Opera Desktop Team

Thank you and goodbye!

Oh boy! It's been over 7 years.. and it's time for me to move on, so today is my last day here at Opera.

It's been a long ride and it has mostly been great fun, but as with so many other things in life, it has to end at some point, and I just wanted to say thank you and goodbye to our users before I leave, and spend a moment looking back.

When I started back in june 1999 I was supposed to port Opera to AmigaOS, but instead I ended up leading the design and UI development
of the Windows version, and later the Desktop version after we completed the platform independent UI kit for Opera 7. Looking back, I'm reminded about the fact that things often take a lot longer time than planned.

To show what I mean, here's a comparison between Opera from 2005 and a "this is how I want my Opera" mock-up that I made back in year 2000.

I'm usually a less-is-more kind of guy, and really wanted this kind of simple design for Opera back then, but for those that remember the old Opera versions, you know there were a lot of things that needed to change before getting there. Why did it take so long? Well, that's often the cost of changing an existing product instead of making a brand new one..

  • Legacy. If you try to change too much at one time, current users will protest.

  • Compatibility. Even if you change the default, you might need to support changing back to the old way.

  • Technology. I had to develop the platform independent UI kit first. (We didn't dare to use HTML for UI at that point because of performance and platform compatibility issues)

  • Focus. Before Opera became ad-free, the focus was more on feature-richness to make a certain niche market willing to pay for it.

With Opera 9, things are pretty decent, but there's still a ton of things I would have wanted to change, simplify and extend, but it's time for me to move on and let others take it further.

I'm off to make music while I think about what to do next..

So thank you and goodbye!

Signing off,

Trond Werner Hansen.

BTW

if the new build will quash the bug in certificates' administration - the one just found by TU Darmstadt - it's worth waiting for.

Yours,
YBK

Pedro Miguel Coelho Pereira 15. September 2006, 17:48

Yeah, I'll miss you, but I'll miss more the new builds :frown:

Trond 15. September 2006, 17:49

I just gotta say it's very nice to receive so many thank you and good luck comments!

Regarding some questions that popped up:

- Why never an AmigaOS version?

Well, as those who know about the history of the Amiga, it slowly died away.. so there was really no point to it. One of the reasons for it being considered in the first place was that Jon (CEO), like me, came from the Amiga fanboy camp back in the early 90s.

- What's next?

I'm not sure. Music is a passion with more long term goals (like making album next autumn maybe) so that's one part of it, but when it comes to software and design, I haven't made any decisions yet. I might leave it alone for a while, or choose to pursue one of my many ideas... maybe start my own company.. or maybe just travel around the world or something

Cryptobionika 15. September 2006, 17:50

Good luck to the guy that leaves, truly, but what feeling do I have? That it is ANOTHER EXCUSE not to release a build in time. Guys, you got a job - creating new builds, and someone has to do that job! And making up constant excuses or dalays is REALLY starting to get on people's nerves. And I'm sure, I don't talk about myself only. Enough to read comments in few other topics to see that. It looks like you made it a habit to post new topics each friday, not new builds. I suggest you to post builds along with new topics, alright?

Mourad Mokrane 15. September 2006, 18:06

Trond,
I'd like to thank you for all the efforts you and other Opera team members made through these years. You achieved IMHO one of the main goals a developer can have: you all created a fantastic software and raised the bar VERY VERY high.
It is quite sad to see you leaving, so I'd like to wish you all the best possible, keep the good work whathever you do (software, music, anything...) and good luck to your future projects!

babox 15. September 2006, 18:11

@Cryptobionika
Opera desktop team is not obliged to release weekly builds.

Stevie1 15. September 2006, 18:31

@Cryptobionika
woah man, slow down your horses. u get this stuff for free.
whats the problem? u just want a release for the sake of it?
opera doesnt owe us anything, they do it cos its a pleasure for them. its not anymore if they get pressure.
man thats pretty annyoing...

Tim Altman 15. September 2006, 18:49

Wish you good luck....

Cryptobionika 15. September 2006, 19:56

@Babox
"Opera desktop team is not obliged to release weekly builds." - then they should say "we will release builds whenever we will feel to it". Not "fridays", and obviously they should not call them "WEEKLY" then.

@Stevie1
I don't know what "man" are you talking about, for I see a woman in the mirror, but since you are addressing to my nick I think you should know a golden devoloper's rule: RESPONSIBILITY for the soft you create, and for fixing bugs in it. So, since I post in this topic - I wish Trond all the best, and also wish responsibility for their creation to Desktop Team. I'm not mean, and not annoying, trust me. Annoying is to see the same bugs over, and over, and over. That is quite annoying. And if I call for people's responsibility, they should listen, not call me annoying.

Vygantas 15. September 2006, 20:26

Bye

Have fun & enjoy your life

I guess everyone was expecting new build, is this excuse to not release one? P: Kidding.

Matthew McGowan 15. September 2006, 20:38

Hey Trond,

You did good :D Opera is the best on all platforms, a big part of that is because of its UI.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do next, its strange that we can be so sentimental over software, but I hope your future endeavours can touch as many people as you have through working on Opera.

Best wishes,
Matt

We will release builds whenever we have a build to show you. "Weekly" they were called because they happened kind of in the interval of a week - not because we therewith promise to release a build every week.

HTH.

Kyle Baker 15. September 2006, 21:14

Wow, things have gotten heated I see. Weekly or not, I'm still looking forward to the next build, :D. (Crossing fingers, hoping to see an update any minute, haha)

olli 15. September 2006, 21:16

Weekly will have to wait until monday

Kyle Baker 15. September 2006, 21:20

Monday it is. I usually don't look forward to mondays much, but not this time. Thanks for the info olli. My words remain Trond...Good luck and thank you!

Burak 15. September 2006, 22:12

thanks & goodbye

roz 15. September 2006, 22:56

I love your baby.
I love OPERA.
Thanks!

Alienz 15. September 2006, 23:56

Goodbye Trond

Wish you good luck & all the best in the future

It is alright to release builds whenever there is one but it is also desktop team responsibility to let us know whenever there is none. There are people waiting for build every friday and waiting few hours at this blog. As far as I can see, only borg some time let us know that there was no build or the build will be out next week.

And thanks Olli for the info.

Ice Ardor 16. September 2006, 00:04

Anyone wanna help put together a going-away present for him? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trond_Werner_Hansen A wikipedia article in his name..

Good luck man! And thatks you for a great job!

HydanSeeker 16. September 2006, 07:44

Trond, many thanks for your excellent work over the years!

Opera has always been great, but its also come a loooong way from 2.x days - though some core features/designs are still evident (and are likely to remain in the future). Thank you for your part in making Opera what it is today.

All the best for your future endeavours.

graste 16. September 2006, 08:00

Good luck and much fun with the music. Perhaps you should make an Opera soundtrack when you're bored.

Torstein Larsson 16. September 2006, 11:47

Translating all of your new UI features into Norwegian bokmål has been a lot of fun, Trond.

So long, and thanks for all the builds!

Pedro Miguel Coelho Pereira 17. September 2006, 01:03

So, no build this week...

Yuri 17. September 2006, 11:13

Phred 17. September 2006, 17:00

Thanks for all you've done for opera? Good luck in all you do in the future.

Does Opera currently support e4x?

2 javascript bugs concerning document.open()

This freezes Opera every single time I visit this page:
http://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/webdevel.html

Anyone else see this behavior?

Haavard 17. September 2006, 17:10

DjiXas, perhaps you should read the blog post...

Trasak 17. September 2006, 17:19

So that Friday's Beta already will not?

Håkon 17. September 2006, 17:35

Good luck with your music, Trond!
What kind of music do you play? Keep us updated when(/if) you release the album! I must admit, I don't read in the Opera forum so it would be nice if you could write about it in your blog or something because then we can subscribe to the RSS feed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trond_Werner_Hansen > "Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name"

Ice Ardor 17. September 2006, 19:06

Someone deleted the article. Someone must have felt it went against Wikipedia policy. Seems like it'd be in their best interest to include as much information as possible. Oh well. Trond is awesome enough on his own.

Vygantas 18. September 2006, 09:41

haavard, I did before i wrote that.

freonchill 18. September 2006, 11:30

Anyone else having a problem where Opera 9 (when in scope) makes the Dell Laptop QuickSet (version A38) control of quick-keys (such as the Volume +/- and Mute Button on Latitude D800 series?

This seems to be broken for Fn+END (mute); Fn+PgUp / Fn+PgDn (vol +/-) also.

Even when holding the Fn+PgUp / Fn+PgDn it seems to just PgUp / PgDn in Opera. I have not found another program that takes these keys (even w/ the Fn modifier) and doesnt allow them to be used for global volume control.

any ideas?

dvanesse 18. September 2006, 11:30

Many thanks again for your valuable contribution.
Wish you all the best.

Bye bye Trond

chris.A 18. September 2006, 14:09

Yahia 18. September 2006, 15:05
