Võ Bình Định originates from the Bình Định province, one of two provinces that formerly constituted the province of Nghia Binh.
It is practiced for good health, sound mind and sound body and for self defense.[1] Võ Bình Định's sprit also comes from the people's strong community-consciousness, will of freedom and from several decades of fighting foreign invaders and tyrants.
Also referred to as the traditional martial arts of Vietnam, it is known for its various elbow and staff techniques.
There is no single founder of Võ Bình Định.
[edit] History
There is no distinct date of when the style might have officially been founded. Many of its practitioners credit the leadership of Nguyễn Huệ and his two brothers Nguyen Nhac and Nguyen Lu. Under Nguyen Hue's leadership, warriors practicing Bình Định took part in what is now known as the Tay Son Uprising [2]. It began 1771 [3] and led to the Tây Sơn Dynasty, which ended 1802. Nguyen Hue was king and defeated the Chinese Qing invaders in the North in an epic battle which is still celebrated in the country today.
The military training then was called Võ Tay Son. It was well known for its aggressive swordsmanship. [4] But Võ Tây Sơn and Võ Bình Định also encouraged women to learn it [5] due to its basis of the principle of between hard and soft. Its effectiveness does depend on muscular strength like wrestling or Hung Ga Kung Fu. It places a high amount of attention on the efficiency of its movements.
Related styles which rose at the same time in the same region are
* Hung Ke Quyen ("Bravery Cock fighting Style"), created by Nguyen Lu, one of the leaders of the Tay Son Uprising
* Nhan Da or Kieu Dung which are similar to the Japanese Ninjutsu
Hung Ke Quyen features aggressive high kicks to the head and two-leg jumping kicks.[6] The fighter moves very quick.
