Swordfish and Opera Next
By olli. Tuesday, May 3, 2011 7:11:50 AM
We're happy to present you the Alpha of Opera 11.5 aka Swordfish. There are 3 features in focus here:
1. Opera Next, basically a dev channel for snapshots
2. Password synchronization
3. Speed Dial extensions
Opera Next allows you to run the upcoming release of Opera alongside with your stable installation of Opera. It will always be automatically updated to the latest snapshot build. Opera Next is easily distinguishable by the Opera menu and the white icon. Read more here.
We've been continuously enhancing Opera Link with new synchronization options. Swordfish introduces the most requested feature for Link: password synchronization. You can enable it when you set up link for the first time or in the Synchronization Options dialog. Read about password synchronization security at the Opera Link blog.
Swordfish brings your Speed Dial to life with Speed Dial extensions. Speed Dial extensions are like small web pages embedded in your Speed Dial, powered by Opera's extension framework. They allow developers to make live previews of web pages or other nice decorations for your Speed Dial. Find out how to make Speed Dial extensions here. On the Opera extensions page you can find some sample Speed Dial Extensions (requires Opera Swordfish).
WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Too late for internal password sync, most of people went to LastPass extension while waiting for that feature.

By the way: Is the blue menu icon only used for Opera Next or will it be the default color for 11.50?

2. Will the wand sync be synced with other devices? Perhaps not on the Desktop team's table, but I'd love to see the wand sync feature on Opera Mobile on my Android device.
Excellent alpha by the way, works perfectly!

I am keen to ditch Last-Pass, with it's "hacky" JS based solution for a proper solution like OperaLink. However I would like to read about where encryption takes place, what is sent to Opera link servers, how it's secured.

I don't think that's a valid assertion. Most people will not install an extension like that. However, those who use Opera Link are likely to syn passwords as well, so they will be using it anyway. It's there as a built in feature, so people who use sync will also sync passwords.

That does not mean that Hardware Acceleration will be a 11.50 feature..... Most companies use continuous integration which means new features are constantly kept inline with upto date releases. It may be a Opera 12 (or later feature), we simply don't know.
You shouldn't take it as concrete that because a labs release called 11.50 had a HW accel demo that it will mean 11.50 will get the feature. The feature is ready when it's ready....

Myself never will store passwords in browser. I'm handling it thru Keepass.
For me more way important if Opera devs can make to remember zoomed pages, not tabs and more polish at address bar.

Second that, I will not use it before Opera confirms it is already encrypted by my link password or master password when it leaves my computer.
Does it even support master password? If I have master password on one computer, turn on password sync, will it be required on other computer before I am able to use or even Opera code is able to access those synced passwords? If not already then I would very much like it this way.

Speed Dial is not eye candy. It's one of Opera's popular features. And it's a UI feature, so I'm not sure why you started talking about things that are irrelevant to the UI, and handled by a completely different team at Opera. Fail?pikachu01 # Tuesday, May 3, 2011 9:27:00 AM
Options: Zoom != 100% (e.g. 150%)
Behaviour: Hovering on a tab causes the zoom to not scale correctly.
Impact: Gmail.com becomes a 100% scaled zoom (on a 150% sized canvas)
Anyone getting this?

For instance in Engadget:
To easy replicate: Do not show preview on tabs, open Engadget, hit + 2 times to get 120 %, then drag down the bar under the tabs so you see the previews.
