WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — There are two types of people in the world: the ones on MySpace.com and everyone else.
If the two groups were warring, the momentum would be with the MySpacers. The Los Angeles-based social-networking site claims more than 37 million members, a number that publicists say is growing by as much as 100 additions per minute. The site already pulls in more daily page views than Internet goliaths such as Google, Amazon and ESPN, according to the comScore Media Metrix's September data.
For the uninitiated, the site is something like a nightclub that's open 24/7. Imagine a place where all of your friends hang out and where the patrons wear shirts that list their age, their dating status, their hobbies, their favorite movies, their salary range and their heroes. They also carry around photo albums for you to thumb through, lists of their friends (complete with pictures) and maybe even a few of their journal entries.
To use the site, users create a free profile that can include photographs, blogs and comment boards. Friends can then link their profiles together. It's the embodiment of the six degrees of separation theory: Users can check out their friend's friends and their friends' friends, and so on. MySpacers also can search the site's database to find people in their vicinity or users who have similar interests.
