Behind the scenes at My Opera

Spam filtering comments

, ,

On My Opera we unfortunately have to deal with spam, just like any other blogging site. We're continuously trying to find new ways of preventing spam, especially where the spam is most noticeable for our users.

One of these places is in the comments of your blog and albums. You may have experienced getting a comment on a blog post or image that had nothing to do with the post or image content, maybe even with an email address or a link to another website. This is usually what we call "comment spam", and to prevent this we're now running all comments through a spam filter. Comments marked as spam will be hidden, with a message that the comment has been marked as spam and is awaiting moderation.

Example: The blog or album owner is the only one who can see the original comment, and will have to mark the comment as "not spam". If the comment is spam, the owner of the blog or album can choose to delete the comment.

Example:
We'll probably have some "false positives", meaning that a few legitimate comments might be marked as spam. This is unfortunate, but thankfully all you have to do if your comment is marked as spam is to wait until the blog or album owner sees the comment and marks it as not spam.

If you notice any bugs with this, please report them in the My Opera: Feedback, questions and discussions forum.

I imagine they should be able to rig it so the blog owner is notified of all comments but subscribers are only notified of approved comments.

Testing.

Grrrrrrrrrr! bomb mad
Alright you lowlife, pathetic Spam Detector!
What the blazes is it NOW?
I already refrained from using HTML.

Is the algorithm still being tweaked?
Or is it now operating under the FINAL version?
Cuz this bites as it is now.

SuntanaLab Saturday, August 11, 2012 4:21:10 AM

Grrrrrrrrrr! This has gotten ridiculously irritating.
A second consecutive night of my Suntana User Name getting flagged for Spamming when I have done NOTHING wrong other than attempting to have fun chatting with friends on MyOpera ... something that USED to be allowed. Apparently it's not allowed anymore.

Uncle MickMickeyjoe-Irl Saturday, August 11, 2012 9:39:40 AM

What happens if the blog owner doesn't ever bother to check your comment? I left this a week ago http://my.opera.com/chooseopera/blog/2012/08/03/using-outlook-com-with-opera-2#comment94044392 and it's still awaiting approval.

SuntanaLab Saturday, August 11, 2012 12:52:05 PM

Exactly!

Last night after a couple more comments using my SuntanaLab User Name, I decided to just call it a night on MyOpera and go on to another Online Community to have fun over there since I was being hindered here.

There seem to be a temporal glitch in the spamificational fluxuator of the matrixical computational mechaniser unit causing the akismetrical input hypercapasitator to overflow its sanitising buffers. We're looking into it!

Robert Jacobsenrobertj Monday, August 13, 2012 11:59:51 AM

Alas, the spamificational fluxuator of the computational mechaniser unit wasn't easily fixed, but we have temporarily disabled it to ensure that the akismetrical input hypercapasitator doesn't overflow its sanitising buffers.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. Please do not hesitate to contact us if the issue is still present!

Suntana Monday, August 13, 2012 12:38:05 PM

Ahhhhh! My vague hunch was right.
In the back of my mind, the thought did reside that the spamificational fluxuator of the matrixical computational mechaniser or the akismetrical input hypercapasitator COULD be the most likely culprits. As Spock would say ... It's logical. spock

Thanks for taking the time to pop in here and clarify things, Robert. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Happy.gif -

Recently I have also learnt a new English term for that: 'wafflying' bigsmile

They are wafflying with that spamificational fluxuator of the computational mechaniser it's my suppose.

Or... Am I wrong perchance? rolleyes whistle

Oh my goodness, Teresa!
How could you think the MyOpera Devs would just make up stuff like that? left right The MyOpera Devs are highly-trained geniuses. They don't need to make up stuff like that. Those devices really do exist. They just happen to be sooo new and revolutionary Super High Tech that they are exclusive to MyOpera. That's why you won't find them on Wikipedia or elsewhere.

If Robert says they're going to fix the spamificational fluxuator of the matrixical computational mechaniser and the akismetrical input hypercapasitator, then you can bet all the giraffes in the world that they WILL fix'em. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Yes.gif -

Certainly yes, Charlie... If you say that Robert said they're gonna fix that... I'll buy it. But, sorry, let the giraffes alone...

But, excuse me dear.. If according you 'The MyOpera Devs are highly-trained geniuses' why this issue looks like it remains the same along the time? bigeyes

Ah well, let's go to see it tonite! o

Suntana Monday, August 13, 2012 9:24:07 PM

http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/LOL2.gif - Okay Okay, Teresa, I'm just joking. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/LOL.gif - Those devices really don't exist. I'm just pulling your leg. Nomás bromeando.

Robert was just using some humor to say that they're working on fixing the problem. http://files.myopera.com/Tamil/Smilies/Happy.gif -

PS:
Have you noticed none comment over here have been marked as a spam? bigeyes

"all you have to do if your comment is marked as spam is to wait until the blog or album owner sees the comment and marks it as not spam."
I'm running into similar problems at Care 2. However trivial such problems may seem, they effectively curtail conversation. And if aki-metrical implies like and trust ( cf Akismet ) Not so much.

Schnellinger Friday, October 5, 2012 9:32:41 PM

I actually have the same problem since 2 days. All I comments post here http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2012/10/04/the-snapshot-cycle-continues were marked as spam. And there was no URL, no tags, no code or whatever. Just plain text.
And I guess this comment now will be also marked first....EDIT: Obviously not ;-)

up Not sure why I never received a notification for this post and the one after it, even tho I am subscribed

I have seen less spam

Mimis Mum (MM)mimi_s_mum Wednesday, October 31, 2012 6:31:09 PM

Just found out neither album owner or group moderators can "Not Mark as Spam" when a comment posted to one of the photo album photos was Marked as Spam.

Please take a look at this bug, Andreas & the team. smile

I have now reported this also here: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1558922

We have now tested this at Shoot & Tell and it turned out none of the group members, moderators or a group founder can mark the comments as not spam, or do anything for them.

QuHno Sunday, November 11, 2012 6:57:36 PM

It is the 4th time now I personally have been hit by the spam filter although none of my comments was spam and all of the comments were on-topic.

Once I deleted the comment and wrote an new one, just changing the line break and it was no longer recognized as spam. The second time I tried to edit the comment because I thought I might have found out what triggered it, but nada.

The system is now online since several months and it seems to become worse instead of better.

Solutions:

Please add an option for registered users to contact someone who feels responsible to get the comments unflagged as quickly as possible or disable the spam filter. I don't care what, as long as you do something.

It is disgusting as it is now.
