Learning how to build a homemade wind turbine became necessary to our family when we first started looking to buy a wind turbine to run our off gird home. The cost of 1000w models wanted to run our clean energy system cost virtually $4000 including the tower. We had to even assemble it ourselves. We figured there must be an easier way.

Our solar panel array just wasn't sufficiently big to run our home and we figured a large wind turbine would add to our power supply enough to meet the increased demand of 3 kids being raised in a mostly normal home.

We decided to look at the option of building our own, as we said when we saw the price of new ones. The problem was that no straightforward plans existed to just do that. All the turbine plans we encountered requested complex layout and far more welding than we cared to follow. What we needed was an easy set of plans.

None existed so we made a decision to make our own.

Our homemade wind turbine project took us over 10 years to finish. Trying to find a source of inexpensive parts that we could put along with relatively easy tools was extremely difficult. Everyone seems to always want to complicate things in order to keep their share of a very large business sector. The clean energy field has grown significantly over the last one or two years and most manufacturers simply didn't want anyone building their own wind generator. I guess we can understand that.

However not everybody can afford $4000 for the system we required. We all know we couldn't. So we went to work to design a system that could be employed by anyone. We even learned the best way to habitually supply a wind turbine blade design that met the simple tool- simple to learn standards.
