Opera Desktop Team

Valentine's Snapshot

Takk for sist! It's been a while since the last snapshot and the Desktop Team has been working hard to improve Peregrine. In addition to a load of fixes, there are some important changes:

Easily Subscribe to Online Feed Readers

It's now possible to subscribe to online feed readers directly from the feed preview page. The list of online feed readers will be expanded soon.

Web Mail Providers Changes

The previous snapshot included a new feature where clicking a mailto link could open a user's preferred Web mail provider, including Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and Windows Live Mail. Unfortunately, the Open The Web Team constantly struggles to resolve new issues that pop up with those providers because they don't officially support Opera. Thus, we have decided not to include any Web mail provider by default that doesn't officially support Opera. The Opera Team greatly desires to provide the best support for the services Opera's users use most, but when those services do not reciprocate, tough decisions have to be made. The Open The Web Team is working hard to get Opera officially supported by Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and Windows Live Hotmail.

In this snapshot, the following Web mail providers have been added: Opera Web Mail, Fastmail, and Yandex.

Integrated Crash Logging (Windows-only)

The IIXII Inspector tool has been integrated directly into Windows builds. Now, if Opera crashes, a log file will be written to the system temp. directory. This is just the first step in improved crash logging.

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: it contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Known Issues
  • Crash on start-up with OS X 10.4
  • Crash using search fields in the UI
  • Netvibes doesn't work (work-around courtesy of fearphage)
  • Font fallback problems, particularly for those using Russian as their default language on Windows
  • Google Reader entry in feed page drop-down doesn't work and displays incorrectly

Changelog
  • Fixed crash when showing authentication dialogs for feeds
  • Fixed problem that could make Opera send blank e-mails
  • No more progress bar for XMLHttpRequest (i.e. no more constant progress bar at Gmail)
  • Improved spelling checker underline
  • Several contentEditable/designMode fixes
  • Deactivated scrollmarker by default
  • Stability improvements
  • Auto-update improvements

Note: There's no Mac build at the moment due to stability problems with plugins.

Will we get one as part of this update later on or do we have to wait until the next round?

stranded Thursday, February 12, 2009 11:11:16 AM

I was unable to autoupdate, but autoupdater looks great. It didn't want to autoupdate because it didn't validate some file.

hobe Thursday, February 12, 2009 11:12:45 AM

hmmm. No known issues?

Edit:

Thanks!
I tested my favorite site.
Opera has rendered very fast.

But, Opera put out the error on jQuery test in Slickspeed.

Immediate correspondence if it is specification that this doesn't intend,
please.

Does the debugger's integration mean decreased perfomance now, for snapshot builds?

Ravindran NavaneethanRavindran Thursday, February 12, 2009 11:53:56 AM

Keyboard shortcut 'v' is still not working on Google reader, as in earlier 10.x builds. cry

lucideer Thursday, February 12, 2009 11:56:23 AM

No more progress bar for XMLHttpRequest (i.e. no more constant progress bar at Gmail)

Great news; this was particularly annoying using the popup-at-the-bottom which obscures the bottom of the page (as a side note, it would be nice if the popup-at-the-bottom added a temporary 20px margin-bottom while it's there)

Will it be possible to enable progress-bar on XMLHttpRequest as an option for debugging purposes (rather than having Dragonfly's net tab constantly open)?

grv02 Thursday, February 12, 2009 11:58:30 AM

Is 'Carakan' included in this snapshot? rolleyes

lucideer Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:00:50 PM

@grv02
Eh.. no.
Think Christmas, or maybe next Valentines day.

purgossu Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:10:53 PM

Little by little you're adding some new nice improvements to Opera, making it even better than it is.
Congratulations and thanks to Opera team! up

Philee Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:11:58 PM

Great update!
Is it recommended to deactivate the systemwide Inspector now?
It was also useful for other programs.

QuHno Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:12:30 PM

Nice one, better than flowers yes

edit: Deleted same question as from poster above ...

Ahmed GhanemAhmedGhanem Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:14:37 PM

MaximSailorMax Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:17:41 PM

Can anyone confirm broken style of feeds in feeds-viewer? Now all feeds have very small font-size latin symbols, large font-size other symbols(russian letters), large spaces between lines and strange font-family...

varyform Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:17:42 PM

Something very strange is happening with default font on windows (web page normal text).
Then I select, say, font A - Opera renders the text with font B.
-
Edit: selecting "Times New Roman" as default font gives me "Adobe Caslon Pro" (checked with dragonfly)

Tim AltmanJunyor Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:26:24 PM

@gorsov: No, the integrated crash logging does not affect performance.

@®azor: Yes, we know signature switching isn't working in Opera Mail.

@Case_: Bug number? I'm not sure what copying bug you're referring to.

@Philee: No, don't deactivate IIXII Inspector. It won't interfere with integrated crash logging and it's still needed for MemGuard.

@Does it happen on all feeds or just specific ones? For instance, does it happen with the feed for this blog?

@Ravindran: Bug number?

Thanks

dpx Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:32:17 PM

There is a problem with all Alpha builds with copying list:

- Let's say I want to copy a list of changes from http://www.rejetto.com/forum/index.php?topic=6650.0 (what's new)
- I select all text
- CTRL+C or Copy from popup menu
- Paste it anywhere (even in notepad) give me this kind of result:
http://www2.picfront.org/picture/hGgOPlrPLi/img/changes.jpg
(There are boxes in the place where should be new line)

When can you fix this problem? Is there a chance that it will be repaired to the next build? This problem making very hard to post messages on forums.

p.s.
Sorry for My english.

MaximSailorMax Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:33:22 PM

Yes, for all feeds, and for feed of this blog too.

hi,

http://www.fujifilm.ch/ flash menu is not working and http://www.tux.com/ crash on ubuntu 8.10

XenoAntaresXAntares Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:46:14 PM

@dpx: You are copying from a site that uses UNIX line terminators (ie LF/0x0A only). Good old Notepad cannot cope with that, it expects Windows line terminators (ie 0x10+0x0A/CR+LF). Simply use a decent text editor! (Notepad++, SciTE, PSPad, ..)

sirnh1 Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:47:02 PM

Thanks for the new build. (Great update for the speller checker)

I'm having trouble with the feed reader. (See screenshot: http://files.myopera.com/sirnh1/files/feedReader.JPG ) On the screenshot you can see (a part) of the feed reader, but google reader is 2 times spelled wrong, and the ' is encoded to a '
Is this normal?

Agoagostinog Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:47:05 PM

Autoupdated succesfully!!! :-)

Götz Bürklegoetz Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:51:39 PM

Still no HTTP-Auth working ... that's really really really annoying. Or is it just me with this problem?

The Alpha/weekly builds run quite stable here, but I just need HTTP-Auth for some pages.

Sasquatch Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:52:22 PM

I have a minor problem with these Alpha releases. I use a dark GTK theme on my Linux install. Now Opera uses Qt, so I changed it's palette so it reflects those dark colours in the GUI. Opera now uses the 'Base' colour palette for the e-mail preview and all websites that do not have a background colour set, will show that same 'Base' background colour. One perfect example is the website of my school for grades, www.osiris.hu.nl. The background should be white, not black, gray, or whatever colour you set in the Qt settings.

Any idea how to fix this?

Christianc1973 Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:54:48 PM

yes thanks! Scrolling-after-one-step-back-in-history-delay fixed up

sirnh1: Known issue :-)

MossMan Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:56:30 PM

I still don't get anything more than a non-functioning "Minimized Update" button...

And how is webmail integration supposed to work? I have OperaMail marked as the default webmail service in opera:config->Mail->Webmail Address but no option to use it on a mailto link. The Webmail Service is set to 0, so I assume that means inactive...?

Is there any other place these preferences should be set?

mmm12345 Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:58:39 PM

whats about shared qt4 for freebsd? I have qt3 installed only for opera sad

kakophonix Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:59:10 PM

Can you add more web mail services? I think ZOHO mail has unlimited storage space, free and supports Opera. Zenbe is nice but not Opera-friendly yet.

Heinrich WittHeinzDo Thursday, February 12, 2009 1:05:10 PM

Whats about a 64bit qt4-build?

Kyle Bakerkyleabaker Thursday, February 12, 2009 1:06:27 PM

Regression:
The 64bit qt3 build missing the application icon.
