Opera Desktop Team

Reminder: Opera's desktop team is still hiring.. And we might want you!

Hey Guys
In a time when many companies are cutting down on their hiring budget, we are still out there in the market looking for talented people to hire.

How do I write this without sounding like a lame commercial? Well D'oh..

Is your code cleaner than your flat? Do you ping websites if they don't respond in 10 seconds? Do you ever look at a movie trailer and think "I have that font". Watched all episodes of Star Trek 4 times? Refer to MythBusters to prove a point?

Do you do all of the above and still have time to fix bugs and implement exciting new features that are always copied by some other browser?

Then you are the kind of developer we are looking for!

Please head over here if interested and submit your application:

Oh, would love to work for Opera and even move to Sweden or Norway for that, but lack for skills and at the moment it's only first year of acquiring baccalaureate.

But good luck to anyone who has a chance to get it!

SouthernCross 19. January 2009, 20:49

I a bit too young. :faint:

Hades32 19. January 2009, 21:24

Would be defenitely a dream job, but until you have an office in Germany you'll have to get along without me

Luchio 19. January 2009, 21:34

$mycomment = Hades32.comment();
$mycomment ~= s/Germany/Canada/;

// that's my invented language mixing C++ and Perl. :-)

AndyleeSato 19. January 2009, 21:41

I overfullfill the star trek part....I speak klingon fluently and also some phrases in vulcan and I am really good at c#, php, html, css and action script (typo3). Am I qualified enough?

piroxicam 19. January 2009, 21:42

Best. Sentence. Ever.

"...implement exciting new features that are always copied by some other browser?"

Chas4 19. January 2009, 21:43

Refer to MythBusters to prove a point

may think about it after I am done with college...

MTKnight 19. January 2009, 22:00

I would have thought the criteria would be far more than four times each epsisode. Except for The Alternative Factor: I wouldn't trust anyone who's watched that monster more than twice.

ADuda 19. January 2009, 22:34

I agree :D

kyleabaker 19. January 2009, 22:50

Haha, nice Olli. Unfortunately I don't pass one of the requirements:

Haha, planning on applying in the future when I finish up with school.

Enhanced 19. January 2009, 23:11

In my defence I always had a very messy apartment when I worked for Opera.

Duologic 19. January 2009, 23:47

Sounds great, I saw Opera takes internship.
Do they also take internships from students studying in other countries?
Maybe some interest from Belgium ;-)
What period do they mean with summer internship, is that july/august?

Paul Skinner 20. January 2009, 00:43

"Do you ping websites if they don't respond in 10 seconds? Do you ever look at a movie trailer and think "I have that font". Watched all episodes of Star Trek 4 times? Refer to MythBusters to prove a point?"

Oooo, 3 out of 4. Not bad.

GT500 20. January 2009, 06:32

I have, a couple of times, applied for jobs in the QA department. Been turned down every time.

thekryz 20. January 2009, 07:13

Would love to... but as Hades32 already stated... Germany is the desired working place :> But as you'd already have two interested people from there you should think about opening facilities here

eini 20. January 2009, 07:41

@thekryz
make it three

serious 20. January 2009, 08:49

well, my request for summer internship is still open

zyph 20. January 2009, 13:15

I'd be all over that Web Designer job, if only you'd move your headquarters building to the west coast of Norway

May I recommend Bergen or Stavanger?

virtuelvis 20. January 2009, 14:53

zyph: http://www.opera.com/company/jobs/opening/198/ and http://www.opera.com/company/jobs/opening/167/

Yes, they are both in Oslo, but this is such a nice city.

karaj 20. January 2009, 15:05

Huh, my dream job is open again ...

Muzzlehatch 20. January 2009, 15:43

Anything is cleaner than my flat! Not sure if that counts for the quality of my code, though! ;-)

gautam_chandna 20. January 2009, 17:16

@AndyleeSato: Check out this one http://www.opera.com/company/jobs/opening/167/ It might be applicable to you.

@Duologic: Summer internships are in the middle of the year, and the exact timing isn't as important as how good you are. Do apply, and I'm sure it wouldn't matter much if your definition of summer (july/aug) differs a bit from ours

vinczej 20. January 2009, 20:48

In this financial crisis to think about hiring is any "self-murder" (or eruption... )

danielcs 20. January 2009, 21:05

Too bad I still have 2 years until I finish my Computer Science course, I'd love to work at Opera. :D

There is no financial crisis in Opera. Quite the opposite.

Filip007 20. January 2009, 21:49

This is for high brain people only...so much syntax have this C++ how do you know what line do what after a year...that's crazy man.

:bomb:

Northgrove 20. January 2009, 23:03

I'll be damned. :frown: I failed at the Star Trek bit. :-/

Coding isn't that hard.

Rafał^ 21. January 2009, 04:52

Even in Wrocław (Poland) work is available. But I don't have good skills in programming. I'm really simply programmer. p:

jreynav 21. January 2009, 14:19

I'm, I'm :headbang:

lsallen 21. January 2009, 16:40

I am too old, too retired and my golf game needs attention first.

konic 21. January 2009, 20:44

Hi, I've just noticed that 'BREW Mobile Developers' are needed too.
Does it mean that at last we'll see Opera on CDMA phones?
Of course, I can run it right now under the J2ME, but not under the BREW
on my Nokia 6265i (CDMA).
...
P.S. How come that no jobs for North America (USA, Canada) developers?
Are we that bad here?

haavard 21. January 2009, 21:29

konic:

http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2007/12/06/
http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2007/10/24_2/
http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2007/05/22/

Just a few examples.

I don't know of we are planning developer teams in the US. Our other developer teams basically exist because there's a need for them there (or, as in the case of Poland, we got to pick nearly 30 highly qualified programmers for ourselves when another company shut down).

konic 21. January 2009, 23:14

OK,
first about BREW.
Here:
http://www.opera.com/mini/download/all/nokia_6265/
is what I see:
Note to North-American users
...BREW-enabled phones, including Verizon, are currently not supported
But in Press Releases:
http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2007/12/06/
It is declared:
With Opera Mini, now available on BREW devices....
Any comments?
...
Now about "…need for them there".
I am so stupid, I just don't get it. Except, it could be cheaper to buy polish developers than Americans or Canadian ones (I am from Canada, just so you know).
Just business.

chaals 22. January 2009, 03:49

@Konic, we don't currently have BREW versions downloadable for end-users. We have made versions for pre-install (which is easier - when users get their handset both manufacturers and operators have had the chance to add restrictions, which can make the install process difficult or impossible).

As Håvard said, part of the specific reason for building a developer team in Poland was that we got a great opportunity to kick-start a complete team, at the right time. There is also a logistical price issue - it is much easier for a developer to visit another office if they are all in Europe. In general starting a new office is very expensive

PS I believe and (*hope*) that we still hire people who don't watch Star Trek. Or will I find it harder and harder to talk to the Desktop team awww

Too young, though I'd love to work for Opera

Well.. for the time that is given to me I'd learn more prog. langs or something like that

MrBlueSky 22. January 2009, 15:11

I can brew up, I make a lovely cup of tea or coffee. I can use a vacuum cleaner too. Just give me a shout if there's an opening for a general dogs body!

No... Seriously! Please give me a shout. :coffee:

lamarca 22. January 2009, 19:32

sounds good to me.

AndyleeSato 23. January 2009, 14:35

I need a BS or MS in computer science to work for opera?
Man, I am 19! I am just about to finish up with my school time,... and I am certainly not studying computer science! :-D

Hades32 23. January 2009, 20:49

Can I have a Weekly please?

cscat 25. January 2009, 16:10

Don't forget Iran too. There are a lot of opera fans here.
Good Luck!

chaals 1. February 2009, 19:33

@AndyleeSato, there are people who don't have degrees in Computer Science at Opera - I am one (I do have a degree in medieval history). It is just easier to explain why they should hire you if you have all the normal formal stuff...

But if you really think you are an ace developer and want to do the test against the best, you *can* apply for an Opera job without a degree.

Note that there are also other jobs going - perhaps you're an early-blooming financial controller, or a person we cannot beat as a Marketing Manager? But it is true that we don't hire a lot of people who are 19 (although that isn't unknown either).

mrlami 3. February 2009, 18:23

where is a good place to post/suggest features users want in upcoming versions of Opera?

haavard 3. February 2009, 21:19

mrlami: Your post is off-topic, but take a look at the FAQ:

http://snapshot.opera.com/faq.html

metude 5. February 2009, 13:46

Where are you? You are no long-term?

haavard 5. February 2009, 14:29

metude, please indicate who you are talking to, and about what.

GoustiFruit 5. February 2009, 20:02

OT: what is that, where can we get more information ???
http://www.clubic.com/actualite-255876-opera-software-moteur-javascript.html

PS: got it -> http://my.opera.com/core/blog/2009/02/04/carakan
Made my day, can't wait to have a chance to test it :-)
