How To For Forum Etiquette

The net has created many unique opportunities for social interaction. A particularly popular form of this interaction is the message board. This is a guide intended to help you survive and thrive on a message board and it assumes you have some experience with forums. If you have no clue what a forum is, find one on your favorite website and figure it out. First off, before posting on a message board, make sure you have an idea of the particular niches and peculiarities. Find out what people like and don’t like. Make sure you choose a name that will not annoy people. When you have a proper username, read around for a while before posting. Don’t immediately spam the board with all your thoughts and ideas. Find out who is the “big cheese” of the forum, and who are the difficult ones. Make note of who not to piss off. When you have “lurked” for a bit, start to post on a topic of your liking. Make the post pertinent not only to the topic but also to the flavor of the conversation before your post. Use understandable English but do not. do not use abbreviations (lol, fyi, etc.)! Continue this pattern for days or weeks and you will slowly sink in. Don’t assume to know anyone well unless you do and don’t act like you are above everyone. If a certain user is antagonizing you, just ignore it and don’t respond. If you start problems, people will most likely remember it while reading your posts. Just don’t|Do not start trouble and post timidly. You can be more assertive in time. Whatever you do, don’t fraternize with other noobies; you will simply be stuck with them if you do. After months of posting, you can start creating your own topics, or threads. Be cautious and use your best judgment. If people respond positively, good for you! You will have some points on the scoreboard. However if they respond not in your favor, you might just be up a creek. Don’t explain your actions or intentions. It will be seen as a sign of weakness. Also, keep track of how often you post. If the first five threads on a page have your name under the last posted section, you might be labeled a spammer. When you have become an accepted member, this is not such a problem. As you have the acceptance of other board members, you can start to relax and show more lenience. Do not stretch this too far however. Try to learn the inside jokes and if you are involved in one you may bring it up often. Do not bring up jokes that you had nothing to do with. That just makes you look immature. Remember, these are just guidelines. Becoming a true forumite requires quick wits and clever thinking. Keep this in mind and good luck!
