Short meeting before the start
So few days later, far far away in Finland, about 1:10 after midnight I started out to pick up all controls on my 14 km long course. The last words of Kari Enckell still sounded in my head: find the first control as the most important in your life!
My map with routes here (1,4 MB)
I was so happy, when I took over my map from Jens Molin and saw the 1st control very close big road. I remember that some of our excellent night runners said that they would take a lamp even if the night will be very light, because they like feeling of night orienteering, but my feelings are opposite I am not so good night orienteer.
When I reached my first control and spotted correct number I was very happy. Unimportant step for humankind but huge step for man - me And I decided to continue with this very safe orienteering also for next several controls. But... you can see very interesting mistake on the 2nd spot...
With better light conditions I started to run better and better, one more stupid mistake came on the control number 170, when I found a small depresion 93, but set my position incorrectly. There I met Jonas Pilblad, his presence and very good speed helped me a lot, so the 2nd part of the race I passed with good feeling and especially last 2 difficult controls 49 and 161 delighted me a lot, when I reached very good splittimes.
Unfortunately team SNO 2 were loosing few minutes on each leg, so we finished 42th. Team 1 was in the lead of Jukola very long time, but increasing pressure compelled us to do mistakes, anchor man Michal Smola came to the finish on the 5th place.
This year´s Jukola has brough also many exciting stories and everything was possible to watch online (with TV cover as well). For example the misspunching of OK Linné on the second last control on the second last leg and then perfect run of Annika Billstam for victory, which can never come true
Or fatal mistakes of top runners, which we can very easily to follow by GPS in real time, do the race more exciting.
Few pictures from Jukola, the race with many positive attributes!
