My Opera News

Behind the scenes at My Opera

Good news, Everyone!

, , , ,

the opera bunch

We're ready to announce one of the biggest changes to our community since its launch in 2001. We are really committed to our work, and there's nothing greater to see new members joining or existing ones logging in!

But... There's a catch to it all. As most of you know, developing Web sites today is time-consuming, and in order to maintain My Opera we're forced to think of all different kinds of contexts when we create something new (or fix something old). So, Nicolas, Edoardo, Esteban, and I (together with front-end guys Fred and the new kid in town, Tristan) have decided that it only makes sense to continue development exclusively for Microsoft IE6 (according to our stats, the majority of our users are IE-followers).

Yeah, yeah, we know... We are the Opera community, but, boo-hoo-on-you!

There's simply too much work to support all those browsers along with their interpretation of "standards".

We can safely announce that starting today, a new era will arise.

If you think this is good, then help us digg it!

*whew...*

How many times does my heart have to jump up into my throat today? I've never seen a more obsessive approach to April 1st!

Good golly!

Christopher DaSilva 2. April 2008, 01:53

Haha, I almost fall for it!

Shane 2. April 2008, 06:14

I almost wet meself until I remembered it was a fool's day. But after yesterdays follies of whatever could go wrong did go wrong, this could have just sealed the worst day ever in my computing dealings....
Question: Why set a standard if the intent is to deter from it? Silly M$, Opera is for us kids.... ~~~Cheers~~~

Ken 2. April 2008, 07:17

Oh dang it; I just upgraded to IE7

gosh! 2. April 2008, 08:44

i'll help you to "digg it"...haha^^.

William 2. April 2008, 17:46

Some of us have become addicted to OPera Browser.
NOT FAIR.:furious:

William 2. April 2008, 17:49

Damn fell for it.Homer: Doh!
Need to start using the calender:lol:

Robert Hurley 2. April 2008, 19:50

This seems like an awful elaborate ruse to be used for an April Fool's joke. Is the Opera Development team trying to test out new functionalities for Opera Community? And, if so, what are they?

lokutus_prime 2. April 2008, 23:03

phewwww... as a macbook user (unix rools!) I read your announcment and then had a 'strange out-of-body-feeling', for a fraction of a picosecond, that you were serious :faint: - I mean, c'mon guys - IE! ....the browser with so many security (and other) patches it thinks it's the star in a broadway show called "Hobo's R Us" :D
I'm just glad you weren't being serious :left:

Phạm Lâm 3. April 2008, 02:48

PNG is not transparent in IE6. Can My Opera fix this bug?

One solution:

Andrew 3. April 2008, 09:19

So the gossip is true, Microsoft buys Opera. I heard it the other day but I couldn't believe it. Or is this all an April 1st joke. :-)

johnnysaucepn 3. April 2008, 09:36

Microsoft bought Opera six years ago. They just haven't told anyone about it. That switch in IE8 between IE7-mode and IE8-mode? It's actually between Trident and Presto.

It's true - a shifty man in the supermarket told me.

Alexei 3. April 2008, 15:22

@johnnysaucepn: :lol:

Cσησя Mμяρнỵ 3. April 2008, 19:31
