The first thing, before you even get started, is to read the laws in your area concerning home schooling. In America, each state governs the laws for home schooling, so the procedures and regulations will vary from state to state. Fortunately, the laws and regulations for schooling your kids at home have loosened up and now you can home school legally in virtually anywhere. Still, you want to make sure that you're fully compliant with the laws so you don't risk problems with authorities, which could mean your kids would be forced to return to public schools. As long as you make sure you study the requirements carefully, you shouldn't have any problem. If you make contact with other parents who home school, or search out a local group of home schooling parents, you will have a place to get your concerns answered and you will also have a great support group handy.

If you're going to teach your child at home, you have to consider not only the academic side of things but also discipline. Even though the home schooling structure is generally looser than a traditional classroom, there still must be some restrictions and rules. Some parents find that it's a challenge to get their children to see the home as a place that they have to treat as a classroom for at least part of the time. Depending on the personality of your child/children, this may or may not be a problem for you. Nowadays, it can be a challenge to pull kids away from their devices, whether television, MP3 players or phones, but these can't be allowed when you're teaching. Time management should be at the top of the list of skill sets you need to conquer if you plan to successfully home school your kids. It's true, you won't have outside activities like commutes to deal with, and you may think that time to do everything isn't a problem; however, in reality you may find getting everything done is a real challenge. Like most people who "work from home", you can easily be distracted by your other responsibilities. However, home schooling is a full-time job as well. What's the solution? Set a time schedule just like a regular school, and stick to it as closely as you can. Try to factor in anything that will need done and, as you think of other things, keep a list handy so they can be "scheduled" as well. The beginning and ending times for each day are important for everyone to know. You might also set the times for breaks and lunch so there is no doubt as to when a certain activity is scheduled. This is important even if the lunch break is only going to the refrigerator and getting out the milk and sandwiches.

Over the last few decades, home schooling has become much more widely accepted. You can now easily find out everything you need to know about home schooling, as so much has been written about it. Meeting other home schooling families and reading as much as you can about it helps prepare you for many of the issues you're likely to face. Home schooling allows you to control the type of education your child gets, which is perhaps the biggest advantage.
