Swordfish and Opera Next

, ,

We're happy to present you the Alpha of Opera 11.5 aka Swordfish. There are 3 features in focus here:
1. Opera Next, basically a dev channel for snapshots
2. Password synchronization
3. Speed Dial extensions

Opera Next allows you to run the upcoming release of Opera alongside with your stable installation of Opera. It will always be automatically updated to the latest snapshot build. Opera Next is easily distinguishable by the Opera menu and the white icon. Read more here.

We've been continuously enhancing Opera Link with new synchronization options. Swordfish introduces the most requested feature for Link: password synchronization. You can enable it when you set up link for the first time or in the Synchronization Options dialog. Read about password synchronization security at the Opera Link blog.

Swordfish brings your Speed Dial to life with Speed Dial extensions. Speed Dial extensions are like small web pages embedded in your Speed Dial, powered by Opera's extension framework. They allow developers to make live previews of web pages or other nice decorations for your Speed Dial. Find out how to make Speed Dial extensions here. On the Opera extensions page you can find some sample Speed Dial Extensions (requires Opera Swordfish).

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Nice thing! Like Chrome's DEV channel smile Can you provide more information about changes and fixes?

Will there be an article, explaining why you've implemented it just now, and how did you overcome all the problems with security?

Again build1009? bigeyes

pursanovd Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:15:43 AM

BTW, SpeedDial extensions open a wide range of new extension types! Like currency exchange, weather updates in live, news and so on! Really must try this thing! But what about synchronization? If i install one SD extension-it wont show on other computer with SDSync, right?

"Alpha of Opera 10.5 aka Swordfish" I think you wanted to write 11.5 there

tiberiusvp Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:31:15 AM

Sounds great :-)
What measure of security/encryption is taken in password synchronization?

floweb Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:31:41 AM

Opera Next is an awesome idea bigsmile

Agree. Now I want smth like Canary channel too (fresh updates every few days) smile
Too late for internal password sync, most of people went to LastPass extension while waiting for that feature.

"happy to present you the Alpha of Opera 10.5 aka Swordfish" ... Opera 10.5???

NicoHellbillyDeluxe Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:36:34 AM

Great, thank you!

By the way: Is the blue menu icon only used for Opera Next or will it be the default color for 11.50?

archive1 Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:38:09 AM

i love to see a gold/silver price speed dial extension

Would be fun if you could animate the weather extension like HTC bigsmile

jottosson Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:39:33 AM

1. Which security is used when transferring and storing my wand passwords?
2. Will the wand sync be synced with other devices? Perhaps not on the Desktop team's table, but I'd love to see the wand sync feature on Opera Mobile on my Android device.

Excellent alpha by the way, works perfectly!

Giuseppe Bilottagbilotta Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:41:47 AM

btw is there an easy way to import all my stuff from opera into opera-next? (bookmarks, magic wand, speed dial ...)

For that Opera Link exist, just sync between builds

Z1-AV69 Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:45:53 AM

Password sync is a great feature, but I would like some information about it's security too.

archive1 Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:47:37 AM

How do I keep myself logged into both youtube and my gmail account when they both use different username. I have to type in the password everytime I visit either webpage and opera can't seem to save the username/password on youtube

kanstisama Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:48:08 AM

huh nice, this build works for me better than the last final version bigsmile
at least it's not crashing so often...

j0c1323 Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:55:54 AM

I thought this version was the one with hardware acceleration sad

+1

I am keen to ditch Last-Pass, with it's "hacky" JS based solution for a proper solution like OperaLink. However I would like to read about where encryption takes place, what is sent to Opera link servers, how it's secured.

andrsyng Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:58:07 AM

make extensions synchronization

nycoon Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:04:04 AM

Looks nice! smile But how ca i get my Speed Dials from stable to OperaNext??

Damian StępnikeDameXxX Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:04:27 AM

One question... When will Hardware Acceleration? confused

This snapshot had already WebGL and Hardware Acceleration.

Judging from the skin file it's only for the "next" installation.

I don't think that's a valid assertion. Most people will not install an extension like that. However, those who use Opera Link are likely to syn passwords as well, so they will be using it anyway.

It's there as a built in feature, so people who use sync will also sync passwords.

That does not mean that Hardware Acceleration will be a 11.50 feature..... Most companies use continuous integration which means new features are constantly kept inline with upto date releases. It may be a Opera 12 (or later feature), we simply don't know.

You shouldn't take it as concrete that because a labs release called 11.50 had a HW accel demo that it will mean 11.50 will get the feature. The feature is ready when it's ready....

M2 Contacts Sync (or Google Contacts Link)
Form-Fill Sync.

Mod0528 Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:23:21 AM

Hmmm Opera devs polishing speed dial, when (in MY opinion) it is just a shiny toy.
Myself never will store passwords in browser. I'm handling it thru Keepass.
For me more way important if Opera devs can make to remember zoomed pages, not tabs and more polish at address bar.

BS-Harou Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:23:52 AM

I would make the blue of O-menu button a bit darker, otherwise good job Waiting for core updates smile

Second that, I will not use it before Opera confirms it is already encrypted by my link password or master password when it leaves my computer.

Does it even support master password? If I have master password on one computer, turn on password sync, will it be required on other computer before I am able to use or even Opera code is able to access those synced passwords? If not already then I would very much like it this way.

Not a snapshot. Just a demo build.

What's with that speed dial obsession? Just stop that, seriously. There are more important features that modern browsers need.

Says who?

Focus on HTML5, implement SPDY, plugin sandboxing etc and don't waste resources on eye candies.

Speed Dial is not eye candy. It's one of Opera's popular features. And it's a UI feature, so I'm not sure why you started talking about things that are irrelevant to the UI, and handled by a completely different team at Opera. Fail?

pikachu01 Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:27:00 AM

Site: gmail.com
Options: Zoom != 100% (e.g. 150%)
Behaviour: Hovering on a tab causes the zoom to not scale correctly.
Impact: Gmail.com becomes a 100% scaled zoom (on a 150% sized canvas)

Anyone getting this?

Ondřej MorávekWooshcz Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:30:13 AM

I like this 'dev channel' very much. I can have my stable Opera version right next to this developer snapshot. This could encourage much more people to test snapshots. Great work smile

venin Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:30:17 AM

Previous builds also had this issue, but if you set Scaling of pages to 120 % and have preview on the tabs, there will be misplacement of different objects on some sites.

For instance in Engadget:

To easy replicate: Do not show preview on tabs, open Engadget, hit + 2 times to get 120 %, then drag down the bar under the tabs so you see the previews.

Win 7 64 bit.
