Opera Desktop Team

Help us help you!

,

Attention: This build is experimental.

It contains a feature reporting system that will report back usage of a number of features to Opera once per week. This allows us to know more about how you all use our product in an anonymous way.

The idea is that while some people tell us about their wishes and concerns in the blog and forums, thousands of people download the weeklies without giving direct feedback. By using a build with feature reporting, they will also contribute to improving the product for all of us.

Yes, you can turn the feature off:
opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableUsageReport

Normally we don't ask you to install a weekly on top of a final version, but if you dare do so this time it will help us get more correct data, making sure that we continue to make a better browser for YOU.

So, what does the report contain?

You can check yourself, a copy of the next report is stored in the Opera profile directory, under usagereport/report.xml. It reports things like what preferences you have enabled or not, whether you use Widgets or not, and how many bookmarks you have. Only numbers*, no domain names or other sensitive data.

*) Excluding Visa and MasterCard :angel:

Changelog:
  • Included experimental feature reporting mechanism
  • Java works again
  • Some stability fixes
  • URL entered in detached tab now actually opens it in the detached tab
  • Quick find in windows panel now searches in windows panel if both are open
  • Visited links "Expiry" settings now work properly

Great idea this report feature!

Good.

Fredrik Staaf 19. January 2007, 22:49

From a user that's been cheicking out your betas, tp's, rc's and weeklies since version 7.2, recommended Opera to a lot of friends and colleagues, convinced a lot of them, but never really have sent any feedback because of sheer lazyness, of course i'll use this version. And my I take the time to say thank You for such a fine piece of software!

Teal_One 19. January 2007, 23:00

Argh, there is a bug in this weekly (and at least in the one before). Opera crashes here regulary (but not every time) when i submit a formular (a sql statement in phpmyadmin 2.9.0.3):

---------------------------
Opera.exe - Fehler in Anwendung
---------------------------

---------------------------
OK Abbrechen
---------------------------

Any confirmations?

DD32 19. January 2007, 23:36

===
@MagicM: We may keep the reporting functionality in the next final, but in that case it will be opt-in, this is definitely not something we turn on by default in a final version.
===

I'd like to see it include in the final version, but disabled by default, and enabled via either opera:config or a checkbox in the General Settings of "Allow Anonymous reporting of features used, to help tailor future versions to the majority of users needs" or something..

Thanks!

Cryptobionika 19. January 2007, 23:50

Yes, I understand that you would like as much feedback, as possible, but I would prefer a normal explanation on how to disbale feature report still. I am an advanced user, but this just doesn't make any sense:

"Yes, you can turn the feature off:
opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableUsageReport"

"config"? Any "congig.ini" file of something? Or "Config", "UserPrefs" file, folder? Haven't found any. Also, "Opera" preferences doesn't seem to have any "config" panel also. So how in the name of privacy I turn it off? (Yeah, I know you don't collect any private information at all, but I just dislike sending any information, even if it's about the buttons I click, sorry). So please, could you explain a little bit clearer? Thanks.

Christer Mjellem Strand 20. January 2007, 00:02

Teal_One: Please submit a bug report for your crasher. Find more information on how to log it and submit a report at http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=432

Naelphin 20. January 2007, 00:03

Does Opera have access to Microsoft's OCA? I send my crash data to them, and I wonder if Opera bothers to use the service.

Bryon Jones 20. January 2007, 00:04

So far so good this one is running. The last weekly was having major problems of crashing when I

1) Went to netvibes sometimes
2) Sites with java or flash
3) Some sites with crappy embedding

ale5000 20. January 2007, 00:36

There is any chance to see a Hotmail mail beta fix in browser.js in the near future?

Rijk 20. January 2007, 00:52

[quot=Dro77naRe]Why when I open this report.xml in Opera I see just digits? Under Firefox it shows the source tree of the file...

Opera has no special XML view to show the markup, it just renders the content. You can get an userscript to create an XML view at http://userjs.org.

Or save this stylesheet in you userstyles directory (see opera:config#UserPrefs|LocalCSSFilesDirectory to learn where this is). After a restart, the userstyle you saved should be available under 'View > Styles' to get a pretty style when looking at usagereport.xml in Opera.

@Cryptobionika:
It's an address that opens a configuration editor inside Opera. Copy & paste the address to your address field and press enter. Uncheck the checkbox, click the 'Save' button below the section and you're ready. But you might want to take a look at the file usagereport.xml (opening in Notepad works fine) to see there is really nothing remotely likely to be worried about in it.

HeeZy 20. January 2007, 01:36

wait a minute.....what if i use Opera 8.54 as my primary browser, where i do most of my surfing, email, rss feeds, etc. and i also use Opera 9 as a second browser that i use to just surf around trying to catch bugs.

i don't use the mail, rss or widgets in opera 9, only in opera 8. will this affect affect anything? it prolly does...

mrd 20. January 2007, 02:03

Well I've taken a backup of the profile and upgrade installed.

Excellent idea to do this. Hope it provides much benefit, especially as you finetune it as you go along versions (extra info/different info)

Is a automated crash report on restart option on the horizon? :smile:

cooz 20. January 2007, 02:15

hi, since one of 9.1 preview build (i don't remeber if was it first on some other) i had bug which some time ago was already in opera:

when page is opening and tab will be changed address of that page disappear from address field till page loaded, every time

i've tested it on 2 computers with same results

till now i was using 9.02 while checking from time to time if bug was fixed,

i decided to install this build with hope it' will be reported, as bug's still there, if you already know it won't be reported please tell me what to do/how to trace and report it

i love opera with whole my heart, please help make it fixed...

Cryptobionika 20. January 2007, 03:15

@Rijk

Thanks, you are right. I did check and decided not to turn off the feature-reporting function.

@klingoncowboy4

No, Opera Team only collects the information about program features that you use. Program preferences. No information on the sites you visit is being sent anywhere.

Ahui886 20. January 2007, 03:21

The new stuff is... java back, usage reporting, some stability fixes, and version nr. is 9.12... What to make of it...??? :wink:

PeterRabbit 20. January 2007, 06:02

"Thousands of people download the weeklies without giving direct feedback."
And many others only say : "Thanks ! First, 2nd !" and so on...
You must write a rather fluent english to give direct feedback and have interesting issues to notice.
So, I'll try : is it quite necessary that this error console sempiternally opens ?

Kyle Baker 20. January 2007, 06:49

@Investor
haha, ok. thanks for checking it for me. i must be going crazy, lol.

Dustin Wilson 20. January 2007, 07:19

Are there any ports we need to open to have this information sent to you guys?

Sebastian Bremicker 20. January 2007, 08:23

Hi,

thanks for the new build! But I have the feeling that using built-in bittorrent makes it crash randomly?

Ciao

Sebastian

svetlin 20. January 2007, 08:59

Will you make the statistics available somewhere? In this blog? Just the basics. I'm curious what features are most popular.

For example 100 people installed this build, 80% using mail, 10% widgets, etc...

yksyks 20. January 2007, 09:09

Did I miss something or Opera changed its behavior? From now on, when I click URL from outside Opera, the page opens in the CURRENT tab instead of creating a new one! Could anyone advise something? Thanks a lot, this is terrible!

"Reuse current tab" is unchecked, of course.

(WinXP SP2, Opera 9.12 8701)

FataL 20. January 2007, 10:12

I'm curious what features are most popular.

Mee too!
BTW, that's my report from work (that's why Bittorent-NumberOfDownloads = 0) :wink:

scipio 20. January 2007, 10:28

I see FirstInstall and then a number that probably represents a date. How to convert that number to something readable, and does this number really say how long someone's been using Opera (in the same installation folder I presume)?

ciwir 20. January 2007, 10:48

I have one problem,
When i try to enable Opera voice i receive error "Download failed" ? My internet connection is fine and runing with no problems.

Opera 9.12 Build 8701
System Windows NT 6.0 Build 6000 [Vista Ultimate]

Johan Borg 20. January 2007, 11:41

@scipio: Yes, FirstInstall tells us how long Opera has been used with that profile directory. The number is a UNIX time stamp, you can convert it to a date here: http://www.onlineconversion.com/unix_time.htm

We record the install time in order to know how features are being used over time: For example how long the average user has used Opera before starting to use Notes. We can also look at what features old-timers use most, to see what keeps them with Opera :smile:

Jack 20. January 2007, 12:16

Javascript is screwy in this build.. A load of simple tasks, mainly relating to XmlHttp and other less commonly used events like DOMContentLoaded return "Security Violation" errors.

Yagotta B. Kidding 20. January 2007, 13:19

Gmail (G-Mail Google Mail GoogleMail for search engine's sake) still not working. Able to sign in, breaks thereafter.

As an Operaner from 3.0 onwards, I should like to use my favourite Webmail with my favourite browser - and not be forced to keep Gecko around ONLY because I cannot read my e-mail in Opera.

Never mind heavy tweaking in order to accomplish compatibility with Gmail - be it through browserjs, or any other means, provided that it is well documented.

Another problem is the constant re-defining of the standard interface (CTRL-N, CTRL-T - you know what I mean). Newbies are lost in translation; even IT-professionals are unsure about the ini-files. There seems to be no stringent documentation of the finest browser interface in the world (yes, I do mean Opera here), only some haphazard entries in the Wiki by Nontroppo and Literary/Lofoten-Moose.

I should prefer to write my tweaks against rock-solid documentation. Kudos to Moose and Nontroppo, yet their great work is still shrouded in mystery instead of being heavily promoted by Jon, other leaders and the great desktopteam.

So, thanks for this marvellous piece of software, keep up the good work, and please give us a hint or two how to tweak it in a secure manner.

Sending my stats,
YBK

FlashBuster 20. January 2007, 13:44

Am I the only one whose Opera crashes sometimes when clicking on an unread mail in gmail?
Happened two times in 5 minutes now.

Kenneth Crudup 20. January 2007, 13:57

@FlashBuster: It hasn't happened (yet?!) with this current weekly, but some 80% of the crashes in Opera for Linux occur while using GMail.

JSJAG 20. January 2007, 14:38

CPU use

This is odd and perhaps I never watched it before....

I have a program that monitors, CPU speed / usage / core temps etc. When using OP I see that the CPU speed will burst to maximum and then back down. This doesn't happen using IE or FF.

I don't think it is a problem, is it? I just found it an odd happen-stance.

I guess I made a completely clean install back in June (which is what report,xml indicates), because I've using Opera in c:\program files\opera for many years now. :psmurf:

FlashBuster 20. January 2007, 15:07

@kennycrudup:
I'm using Windows XP SP2. And although Opera behaves absolutely stable for me, gmail seems to be the only site it crashes occasionaly.

edit: I just clicked through all my unread mails, and it didn't crash again.
I didn't reboot since my first crashes or change something else. My Computer shows no signs of other misbehaviour, so i don't know, why it crashed before.
Hope it stays like that.

Seldaek 20. January 2007, 15:23

New build installed and running since yesterday evening, UserPrefs|EnableUsageReport is checked in the config, however I can't find any report.xml on the whole system disk, any idea why this might happen ?

// 20. January 2007, 15:51

@Seldaek
Opera/profile/usagereport

Seldaek 20. January 2007, 15:56

No that was my point, it's not there, and I searched my whole C: partition to be sure, didn't help.

Using WinXP Pro 64bit by the way..

Phred 20. January 2007, 16:09

I'm a purist I guess. I don't use bittorrent, voice, feeds, widgets, chat, wand, mail, contacts, or fraud protection. However, I do have about 4 notes that i never add to/delete/change.

scipio 20. January 2007, 16:19

No that was my point, it's not there, and I searched my whole C: partition to be sure, didn't help.

I selected Help > Check for updates... and restarted Opera. After that, the file appeared on in profile folder, but I'm not sure if any of those actions had anything to do with it. :whistle:

Seldaek 20. January 2007, 16:23

Okay it worked, although I doubt the "Help>Check for udpates" helped a lot, it probably had to be restarded once after the update was complete. My bad for not trying that earlier.
