Opera Desktop Team

Better late than never, right?

We have a new weekly build for you to play with. We've fixed plenty of bugs on all platforms, and one of the biggest changes this week is a completely new Windows installer. Our old installer is starting to show it's age, and for some time now we've been working on a new one using the Windows Installer engine. This change has several advantages. Windows Installer is the native install system on the platform, it provides more powerful network installation options, and it allow us to translate the installer to more languages. But it has drawbacks as well. Windows Installer is not pre-installed on older Windows systems, and the package will be a bit larger. The transition has to be made sooner or later, and we think that the advantages now outweigh the disadvantages. Happy bug hunting! Changelog:
  • Tabbed browsing preferences have been moved to Preferences - Advanced - Tabs.
  • Fix for Shift+Click text selection.
  • Removed support for SGML comments in HTML. Comment parsing is now based on the Web Applications 1.0 draft.
  • Fix to allow object tags with an empty data attribute to load plug-ins.
  • Fix for loading PDF documents in a plug-in via the POST method.
  • Implemented stepUp and stepDown for Web Forms 2.0 date inputs.
  • Added support for Audio, as described in the Web Applications 1.0 draft.
  • Images held only in memory using the Image() constructor now report the correct dimensions.
  • Added support for controlling plug-ins with site specific preferences.
  • Clicking a label for a checkbox now fires events for the associated input.
  • Formchange event is now fired when contents of the form are changed.
  • Several designMode improvements, including handling of queryCommandEnabled and queryCommandState, and converting multiple paragraphs into list items.
  • Added support for dynamically generated script tags in SVG.
  • Allowed animating of flood-color in SVG using animateColor.
  • Fix for mouse events in widgets.
  • Dragging a scrollbar in a widget no longer drags the widget.
  • Fixed handling of :hover over block elements.
  • Improved handling of whitespace around inline elements.
  • Fixed aligning of fonts on buttons.
  • Self closing tags no longer break layout.
Mac specific:
  • Quote from mac developer minch:

    This build is fantastic!

  • Adobe has released a preview version of Macromedia Flash-plugin update for Intel-based Macs. This update is now compatible with Opera. Download is available at: <http://www.macromedia.com/go/2dda3d81>.
Windows specific:
  • For Windows users, this weekly build is only available in Windows Installer format. If your computer does not yet have the Windows Installer, it can be downloaded from the Microsoft download page.
Windows Installer specific: Installers are notoriously difficult to set up correctly for all systems, there are just too many different computer setups in the world for us to think of all of them. Anticipating that some of you might find bugs in the installer, we've set the installer to write a local log as it progresses. This log is stored in the file
install_log.txt
which is placed in the folder where the installer is run from. If you encounter problems while running the installer, we would very much appreciate it if you would file a bug report and provide the log as an attachment. The log will be overwritten if you run the installer twice, so please file the bug report first, and retry afterwords. smile If your install goes smoothly, just ignore or delete the log. Known issues:
  • (mac) Keyboard shortcuts with "ctrl" as modifier can cause Opera to crash.
  • (Windows installer) A few files are not removed on uninstall and have to be deleted manually.

The hunt is on!

Looks like the UNIX build is still leaking. I'd guess the others do too.

Koen Van der Auweraatog Monday, March 20, 2006 1:18:32 PM

I'm not really an installshield fan, but hey, like you say, it's probably inevitable anyway in the long run. (one of my annoyances is it has trouble with installing from subst'ed drive letters)
Maybe now it will be easier to roll out in big companies? (silent install possible?)

keep up the weekly builds smile

MarkusScorpio75 Monday, March 20, 2006 1:35:09 PM

... and still no NTLM working ...

Idan AdarYtseJam Monday, March 20, 2006 1:38:16 PM

Are you guys sure this is the correct build?
The tabs options is exactly like before.

Also, this build has the close tab X on my tabs even though it is disabled and it doesn't apply my Web page's settings from the preferences...

Kyle Bakerkyleabaker Monday, March 20, 2006 1:41:45 PM

Mark DellMadElk Monday, March 20, 2006 1:44:51 PM

Jakub81 Monday, March 20, 2006 1:45:15 PM

Audio object, yay! This opens some nice possibilities for widget creators smile

Kirillincident404 Monday, March 20, 2006 1:53:16 PM

First impressions:

• Fixed bug with incorrectly displayed links (example: nnm.ru)
• Not fixed bug with "Choose..." button for uploading files. (still need to doubleclick on it)

And minor installation cosmetic bug. Text not fit install window. (Screenshot)

On Windows there is a bug with history - I go from http://my.opera.com/desktopteam to http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/show.dml/186525#comments , but I see wrong number of comments. After manual refresh I see all comments.

Finally it is here, Thx bigsmile

padule Monday, March 20, 2006 2:13:19 PM

* clicking on the active tab doesn't send it to back anymore.
* selecting "close" from the right-click menu (on the active tab) doesn't close the tab.

TheMajor Monday, March 20, 2006 2:14:43 PM

Awesome: Clicking a label for a checkbox now fires events for the associated input.

rodel Monday, March 20, 2006 2:19:18 PM

Guys help please!!!

Trying to install the new build... run the installer, get the window saying preparing to install, and then get a pop up message saying INCORRECT COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS Windows installer V2.00.2600.1106 Copyright Micro$oft Corporation bla bla bla bla

Are there any alternative ways of installing Opera???

Haavardhaavard Monday, March 20, 2006 2:21:32 PM

Flash has been removed from the installer. There will probably be a way to easily download and install it from Macromedia, similar to the way it works with Java today.

Not by default, which is the same as in Opera 8. Try the "Click on tab to minimize" setting.

Please check the install_log.txt file, as explained in the announcement.

Dao Gottwalddazio Monday, March 20, 2006 2:22:37 PM

Some notes:

- :hover is not working for some of my links anymore: http://design-noir.de/webdev/
Used to work with the previous build.

- When viewing the source of the site above, is not fully marked as a comment.
Maybe related to the new comment parsing.

- CSS1 bug: http://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/Test/CSS2.1/current/t09-c5526c-display-00-e.htm

- rgba() still missing. Shouldn't be too hard to implement since you support opacity, right? wink

Kaya Ünalunal Monday, March 20, 2006 2:24:36 PM

@incident404: I did a clean install and saw that there was no flash plug-in anymore in Opera's root directory. Then install plug-in again and now i can see all the flash pages as well...

@Developers:
Why did you change all the language strings in english.lng?

All the translations by my.opera community will go to trash?

pgweiss Monday, March 20, 2006 2:24:54 PM

Are you guys _ever_ going to release a static rpm version?

Galrikh Monday, March 20, 2006 2:25:08 PM

I have a problem. I use Windows XP with SP 1
And after the download I try to install, the Windows installer begins, plop to the second installpop and then this error here:

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/8629/desktop28nc.jpg

[r4] Monday, March 20, 2006 2:26:09 PM

I'm having the same problem as @rodel - I'm using Windows 98 SE with some unofficial patches. Is the new Opera incompatible with Win98? I guess not - build 8265 works fine. And that's only the matter of the installer I guess. But I can't update this MSI any higher than 2.0. Version 3.1 - which you recommend to download - is available for Windows 2000/XP ONLY. Sorry. I'm not going to switch my OS. I hope we'll get another installer someday smile

Yuriyuri7 Monday, March 20, 2006 2:28:25 PM

Opera9 is excellent!!! But is it possible to make:

- unlimited storage for closed tabs, not purged on exit (wow!)
- special option for caching all history (for cool offline work!)
- picture search in searchbox (yes, a'm so lazy to do it myself wink
- "Select all" command in main context menu

and let's my IE gently weeps!

Kirillincident404 Monday, March 20, 2006 2:28:31 PM

unal: thanks, you was right

Galrikh Monday, March 20, 2006 2:30:05 PM

r4 thats not only on Win98, on WinXP same problem here

Could it be that the problem has something to do with the System language? I run on german

aimzz Monday, March 20, 2006 2:32:35 PM

So many new choices!!! (You have been listening)
happy

Kirillincident404 Monday, March 20, 2006 2:33:52 PM

YtseJam:
Sorry no bug with tabs. I used a modified dialog.ini

Dao Gottwalddazio Monday, March 20, 2006 2:35:16 PM

By the way, the installer looks ugly:
http://img467.imageshack.us/img467/2713/o9install3kx.png
But that's actually the fault of my InstallShield version (newer? beta? I don't know) ...

Espen B. AnderssonEspenA Monday, March 20, 2006 2:35:47 PM

TheMajor: Yepp smile Finally sites like twofifty.org works again smile

ermi Monday, March 20, 2006 2:35:48 PM

rodel, Galrikh, [r4]:

You have to update your Windows installer. Go to that Microsoft download page.

rodel Monday, March 20, 2006 2:37:27 PM

Galrikh - no I dont think that the problem with the system language..

RachidRachidNL Monday, March 20, 2006 2:38:57 PM

Any e-mail changes? For example, the previous weekly had a bug with displaying attachments within the browser. Has this been fixed?

Are there improvements for IMAP in this build? smile

//markpoleon Monday, March 20, 2006 2:38:57 PM

buttons style:show text display -84730260...?

Paulbitoclass Monday, March 20, 2006 2:40:33 PM

I have the same problem with the new installer that others have, 'Incorrect Command Line parameters'. I'm running Windows 2000.

Install_log.txt is not created in the folder I am running the installer from so I cannot check it.

Help! smile

(Although actually there's no urgency for me because others have already confirmed that NTLM is still not working, so there's no point me installing this version because I won't be able to use it anyway!)
