:30 PM

* Where is widgets panel?? :-(
* How can I install widget to Opera itself, by legacy way?
* How can I remove installed widgets from Opera?
How can I install widgets without pinning they to program menu?

Александр Карпинскийhomm Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:04:30 PM

Where is Presto 2.4? cry

porneL Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:04:31 PM

On OS X: Widgets in Window:Always-Below mode shouldn't be visible in Exposé's All Windows (selecting them this way doesn't work)

zoquete Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:12:33 PM

No, this is the wrong way for me :'(

thobi Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:12:39 PM

argh sad

* an entry in the taskbar for every single widget?
* an entry in the start-menu for every single widget?
* an installation path for every single widget (with standard directory pointing to the windows "documents&preferences" folder)?

dislike... sad

Widgets outside Opera?

No thanks

Pinha24pinhaomega24 Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:34:27 PM

oh c'mon people...
you want more great feature like this and a well developed
JS engine or browser engine? or a incomplete thing?
when the new engine is completed enough , it gonna be released...
Why would I want a alpha release of the new engine
if is incomplete and is going to crash every second?

great Opera, is a good addition, hope widgets can be used
separate and in the browser

Old-Nick Wednesday, November 25, 2009 2:39:23 PM

No doubts, widgets will be main feature for 10.20

Presto 2.4 isn't incomplete, if it was, they wouldn't use it in Opera Mobile 10 beta.

And I'm also going to skip this release cycle. I never used a widget before, and I'm not going to use one either. I was hoping for a presto update, or some info about vega/carakan, et cetera, or an update for Link.
A few days ago there was some news about IE9 going to be hardware accelerated, today I read something about experimental hardware accelerated support for FF3.7. So when are we going to get some update on Vega? When it's already to late?
When I first read about Vega I thought it was going to be a very promising feature, but now it seems like every browser is going to be hardware accelerated, even IE. So when are you going to give us some more info about Vega (what the current status is, if you already have plans for an Opera version using Vega) or even better, some pre-release/gogi build to demo Vega.

Robert90: I feel your pain( I've never used widgets too. We have to hope, that Vega and Carakan will be in next version of Opera after 10.2!

well, i don't think there is any doubt, that the opera team is doing that anyway. there shouldn't be so much work with the widget-tools to keep them busy wink

Rafał MiłeckiZajec Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:03:27 PM

Err, where are any rendering engine changes? Like border-radius, multiple backgrounds, etc.? What about video support? We have dailymotion providing videos.

Hallo?

aFamous Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:06:03 PM

Wow... Thanks. smile

tomassplatch Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:06:05 PM

Thank you, I personally think widgets as standalone apps is a step in right direction and I like it a lot.

Just one bug: I installed opera from AUR in Arch linux i686 (using gcc4-qt4 tar.bz2 package), and I don't get any new entries in start menu (KDE) when I install new widgets, not even Widget Manager gets added. Am I doing something wrong?

Arup Roy ChowdhuryArup65 Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:08:30 PM

We don't need Widgets or Unite, we need new engine and the promised new Javascript engine. Opera is quite fast now but not the fastest with Javascript, Opera's initial philosophy was to be the fastest and securest, please go back to that instead of developing superficial toys.

Daniel HendrycksDanielHendrycks Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:08:55 PM

up Thanks Poland team. I don't expect 2.4. Hope there are more features. *Search Suggest is my main request for now*

Gap51 Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:09:24 PM

Opera crashes every time when i trying to start Unite.

mrd Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:11:07 PM

Ok... well moaning aside, one suggestion.

I changed the installation folder to a progfiles path however it does not remember that from install to install. Can it store the last used path somewhere? Or have a configurable option somewhere in the Opera UI? (Preferably two: something in the install that says "set path as default" and the ability to change that default in the UI preferences)

I'm having proxy and Opera Link issues for more than a year, and until now nothing was fixed or I saw the developers interested in resolving these...

Looks like they're going to keep teasing us, until they release Presto 2.4, in a year, or maybe two, who knows, maybe we will see Presto 2.4 in Opera 12, or 13.

It is awful idea to exclude widgetes from Opera at all and make them only independent applications. Users must have a choise, what form widgetes they want to have.

Did you report bugs?

BTW, I'm not quite sure why people keep asking the same questions, when the blog post clearly says "Please note that this release includes only changes related to Opera Widgets. There are no other changes in the browser functionality."
