Opera 9.21 build

,

Hi
I know you all are awaiting 9.50 to play with, but in the meanwhile we will have a update on Merlin.
We have kept the fix rate at a minimal here so the few fixes we have here are the high pri ones smile

Changelog
  • Setting weight for UI fonts now works again
  • Larger search field in speed dial, looked a bit chunky on smaller resolutions
  • Added Yahoo Answers to built in search
  • A number of crashes fixed and memory leaks plugged
  • Proxy PAC files now read from system on Windows and Mac
  • Windows media player 11 NP version now works without crashing. Get it here

Mac specific
  • Added support for Smart Crash Reports. (Note: For Opera to use Smart Crash Reports, it has to be installed on the system by the user; Opera will not install Smart Crash Reports automatically. Of course.)

Great !

Pathetic Friday, May 11, 2007 2:48:38 PM

Awesome smile
But.. sorry for this (probably really) dumb question, but I'm new to Opera: When I install this build over the 9.20 Final, does I keep all my settings, and boomarks, and cookies and so on?
Or is a clean install the better way to go to test this weekly?

Thanks in advance.

agony Friday, May 11, 2007 2:49:03 PM

runs perfect, as always up

GNU/Linux

Jonas Tulljetthe Friday, May 11, 2007 2:56:22 PM

Pathetic: It will probably be OK, but backup your ~/.opera directory (or what it's called on your OS) just to be sure.

Runs perfect on Ubuntu Feisty. Thanks!

I think it's probably a better practice to install betas on the side of final builds and only upgrade final builds with finals.

I know this can be done easily with the classic installer by simply specifying a different directory name when installing--the profile will also be separate.

I assume the MSI installer works the same way, but I haven't used it much in this context.

rseiler Friday, May 11, 2007 3:30:42 PM

Question: Does this build address any Vista-specific issues? The most obvious one would be Opera's tendency when exiting to stay in memory for either several minutes or permanently.

I end up doing an "End task" on it rather than waiting. When I start Opera the next time, it never indicates that it's crashed, so it is closing off its files properly just not leaving memory when it finishes.

zolden Friday, May 11, 2007 3:35:20 PM

WTF?! Are you going to fix a bug with multimedia keyboards? Why do you ignore it? Or maybe you think that this is some kind of funny easter egg? I posted it in bug-tracker long time ago so it's strange to me why do you need it at all, if you don't fix submitted bugs

Simon Houstonshoust Friday, May 11, 2007 3:38:14 PM

Whats the bug? There have been bug fixes for multimedia keyboard for 9.10 which was a while ago.

Please explain.

FataL Friday, May 11, 2007 3:41:58 PM

Great! Thanks!

Sergio Uribesuribe Friday, May 11, 2007 3:48:55 PM

I have problem with Speed dial, if i edit it, and i press CTRL+H(Hide Opera) and than Show opera. The speed dial window are nothing...But if i go on another tab and back the speed dials tab, than i see the speed dial window...

Here is my screen video:

Arthur WilkinsonGT500 Friday, May 11, 2007 4:20:18 PM

I agree with chesss. I'd love to test out Kestrel, no matter how buggy or unstable it is... wink

Anyways, thanks for the new build. You've fed my addiction for the moment.

Please be more specific. I asked you a couple of times before too, but you never responded...

Andresandresruiz Friday, May 11, 2007 4:49:10 PM

great !! Thanks a lot !

I wasn't expecting any more build for a long term. So this a good surprise.

Please don't forget to fix new built-in chat into Yahoo Mail Beta, is not working at all; and some things are out of place. The "change status" appears under "My Yahoo!" link so you can't use it.

A lot of work.

pgweiss Friday, May 11, 2007 5:08:33 PM

Is there any reason at all for a Linux user to take this upgrade?

RSD Friday, May 11, 2007 5:21:04 PM

What's this "Windows media player 11 NP" used for?

I have Windows media player 11 installed and I can play all videos in Opera without that plug-in.

Is it only used for Firefox but for some reason if you installed it, did it make Opera crash?

Amadeus DemarziAmadeus003 Friday, May 11, 2007 5:28:15 PM

Any news on Smooth Scrolling in mac? smile

porneL Friday, May 11, 2007 5:29:29 PM

If the old 6.4 plugin (which Opera uses by default) works for you, good. But many people have problems with this plugin after installing WMP 11. It depends a bit on the way the plugin gets embedded on webpages, the problems don't show on all websites.

Investor Friday, May 11, 2007 6:47:54 PM

@mgillespie :

I did notice on the SpeedDial page, if you use the StartBar, the 2 overlap, and it looks a bit ugly....

Agree.
I see no point in having Start bar drop down when SD (new page) is requested...
If Start bar is customized to multiple lines, it covers the SD searchfield, and thumbnails, thus no way of closing Start bar (click in SD search field closes it), and no way of selecting SD thumbnail... ???
(using mouse only)

Sollution :

* close button in drop down Start bar
* or better, trigger Start bar from click in address field only
* or even better, trigger Start bar from a separate button, too

(I have address field on tab bar, thus Start bar is useful for hiding 4-5 buttons, making room for tabs. One toolbar environment, to maximize real estate for web content)

BTW. what about making address field size optional... add Medium and Large wink

RSD Friday, May 11, 2007 6:49:11 PM

Rijk

Thank's for the info.
I'll try that plug-in and see if something changes.

poncho Friday, May 11, 2007 7:31:52 PM

Thumbs up for WMP plugin support up

Vinodvinodkk1 Friday, May 11, 2007 8:21:34 PM

My Opera's start up and exit times are very sluggish for all 9.x versions . I notice a lot of file activity and takes about 15 secs for start up with few tabs open and exit is about 40 secs .... Hope this is fixed in 9.5

Soleen Friday, May 11, 2007 8:52:14 PM

Thank you for making startup dialog, a real dialog, and also thank you for fixing the problem with shared memory over VNC! Opera does not segfault there anymore.

On sparc solaris opera still freezes at the webpage:
http://www.tdbanknorth.com/net/selectstate.aspx?ref=/exc/html/login_redirect.html
When selecting a "state" for example New Hampshire.

Jeff ™intelimac20inch Friday, May 11, 2007 9:02:38 PM

Cool, Smart crash reports thanks developers! up

DarekGonsioR Friday, May 11, 2007 9:31:51 PM

I wonder if its possible to customize choosing of speed dial search engine?!? Now we can't easy change it (I mean which engine apears at SD page).

Keep up good work... regards... Darek.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ... wheeeze ... hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Silly boy- someone will always complain!! smile

ChristianResearchWizard Friday, May 11, 2007 9:42:48 PM

GonsoioR: you can customize the search engine from UI: Tools - Preferences - Search - click on search engine of your choice + Edit - Details - Check: "Use as Speed Dial search engine"

Kyle Bakerkyleabaker Friday, May 11, 2007 9:46:38 PM

w00t! It honestly doesn't matter to me if it's still 9.2x or 9.5! I just love testing out these new builds! Thanks a million desktopteam and keep up the fantastic work!

Paul McGarrytornado16 Friday, May 11, 2007 11:08:37 PM

When accessing pages with multiple username/password forms, hitting the wand now shows only 0,1,2 instead of usernames. Is this by design? I understand it's concept but would be nicer to have it broken out by username and position for instances where there are multiple accounts for the single domain.

Nabucconabucco Friday, May 11, 2007 11:31:18 PM

cheers we need a weekly each week!!!

firstnight Friday, May 11, 2007 11:53:39 PM

Maybe my ISP is just running better today, but I've been using 9.21 fully customised [by my standards. wink ] for several hours and its action is very crisp and quick compared to all previous 9.xx builds [all of which I made fresh installs in their own directories]. Speed dial seems not to be causing so much delay as it used to after I'd been running the browser for a few hours. Possibly that memory leak elimination mentioned by Olli is the cause of this.

OS: Win98

RSrschultz2002 Saturday, May 12, 2007 1:30:55 AM

Rijk, So we delete the npdsplay.dll and copy and paste the np-mswmp.dll in? Do we delete the npwmsdrm.dll also?

Steve DarkenDarken Saturday, May 12, 2007 1:49:47 AM

Excellent build, thanx. cheers

DoveD555 Saturday, May 12, 2007 3:45:37 AM

Anilcranil7 Saturday, May 12, 2007 5:31:24 AM

I am looking forward to 9.50........................

ayespy Saturday, May 12, 2007 7:27:07 AM

I've not had trouble playing most video. However, until the NP plugin, neither firefox nor Opera could play MSNBC videos targeted directly at WMP11. Had to use IE or forget it. Now, with the plugin, firefox plays them fine, and Opera can play them as well If I simply "identify as firefox."

Thanks for that.
