Long darkness at Jukola

My bad experiences from the long night at Tiomila were still quite fresh when I got mission to run 3rd night leg at Jukola. but I was persuaded to do it, because in Finland in the middle of june, there will not be real night.

Short meeting before the start
So few days later, far far away in Finland, about 1:10 after midnight I started out to pick up all controls on my 14 km long course. The last words of Kari Enckell still sounded in my head: find the first control as the most important in your life!
My map with routes here (1,4 MB)
I was so happy, when I took over my map from Jens Molin and saw the 1st control very close big road. I remember that some of our excellent night runners said that they would take a lamp even if the night will be very light, because they like feeling of night orienteering, but my feelings are opposite wink I am not so good night orienteer.
When I reached my first control and spotted correct number I was very happy. Unimportant step for humankind but huge step for man - me bigsmile And I decided to continue with this very safe orienteering also for next several controls. But... you can see very interesting mistake on the 2nd spot... rolleyes
With better light conditions I started to run better and better, one more stupid mistake came on the control number 170, when I found a small depresion 93, but set my position incorrectly. There I met Jonas Pilblad, his presence and very good speed helped me a lot, so the 2nd part of the race I passed with good feeling and especially last 2 difficult controls 49 and 161 delighted me a lot, when I reached very good splittimes.

Unfortunately team SNO 2 were loosing few minutes on each leg, so we finished 42th. Team 1 was in the lead of Jukola very long time, but increasing pressure compelled us to do mistakes, anchor man Michal Smola came to the finish on the 5th place.

This year´s Jukola has brough also many exciting stories and everything was possible to watch online (with TV cover as well). For example the misspunching of OK Linné on the second last control on the second last leg and then perfect run of Annika Billstam for victory, which can never come true worried
Or fatal mistakes of top runners, which we can very easily to follow by GPS in real time, do the race more exciting.

Few pictures from Jukola, the race with many positive attributes!

There, where the sun doesn´t go down

,

In Sunday´s evening 12 members of SNO set out for a journey to Finland, to a small village Lapua - scene of this year´s Jukola. But before that in the morning we had a club championship, not very important race, but one historical moment has happened there. For first time in my life I have heard our coach Kari to say: this map was bad. Whoever know him, understand the importance wink

But now we are in Finland.
Åsa, Anders Tiltnes, Pål, Petr, Michal, Fabien, Isak, I, Torbjörn, John and Anders Skarholt

I was surprised that Jukola´s terrain is quite tough and demanding for running. But on the other side, the dark night shouldn´t come, so 2nd and 3rd leg runners, which will compete between 24-2:30, can expect only soft dark.

Futhermore, whoever would like to watch one video from our one-man relay training, can download it here (10MB).
Only one, but pretty unpleasant thing is mosquitos everywhere around knight

Nebudu to už natahovat. Položím jídlo na stůl, chystám si přečíst něco z tisku a v tom na mě hledí naši kluci z titulní stránky yikes SNO Tiomila tým
Tisk si nás všímá a to je dobře, jinak nebudou sponzoři...

Stockholm Sprint-Swim Cup

Yesterday I made use of an opportunity to train again sprint orienteering and took part in the 1st race of Stockholm City Cup. It is quite attractive series of sprint competition with more than 500 participants, start intervall is between 15-30 seconds. There are only 2 courses (man and women, divided to 6 categories - young, seniors and motion). And usually there is several strong orienteers on the start.

Organizers prepared interesting race but with few surprises for me. First was a map standard, which was more "forest" than "sprint", I mean they didnt use international specification for Sprint Orienteering Maps.

Another surprise after quite easy beginning was leg 11-12. I was a little shocked, when I didnt find any "dry" way to the control 12, but then suddenly I remembered PWT race 1996 from Prag, when in my age of 13 I watched amazing race with such stars as Rudolf Ropek or Jörgen Mårtensson (more here). In that time one control was on a small island and it was a perfect show for spectators to watch runners there yes But depth of the lake was only a little bit more than 0,5 meter.

Will it be same today?

No, it wasnt! Quite shock for me, when I jumped to the water and had to start to swim. In cold sea in May. Unfortunately for me (I started in the beginning) but luckily for other runners there was another better way from the left side, where man even couldn´t jump to the water, because between the land and island were big stones in the water. But how could I know it? (But of course according to IOF sprint rules it is forbiden to cross water with black boundary and have such control)

But it doesnt matter, it was "interesting" experience wink

Only pity that my routechoice wasn´t faster and I lost about 20 seconds. And after swimming my body was quite chilled so I didnt feel the best in second part of the race.mad
