My Opera under DDoS attack
By Andreasdigmed. Thursday, May 3, 2012 4:17:06 PM
Due to this the site has been a bit slow the past two days, and to speed things up a bit we've had to disable certain pages on My Opera. This is not something we like to do, but under the circumstances we haven't had a choice.
Your blogs and albums should still be fine, as well as the forums.
Please be patient while we come up with a more permanent solution for fighting this attack

Judging by how I use the site, then you have constant attacks!

Communicating something like this to the community is always a great idea so that we don't have to wonder what the heck is up. We don't have to rack our brains trying to troubleshoot and wonder whether the problem is on our end.

I'm operating under the assumption that it still is because I'm still experiencing very bad functionality. I often even have to close Opera and reopen it to get MyOpera to again work.

I'm on cable and I've noticed the slowdown but most of the time (ohoh! saying this, maybe I'm tempting fate!) the functionality seems to be working, although yesterday on a few occasions I had "Bad Gateway" messages when I tried to get in.
Today it all seems to be working fine from where I sit (fingers crossed!).
Andreas... Well done for making the announcement and letting us know what is happening!
Thanks!

All things considered, these script kiddies must be putting in a phenomenal effort to get even this far. Your average small website would probably have crashed completely by now!

Using resources to mount an offence would be useless against the script kiddies... it's better to focus available defensive resources, IMHO.

In this case, you probably can't fight fire with fire. My Opera has only one network. The attackers have lots of them. I think the attackers will be abusing the web services on My Opera. And I doubt the attacking machines accept incoming connections like the My Opera servers do. Thus there's probably no way to mount a successful counterattack.
But maybe it would be possible to stop the attack if the ISP's of the attacking machines could detect DoS traffic and deny their connection attempts towards My Opera. Maybe it's even possible to sue ISP's for having machines doing DoS on their WAN?

I have to say it is sad to see some people saying they will stop or already stopped blogging and/or photo sharing at My Opera because of the slowness and other troubles caused by the attack. Do they not realise that is the exact effect the attackers want to create? To me they are in effect supporting attackers.

However ... today seems to be free of the problem ... the Powers That Be may have stumbled on a solution. I was checking out Steve Gibson's site this morning, to see if I could find any suggestions, because I know he has managed to write some routines that prevent attacks of this sort.
