Opera Desktop Team

Friday update

No new build this week, but don't despair, we haven't stopped either improving on 9 or working on the future of Web browsing smile

The last few weeks some of the desktop developers and QA people have also travelled a bit, visiting some of our favorite competitors, Microsoft and Apple. After enjoying the summer we're all now back to full speed again.

There will be more builds from 9.0x posted here pretty soon, some to verify fixes, but we may also try out a couple of experiments on you (consider yourself warned whistle ). But for now, browse safely and have a nice weekend!

9.01!...and the countdown starts...

Wow! Thanks!
Do experiments?.. on us? bigsmile

Mark DellMadElk Friday, August 25, 2006 4:58:43 PM

Thanks for giving us an update BORG, I think we've all been wondering where the Opera team was hiding smile

RamūnasRamunas Friday, August 25, 2006 4:58:48 PM

No matter what's improved, I want a new weekly. p

Remco Lantingremcolanting Friday, August 25, 2006 4:59:37 PM

I'm almost cured from my weekly addiction sad

Alexis DeveriaFyrd Friday, August 25, 2006 5:05:46 PM

*gasps* An update!

Cool, thanks for the news. smile Is Apple really much of a competitor? I guess they made Safari, but that statement still sounds kind of odd.

Alexis DeveriaFyrd Friday, August 25, 2006 5:13:38 PM

So, would the experiments be on a forked build, then? And would it be 9.5 or 10, or has that yet to be determined?

Tamil Friday, August 25, 2006 5:15:32 PM

wait

Shane R. Monroedarkuni Friday, August 25, 2006 5:18:24 PM

Can you experiment with us on the concept of allowing us to set the Zoom on a per page basis? That way, CNN.com can be at 180% every time I visit ...

Enjoy your break, boys. You deserve it. Opera has never been better.

S1oan Friday, August 25, 2006 5:20:15 PM

As far as I'm concerned, I'm happy to help you with the tests bigsmile

kisu kangcielkisu Friday, August 25, 2006 5:22:01 PM

bigsmile heh i even check this site once a day, hope that it would be a suprising build at the beginning of next week smile

Kyle Bakerkyleabaker Friday, August 25, 2006 5:25:41 PM

experiments are welcoemd here! bigsmile can't wait for an update! i'm so excited now!

@remcolanting
I feel that, haha, cept mine was more like daily, or even hourly, lol.

FataL Friday, August 25, 2006 5:27:11 PM

Is Apple really much of a competitor?

They are developing WebKit that can potentially compete with Opera in a future on mobile market, but not this time. wink

Martin RauscherHades32 Friday, August 25, 2006 5:31:21 PM

I love experiments! bigsmile

Alexis DeveriaFyrd Friday, August 25, 2006 5:43:15 PM

@FataL

Ah, interesting, I did not know that. smile

rseiler Friday, August 25, 2006 5:47:58 PM

Here's an idea for this space: Even if you mentioned it in the other thread, pick the ONE bug in 9.01 that you absolutely want fixed in 9.02.

Hands down, mine is one that's been around since shortly before even 9.00 went final, wherein anything listed in your Transfers window is constantly accessed by Opera for no reason--and I mean after the download is finished. Can't have that, and I now try to use Flashget for downloads just to avoid it. Full details:
http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/show.dml/384622?cid=2004051

The only update to that post that I'd make is that the bug is not the only thing behind the brief, occasional pauses seen when typing in Web forms like this one, since they still happen, though maybe not as often with Transfers cleared out (no, AV is not involved, and yes, others have reported it also on the forum).

skinnyJM Friday, August 25, 2006 6:04:20 PM

Microsoft and Apple are seen as "competitors" ?,
BORG, Opera is GREAT, so we need that to be changed to "partners" sometime soon !
smile

joshas Friday, August 25, 2006 6:08:15 PM

It's good to hear that weekly builds are back - I missed you guys. Sure hope you'll take a look at wish-list and try to improve some newsgroups and newsfeeds features, not to mention some really minor bugs.

FataL Friday, August 25, 2006 6:13:46 PM

@rseiler: It's hard to choose only one smile
My choice as developer is "Animate on Hover" bug. Bug #216355
Hate jogging bugs. This kind of bugs was in Opera 8 also but was fixed in 9. But Opera 9 have introduced new ones.
My choice as user is a wrong link selection when using spatial navigation bug. Bug #210669
All these bugs are regressions from Opera 8.

Doliprane'Doliprane Friday, August 25, 2006 6:21:07 PM

Ok waiting for your weeklies bigsmile

Alexis DeveriaFyrd Friday, August 25, 2006 6:43:48 PM

Okay, my one bug to fix:
#219267 - Arrow keys won't select search engine.

Also there's still multiple focus issues on the Mac that drive me crazy, but I don't have a bug number for that. Ah well.

olli Friday, August 25, 2006 7:13:45 PM

Fyrd: Arrow key bug is fixed :-)

Arthur WilkinsonGT500 Friday, August 25, 2006 7:29:06 PM

I've been going crazy without new weekly builds to test out. I was getting this urge to learn C++ and start working on misc projects at SourceForge... lol

Nice to hear that you guys are back on the job. Hope you enjoyed your travels. wink

BTW: I can't wait for these 'experiments'. It sounds like a lot of fun...

Andresandresruiz Friday, August 25, 2006 7:31:03 PM

I hope you had a great summer vacations, here in Colombia there's no summer this year, the weather is so cold, buy have been exciting to wait for next builds of Opera and expecting them to be great, like beeing able to use "delivery & read confirmations" in Opera Mail and compatibility in Windows live Mail and Yahoo Mail Beta.

Tks

Andresandresruiz Friday, August 25, 2006 7:37:25 PM

I like experiments on me !! GREAT !! Opera experiments on Opera laboratory rats !! You're the best !!

porneL Friday, August 25, 2006 7:52:06 PM

one bug? #220356
(ah, but I want soo many more! bigsmile)

Twilo Friday, August 25, 2006 7:54:13 PM

super thanks smile

Alexis DeveriaFyrd Friday, August 25, 2006 7:55:19 PM

@olli

Has it been fixed in the build you're working on or are you referring to the same "fix" that Borg mentioned last month?

Because that didn't and still won't work for me, even after a clean install (unless somehow it just wasn't "clean" enough). I see it does seem to work on Windows, just not on my OSX 10.3.9 machine.

PMoperafan2006 Friday, August 25, 2006 8:12:44 PM

I would like you to experiment on these:

1. Improved rendering of videos from many sites reported in the forums. These have issues alomost everyday.
2. Please include few buttons by default like home button(although you have start bar), reload every,back/forward with little drop down list option(rather than waiting for the user to learn how to hold on and get the list). These things will make opera friendly for new users.

3. Again, right click rename, rearrange bookmarks like IE does.

I know these are discussed like millions of other things in forums. But my last attempt to make you understand the improtance of these so that a new user feel home just after switching from IE or anyother browser.

Sorry, for posting things here.

Attila Szegediasz Friday, August 25, 2006 8:16:11 PM

It's great you folks attended Apple WWDC. What I'd really, really like to see in Opera for Mac is better integration with certain existing Mac OS services instead of duplicating their functionality. Most notably:

- use Keychain API for storing passwords (or at least, meaningfully integrate with it)
- use Address Book for contacts (or at least, meaningfully integrate with it)

Boghiu AndreiNemok Friday, August 25, 2006 8:20:12 PM

Has anyone have problems with google videos (video.google.com)?
The video flash component doesn't show up. This problem occurs very often (not every time).
I don't know right now what causes it.

underman Friday, August 25, 2006 8:29:30 PM

@rseiler: thanks, i had problems similar to what you described and seeing your post reminded me oh that, so i tried your solution and things seems to go smoother now... =)

One bug i would like to see fixed is the login problem on forums (like vbulletin). Cookies are enabled, and the login is fine, but very often (not always), when i quit the website and log again, i see that i still need to log in, it's really annoying =(
(luckily the wand is here).
I don't remember having this problem on 9.00

Also another thing would be to have the option in "preferences" to decide whether you want to use opera as a bittorrent client or not.
I don't think that the majority of users know about "opera:config" (where it's possible to disable it), otherwise it forces the user to do a right-click on the torrent and save it. (which is not always possible on some torrent sites as it just gives some html file to save).

Best regards.

SiMcarD Friday, August 25, 2006 8:43:17 PM

Sorry guys, but for me it's would be better to fix the actual bugs (there're many..) then add anothers features.

shoover Friday, August 25, 2006 8:59:34 PM

The Experiment:

I think the experiment is to see how the user community responds when the Opera guys go quiet for three weeks. :-P

@FataL, @Fyrd, @porneL -- How do you guys remember the bug numbers you're interested in? Do you just keep all of the "thank you for submitting bug number 123456" emails?

rseiler Friday, August 25, 2006 9:27:56 PM

@porneL: Yes, #220356!

What's that one again?

olli Friday, August 25, 2006 9:31:09 PM

SiMcarD: Who said we were not working on fixing bugs?

mrd Friday, August 25, 2006 9:34:08 PM

Funny. The lab rats are going "Woohoo! Can't wait for you to experiment on me!"

And allow me to join the rat chorus. Woohoo!

bigsmile

Daniel Sitnikdanielcs Friday, August 25, 2006 9:39:07 PM

Nice, I just hope those Microsoft devs have learned something from you guys. up

It would be really helpful if bug tracking system send e-mail confirmation, but unfortunatelly it's not.
I use Google to search my.opera.com/desktopteam where I usually post bug numbers. wink

@FataL: Using your cue, I Googled your mysterious #220356 bug (Fatal 220356), and there it was at #1. I can sense that the subject makes you uncomfortable, but if you permit me a comment or two, I have to agree that it's a whopper of a problem. Stunning, in fact. It saddens me that Opera could trigger such an event, but what's done is done. Don't you think it's time to let go?

Hey BORG,
if You want to experiment on me with cybernetic implants, making my skin greenish and a laser pointer over my eye, be my guest.
We are all geeks here, You know what I mean.

FataL Friday, August 25, 2006 10:51:37 PM

@rseiler: what are you talking about? smile 220356 not mine. And I can't find anything about it on Opera site.

Stevie1 Friday, August 25, 2006 10:52:50 PM

thats just perfect, weeeeeeee
I LOVE OPERA!!!!!!

rseiler Friday, August 25, 2006 11:12:48 PM

@FataL: Foiled again! Ah, it was just too perfect. You should have filed that one, not porneL.

Steve DarkenDarken Saturday, August 26, 2006 1:51:52 AM

Same here >> Waiting for the next weekly of the Opera. up bigsmile

LucasVB Saturday, August 26, 2006 2:02:17 AM

Remember to bring back the widget tab and lime\yellow highlights!

I'm excited about these experiments. Hope it's good stuff bigsmile

Matt Tylere2mtt Saturday, August 26, 2006 3:01:48 AM

OK, as long as you are promising some experiments, I have an idea for you.

I like using keyboard shortcuts and launchers, and I came up with a great idea for Opera.

There should be a hotkey that opens a input box. When you begin to type, Opera would parse through bookmarks, open tabs, most popular & recent history pages, mailboxes, saved mail filters, notes, special pages, and anything else that was related to your Opera experience. Relevant choices would be narrowed down as you typed more, and common items would move to the top. Tab would scroll through the choices, (although it should continue to accept text input regardless of what item was tab selected) and enter would open. Choosing the name of a panel (mail, contacts, link, etc.) would open and focus that panel. Choosing the name of a saved mail view or feed would open it in a window. Choosing a bookmark or a recent URL would of course open that page. The important thing is that EVERY part of Opera would be reachable from this one central point. A simple shortcut key would be needed, like CTRL+SHIFT, or a F key.

sebt Saturday, August 26, 2006 3:09:56 AM

M2 improvements please!!!

Seb smile
