wordpress spam killing your akismet ? try WP_HashCash

I moved my Rosacea Support Group blog from a self-hosted blogger site to a wordpress self-hosted site.

One of the reasons I wanted to do this was to improve the ability of my readers to easily leave comments. The comment system from blogger is awful. Hold that, it is worse than awful.

So I did the move, and turned on Akismet to stop spam getting to the comment areas. I wanted people to see their comment straight away, no approval and no effort from me.

Well Akismet tells you that it is blocking lots, and when you look at what it holds - it is stinking spam. Alas it holds way too many comments as possible spam. It forces you to wade through the `flagged as possible spam' in order to see recent comments.

So I found I was spending ages and ages trying to weed out the spam the akismet wasn't sure about. I didn't find a single false positive. Why couldn't it just delete all tha crapola for me ?

Enter WP_HashCash. It is a plugin that puts some Javascript on each page. When someone tries to submit a comment, it forces a calculation to run. If the result of the calculation suggests that the isn't running a browser that supports javascript, it bounces them to `nick-off' page.

Here is an example of what it looks like ;

wp_hashcash

So far nothing has gotten through WP_HashCash that shouldn't have. I don't get a lot of comments, and as far as I can tell it isn't blocking good comments either.

You don't have to install the WP_HashCash widget - that is only if you want to see some stats.

Do others see WP_HashCash as reliable as well ?
