Behind the scenes at My Opera

My Opera under DDoS attack

,

We're currently experiencing a DDoS attack against My Opera.

Due to this the site has been a bit slow the past two days, and to speed things up a bit we've had to disable certain pages on My Opera. This is not something we like to do, but under the circumstances we haven't had a choice.

Your blogs and albums should still be fine, as well as the forums.

Please be patient while we come up with a more permanent solution for fighting this attack knight

Если судить по тому как я пользуюсь сайтом, то у вас постоянные аттаки!!!
Judging by how I use the site, then you have constant attacks!

MyOpera works for several months as bad as if he had all this time under a DDoS-attack.

Seems they're always having trouble mounting successful DDoS attacks against you guys. What could it be? Beefy internet connection? wizard Powerful hardware? knight Efficient software? ninja Or maybe some rough and hardened server admins, that wrestle grizzly bears when they're not running the server? norris Either way, great work guys! yes

agreed, true hackers would have no trouble getting in.

Thanks for the Heads Up, Andreas! up
Communicating something like this to the community is always a great idea so that we don't have to wonder what the heck is up. We don't have to rack our brains trying to troubleshoot and wonder whether the problem is on our end.

Limit no of connections per IP.

Tamil, the site's ability to address IP bans would reflect the incoming connections as a null result.

Hmm ... I noticed some pages were a little slow. I'd say that's a big FAIL on the part of the script kiddies. lol

Will I notice the slowness on opera mini?

the only reason i would say no, is mini is debuffed in connection speed due to cell use. if you notice a difference, it'll be small to do nothing.

Sooo ... is MyOpera STILL under DDoS Attack?
I'm operating under the assumption that it still is because I'm still experiencing very bad functionality. I often even have to close Opera and reopen it to get MyOpera to again work.

Wizardlokutus-prime Friday, May 25, 2012 12:20:01 PM

I guess the effect, a slow down in speed and so forth, will also be either mitigated or made worse depending on what connection users have.

I'm on cable and I've noticed the slowdown but most of the time (ohoh! saying this, maybe I'm tempting fate!) the functionality seems to be working, although yesterday on a few occasions I had "Bad Gateway" messages when I tried to get in.
Today it all seems to be working fine from where I sit (fingers crossed!).

Andreas... Well done for making the announcement and letting us know what is happening!
Thanks!

That appears to be the most common symptom. The other symptom is the connection is closed by the 'remote server' rolleyes .
All things considered, these script kiddies must be putting in a phenomenal effort to get even this far. Your average small website would probably have crashed completely by now! irked .

I guess this is still an ongoing issue by the number of 502 Bad Gateway errors I'm getting while trying to use the forums. irked

I've had a few today when I try to change tabs or refresh my page.. and as well as that, the speed is way down again. Takes much longer moving between pages in my blog and to other blogs. irked

Andreasdigmed Saturday, May 26, 2012 3:05:40 PM

Yes, unfortunately the attack is still going. We're doing what we can, but unfortunately the occasional "502 Bad Gateway" message is hard to avoid.

Also, can't you do a counter attacks of the DDOS?

Wizardlokutus-prime Saturday, May 26, 2012 4:51:27 PM

I infer MyOpera is already doing robust contingency defence.
Using resources to mount an offence would be useless against the script kiddies... it's better to focus available defensive resources, IMHO.

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Sunday, May 27, 2012 9:17:43 AM

DDoS means Distributed Denial of Service. Distributed, means the source is several machines, and they're distributed over many networks in different locations. It's called Denial of Service, because the service is being overloaded in order to make it unavailable.

In this case, you probably can't fight fire with fire. My Opera has only one network. The attackers have lots of them. I think the attackers will be abusing the web services on My Opera. And I doubt the attacking machines accept incoming connections like the My Opera servers do. Thus there's probably no way to mount a successful counterattack.

But maybe it would be possible to stop the attack if the ISP's of the attacking machines could detect DoS traffic and deny their connection attempts towards My Opera. Maybe it's even possible to sue ISP's for having machines doing DoS on their WAN?

if your talking counter measures, only two come to mind, shut down servers, removes open bandwidth IP acks.

Suntana Sunday, May 27, 2012 4:08:11 PM

Well, whatever the case, I sure hope that this doesn't mean we now just have to live with this, deal with this from now on.

Guy FlemingVirusboy Sunday, May 27, 2012 4:22:26 PM

Opera ASI is indeed working on something, I've been around and talked to certain devs. They arn't just going to let it happen. The network they have has stood against it for what? Three weeks? The fact it's taking this long only means they are indeed have problem finding a solution worthy of this problem. Have patience.

I don't seem to have problem during NZ morning, up till about 1400 (Around 0200 UTC). It doesn't necessarily mean the attackers are based in the time zone that wakes up around that time. But makes me wonder. rolleyes

I have to say it is sad to see some people saying they will stop or already stopped blogging and/or photo sharing at My Opera because of the slowness and other troubles caused by the attack. Do they not realise that is the exact effect the attackers want to create? To me they are in effect supporting attackers. sad

Lucy in the sky with diamondssabineborg Wednesday, May 30, 2012 1:15:59 AM

Just agree with u.

der WandersmannderWandersmann Wednesday, May 30, 2012 1:36:14 AM

I don't think that the attackers are necessarily based in thet time zone, MM, but the machines they've managed to enslave probably are. People get up, turn on their machines, and we're under attack. The machines' owners probably have no idea that they're doing it. They may even be machines used in businesses.
However ... today seems to be free of the problem ... the Powers That Be may have stumbled on a solution. I was checking out Steve Gibson's site this morning, to see if I could find any suggestions, because I know he has managed to write some routines that prevent attacks of this sort.

Adele BrandSittingFox Wednesday, May 30, 2012 10:45:19 AM

It wasn't good for me when I switched on my computer about five hours ago, but it's stable now. I'm even tempted to try writing a blog post right
