Freeze

:sst: Development for the upcoming My Opera site is now officially frozen.

User storage expansion

,

I said I had photos of the user storage expansion we recently had on MyOpera. We went from "xxx" Tb to "yyy" Tb. I won't say more. :-)

But I took some pictures for you. It's one of the rare times when we actually get into the very spiritual place, the Opera Norway-1 Data Center (just kidding :-)

I also said 30 minutes of downtime, while in the end we had almost 1 hour. Now I'm going to explain why. This maintainance operation was essentially planned as:

  1. Shut down MyOpera
  2. Shut down all connections to the storage volumes
  3. Unmount storage
  4. Extend storage
  5. Remount storage
  6. Bring up MyOpera again

Unfortunately, things stopped at point "3". The unmount operation locked up.

Usually during the unmount, everything that still needs to be flushed out to disk, it is sent out. But this time, unmounting locked the volume and one of the systems it was mounted on. The one you see in the console screen in the photo.

Ok. Cool. What to do? We shut down the machine anyway while it was still unmounting the volume. Then enabled the new storage space, and tried to bring the machine up again. The boot took ages because there were two different unchecked local partitions (...). At 17% of the second partition check the machine just locked up for what seemed to be 20 minutes. Then it finally continued. :-)

After some other filesystem recovery scary messages, our storage was back and with much more space available. Then we had to cast the usual incantations to bring the site up again, but that was the easy part. :-)

These are really crappy photos, I'm sorry.

Spam outage

,

Some of you might have a notification in your subscriptions that a new comment has been added to a blog post by user 'skize123'. We've removed all the comments, but not from the subscriptions list. We're working to fix this.

However, in your subscriptions top right corner there's a feature called "mark all as read". We suggest you use this if the notification is annoying.

Damn, we hate spam. :yuck:

Another planned downtime...

,

This time will be tomorrow (again, only for some of us) October 3rd at 10:00 AM Oslo time (CEST), 08:00 UTC. We plan to shutdown MyOpera for 30 minutes this time. Don't despair. We'll be back stronger than ever!

You are quickly filling up all our storage servers, so we need to provide more and more,
and also bigger and bigger ;-)

Happy uploading!
